View Full Version : Silent hunter as maritime platform

I love Silent hunter, but believe it could be improved infinately by becoming a platform for maritime activity just as Microsoft Flight Simulator is a platform for aviation activity.

Does anyone know how feasible it would be to add player designed vessels and campaigns, just as the flightsim community enjoys additional aircraft and scenery from individuals?

Personally, I would like to see the addition of Royal Naval submarines of the S, T and U classes, along with suitable campaigns and submarine depot ships.

The addition of US and Japanese submarines would also be welcome, as would the ability to be able to take command of the current AI merchant vessels (with the addition of bridge and engine rooms of course).

Does anyone agree in principle?

Everybody agrees in principle, to this and a heap more, except UBI. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/cry.gif

AARRRRRRGGGhhhhhhhhhhhh! NEVER NEVER, ever, say that 'Microsoft Flight Simulator is a platform for aviation activity'. This Fl...t sim (uggh can't say the word) is for babies http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

The only Flight Sim for this title, is the IL2 - Sturmovik series.

They refuse to release SDK so the only way to go is by individual ingenuity.
Check <span class="ev_code_YELLOW"> this thread (http://www.subsim.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=43343)</span>where great mind geather to continiue where Ubi failed to produce.

Mind you need to log in!

Sure,

Maybe the author of the thread made a bad analogy - but the point is well made, SHIII could be expanded on in a number of different ways.

Here's to hoping that it may happen.

It is a flight sim though. IL2 Sturmovik is combat flight simulator. Some people don't want a combat flight simulator but a regular flight sim.

P_E - Yes I know. MSFS is more popular as it's easier to 'fly'.

BUUTTTTT...

If you really looking for better Flight Models, you all know where to go... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Oh, as far as Combat/Flight sims go, You're can also just fly around in IL2 with no action if you want to. You'll just have to build your own Nav charts.

Aha I've seen this, and it looks unreal! I only wish that MSFS employ Oleg for the flight modelling. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

This (http://forum.aerosoft-shop.com/viewtopic.php?t=6167) is another intersting one as well.

Oh how delicious! I love MSFS! I can't imagine my system would be able to run that giant though!

Without the games SDK (source code) avaliable, an SH3 modder has very limited powers in what he or she can produce.

The trouble is SH3 is too incomplete anyway to become a maritime platform (like MS flight simulator) Huge areas of AI code are broken, incomplete or missing altogether, for instance

There is NO Ai code for submarines
This means: No freindly Uboats, no wolfpacks, no mikcows, no hostile submarines.

There is NO AI code for torpeedo attacks
Aircraft, Pt boats, destroyers and the non- extistant AI submarines cannot fire torpeedos.

ship AI has poor path finding
Destroyers cant recognise and aviod land mass and therfore always run aground near costal areas. merchents have no evasive manovers when under attack other than - zig zagging, convoys pile up horribly when they reach a waypoint.

Aircraft AI is extremely basic!
Planes in Sh3 need ALOT of work!! Aicraft in SH3 often collide, cannot track targets properly, miss there targets by miles, cannot conduct strafing, rocket or torpeedo attacks, they have poor physics (bombers are as agile as fighters) the list goes on......

All the above must be fixed before, what you propose can become anything more than a daydream. Now, fixing all that is a full time job for serveral months! Even with the SDK at our disposal it would take several very talented programers and artists with a lot of time and dedication.
The only thing that matches what i just described above is a 'dev team', not a 'modder'.

its not the SH3 modders fault he has No tools and shoddy foundations to work with, that why you dont many new units for download.

Sh3 as a game is still 24 carret gold, but its certainly not solid gold.

jea...

and in addition to this you should read the SimHQ discussion linked on the SH3 site in the news section:

http://www.simhq.com/_all/all_006a.html

when you hear some of these people talk you can get the idea why SIM games are the way they are and not how they should be...

... its all about money http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif

pity

Contrary to popular perception, money makes the world go flat (broke?).
