View Full Version : A few random questions about the game

The longer I am playing this game, the more questions arise. At the moment I have the following questions:
1) When giving commands through the Tab key, I see some lines in red and some in yellow. At first I thought that the red ones are not valid, but that seems not to be correct. Some I can use and some not. What exactly do the colours mean ?
2) Doing a campaign and getting a mission for escorting bombers, sometimes in the briefing is said not to engage in dogfighting. That's not clear to me, because I assume that I have to attack the opponents. Or do I have a wrong understanding of the term "dogfighting" ?
3) Is it actually cheating when you take a look at the map, to see where enemy ac is ? I don't mean to see whether you are chased or not, because I think that IS cheating, but to see where possibly other planes are, after you have been in a fight and you see no other ones in your vicinity.

1st the 1 you didn't ask. "Will Steve V move this to GD" " Yes, as its not a tech question http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

No. 2. Its means stay with the bombers. If you spot a flight of Ju-87's escorted by 2 109's and peel off to attack them then your not going to be in place when the bombers you were with arrive in the target area and get jumped in turn by 4 more 109's.

No.3 Cheating ? no, its your game and you should play it the way you enjoy but it does take away a lot of the realism factor when you can just thumb on the map and go " Aha, over there. Real pilots had to constantly scan for both targets and to keep from being a target. It adds a whole new dimension to your game if you turn off those map icons.

1) the commands you can use depend on your rank and position
I thought that only yellow were accessable

2)what is implied is that you do not go on a free hunt but stay and protect bombers- if attacked then defend

3) MMMMMMM - this depends I always found having the planes enabled spoiled immersion as when I looked at map I could see position of bandits and so line up for favourable position so I switched this off.
however nothing is really cheating as the options are up to the individual to play as he seems fit.
If you think that you should have the oppertunity to engage further after your long oubound flight then keep them on as you will find them easier-if you want to be more realistic then switch them off and use situational awareness and eyesight to detect bandits. look for front lines and their bases on map and work out intercept cources from this.

just my opinions, hope it helps

1. Dark red (maroon) is unavailable. Red issues the command described. Yellow takes you to a sub menu with a list of more options.

1. What The Joystick Man said....

2. What the H@ll Hound said.....

3. It's only cheating if you are online and the map is turned off on the server but you and only you or your side find a way to acess it anyway.. Other wise it is just using a feature of the sim.

Some good questions rijnton. I've never been completely sure of the Tab key commands.

I'd like to give another opinion on map icons, elaborating further on good responses. I fly offline so its always against AI. Many times in the midst of combat with alot of a/c situational awareness, especially without Track IR, can become all but impossible. So I'll click on the map and if there's 20 enemy a/c, 6 may be on my tail. I think that's because they're programmed to focus more on me, and that's not realism. So under such circumstances I conveniently think of the map as a balancing act http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Yes, good point, but it's just that some people don't have things like TrackIR, or even a Hat Switch for me, so especially external is an easy way of seeing were the enemies are. I've got map icons on, but I don't use them to get an advantage, I just use it when I'm bored, en-route to the target.

"Cheating" is a relative term IMO. If online, always follow the hosts rules.
Offline ask yourself, "Did I gain an unfair advantage by doing that?" If the answer is "Yes" you cheated.
I've "cheated" in that manner and it hasn't done me any good. It still takes skill to shoot down the enemy, hit the ground target, fly the plane, especially when damaged. The number of times I've met the mission requirements only to crash land at home...... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

That's the beauty of this game. It has been set up to be played in a manner comfortable to you. Ultimately you make the decision.

And BTW, even after playing this sim exclusively for over two years there are still questions. That is one of the most intriguing aspects of the game IMO. In that respect it is much like "Real Life".
