Well, it's finally official. I fly out to Thailand on Wednesday, 24th September, only six months later than planned http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif.

The political situation has calmed down enough to go via Bangkok, rather than 'all around the houses' as I was thinking.

I'm going for at least four months, possibly six, see how it goes...

Plan to fit in side trips to China and Vietnam while there (due to barmy Thai visa regulations! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/disagree.gif)

I will keep you all in my thoughts and observe the forum from periscope depth whenever I can get down to an internet cafe.

I'll try to bring back some interesting knick-knacks as prizes for future competitions, luggage allowance permitting (all those shoes of hers! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif)

Very busy over the next few days with stuff but I'll try to dip a toe in here if I can.

Gonna miss you all very much. As they say in Thailand: 'Take care yo'selves!' http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Have fun http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Very clever, first you destabilize the political landscape and then you go over as knight in shiny armour to save Thailand.....as new PRIME MINISTER ! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/shady.gif

@Kielhauler1961;

Well, ....Good luck, and have fun!!

Just remember to keep saying; "I'm British ...I'm British!!"

I've been to Southeast Asia, and there still seem to be some there that do not think of "Americans" fondly! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

LOL

What a coincidence. I just played Crysis Warhead and there is a cutscene in which the player gets captured by the North Koreans.

The two guards speak Korean (of course) and although you cant understand a word it is pretty obvious that they are discussing to beat the snot out of the "Amehrikaahn"

Which results in the short but determined answer : "I am British you muppets !" http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-mad.gif

In Thailand the USA military built the whole infrastructure their economy was able to lauch itself from 30+ years ago. Thais love 'Americans'. In fact they love all 'westerners'. We are seen as giant walking ATM cards... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif In Cambodia the main unit of currency is the US dollar. Their own paper currency, the 'real', is so worthless it's used as small change in place of coins.

Various Russian mafias have been moving into Thai resort areas, causing friction with the local police and causing a drop in their corrupt profits.

Will let you know about Vietnam when/if I get there. I'm not all that keen on roast dog, although maybe The_Silent_O has a good recipie?

I have promised my girl that we will have a 'snowball fight' (she's never seen snow except on TV) and, to my utter disbelief, the mountains of northern Vietnam actually experience snowfall! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

I hope you enjoy your return to Thailand, KH http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

One of my best friends is married to a girl from north Thailand (they met in ****et a few years ago). They're currently living over here in the UK, so that he can earn some money to go back and finish building a house for their family. They can't wait to go back!

They try to do 6 roughly months here and then 6 months in Thailand. Sounds like a great place to settle down, once you get used to the heat, and the big spiders! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

For me, the fabulous food and low cost of living would outweigh the heat and local wild life. KH - Got any room in your suitcase for me? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Well, I had a little think, and pulled KH into my office. Disappear for six months!?

No no no. We cannot allow that to happen I told him.

So, when KH isn't busy trawling the shops looking for gifts for us all, he'll be sending RJ 'virtual postcards' when he can, which I shall then post on the forum. These will contain more of the excellent photo's he has already shared with us of the fascinating place that is Thailand. In return, I shall condense the community's recent forum highlights and send them to KH so he can get his community fix too and not feel left out http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Look out for a forthcoming thread probably titled (imaginatively!) 'Postcards from KH' http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Bon Voyage KH! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Well, it's less than 24 hours to go before departure, so I though I'd better confirm that:

1. My airline is still in business.
2. The 'excess' hasn't risen by more than 300%.
3. What aircraft they will be using.

I was, of course, expecting 'Presidential Class' in something like this...
http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk295/kielhauler/cap0291.jpg

I was informed that due to the global economic downturn, my plane looks more like this...
http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk295/kielhauler/Farman1.jpg

Somewhat doubtful, I asked if the pilot knew how to get to Bangkok?

The reply was "If you hum it, he'll play it."

Cripes!

Well, I'm just waiting for the taxi to take me to Heathrow. As I think it's appropriate, and I have nothing better to do but wait right now, I thought I would share one of my favourite Spike Milligan poems with you...

This is from memory so may have a few errors. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

From 'A Book of Milliganimals'

Silly Old Baboon

There was a Baboon
Who one afternoon
Said "I think I will fly to the Sun"

So with two great palms
Strapped to his arms
He started his take-off run...

Mile after mile
He galloped in style
But never once left the ground

'You're going too slow'
Said a passing crow
'Try reaching the speed of sound'

So he put on a spurt
By God how it hurt
The soles of his feet were on fire

There were great clouds of steam
As he rushed through a stream
But he still didn't get any higher

Racing on through the night
Both his knees caught alight
And smoke billowed out from his rear

Quick to his aid
Came the fire brigade
And they chased him for over a year

Many moons passed by
Did Baboon ever fly?
Did he ever get to the Sun?

Well I've been told today
That he's well on his way
He'll be passing through Acton at one!

Speak you all soon!

KH
