Finally I'm starting to get decent at this game. After playing a total of about 3.5 weeks (1 in 2004, 2.5 now) I am finally at a point where I can say for sure that I have improved. Here's a rundown of my experiences online:

week 1 (2004)
I suck really bad, but learned a little bit by watching tracks.

week 2 (1 week ago)
I suck really bad, I play only on Skies of Fire and WarClouds.

day 1: I go on Skies of Fire, and have no idea externals are on (or what that means). I talk a bit to the people in the server about settings.

0 kills, 20-ish deaths.

day 2: My first online kill, I'm amazed at my self for shooting down a P-38 (which somebody else already put on fire rofl).

1 kill, 20-ish deaths.

day 3-7: I still don't understand this game but I'm starting to read guides. No kills at all. I now understand the difference between arcade-ish servers, and full real servers. I decide to play on WarClouds, where I get utterly destroyed. I'm watching several tracks and this kinda helps.

day 8-11: I start to play on WoE, I get trackIR 4, I start shooting stuff down! I only fly LW planes & do only B&Z because these forums made me think this is uber. My understanding of the game has greatly improved.

day 11: was a great day, I shot down 3, and only got shot down about 13 times in return. ( http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif )

day 12: was similar but better.

day 13-16: I only play on WingsOverEurope (under name basdirks), and I understand the game waaaay better than a few weeks ago. I actually play pretty decent.

day 13: I shoot down 8, get shot down 8 times in return: K/D rate of 1, I am amazed, and plan to get a K/D rate of 2 the next day >_>

8 victories, 8 defeats. (WoE)

day 14: My plan doesn't work out, because I am too greedy and too impatient. I play very idiotic actually. I get shot down about 12! times, and only take 5 down.

5 victories, 12 defeats. (WoE)

AND THEN YESTERDAY!!!

I decided to fly very patient, and it resulted in my first 2-victory sortie (and my second, and my third ;D). My understanding had greatly improved, and it showed. Best day so far. I still can't take off or land properly some times, but atleast I'm shooting stuff down. This game is so much more fun when you actually understand energy/turning/plane-vs-plane/deflection/shooting, not just in theory, but applied to the game.

9 victories, 4 defeats. (WoE)

I made this post to share my improvement, and also to give you a look into the world of the noob that you once self were.

Some of you guys take this way too seriously. But than again, I keep records of my fastest laps in GT Legends.

I don't actually keep "a war diary" or anything like it. I just remember it. + WoE has a cute stats page.

Very nice to read, I too am just starting out online, and am going through the same stuff.

Oh @ Jasko76: I play a lot of GT Legends. If you ever go online my name is JD there. I'll be the one sawing the wheel back and forth with the keyboard. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I remember my first weeks playing IL-2... I'd just gotten the game for my birthday and was amazed at how much this then-unknown sim looked, played, and feeled.

But mainly now I just skin, and on occasion (Like right now) build missions.

It's entertaining to hear how new (relatively speaking) pilots get excited and addicted to this sim after so many years.

Congrats dude. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Whatever, you still died so that`s 0 success to me.Also you should first focus on obtaining basic abilities that you don`t yet have. How good is a pilot that shoots 5 dudes down but crashes on takeoff/landing every one in a while.20 - 80 succesful landings/takeoffs in a row should be your aim now.Learn to land without gear keep working on emergency procedures, know all that is going on around you and you`ll have much less virtual lives wasted.

Anyone who doesn`t care about his virtual life and calls himself an avid flight simmer is a clown.

Much more in your way to learn is.

Well done Johhnie.

Have you made your chat bar bigger? Make sure you can see about 5or 6 lines of chat so you can see the server messages otherwise you miss vital info.

Definitely find out the setting on the server. If others are flying with no cockpit and you have it on then you are at a big disadvatage. If externals are on and you are not using the padlock keys then you are at a big disadvantage.

What are the settings on the server that you are on>?

Make sure you are playoing on a server which has the settigns as you like them, dont go on an easier server and play with harder settings, otherwise its like trying to play football against proper opposnents with your legs tied togther. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

ELSjonnie,

Nice post, welcome aboard. This game does get pretty addicting, especially when you can see you rskills improve. I fly mostly ofline myself, but do occsisonally venture online when wife, kids and work allow.(The joke at my house is that I can fly all I want to, just have to do it betwen between 12:30AM and 6:00AM.)

Anyway congrats, there is nothing like that first online kill.

Neal

Flying only on Wings over Europe, which is full real minus speedbar and icons.

Good tip about the chatbar.

16-11 today (yeh I played about 4 hours ;D), not as good as yesterday, but oh well, K/D of over 1. I had good fun killing a member of [DB] squad in a 1vs2 (me in spit vs 2 bf109's). Then some dude came and helped me with that last one. Great teamwork there.

Crashlanding is going better and better. Normal landing is still ****, I need to focus harder I guess ;]

Well, I save the tracks when I've made a kill...
But I have lost all three when my system crashed http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif
