Hi all,

Work on the new version going steadily. As promised after finishing the new Royal Navy Seafire lettering options and the new SAAF and North Korean markings options I have turned my attentions towards the Royal Navy Corsair lettering and serial numbering options. As I feared these have turned out to be a right royal pain in the backside. These have taken quite a while to get right, well as best as I can working within the normal placement of markings limitations. I have settled on two options as per the Seafires both working with skins included in the game. One for E.T.O and one for Pacific. What you see here is the best fit solution. I still have many many MATs to edit for these but the positioning nightmare is done so it's a case of cracking on and doing these. When they are finished I still have some new code to work with but shouldn't be too much longer before I'm ready to beat test.

As per the Seafire lettering they will be randomised and non-randomised options for both the E.T.O and Pacific options and non-sequential individual aircraft serial numbering.

Hi guys,

Thanks for your comments.

Here's a screenshot of the RN Corsairs. All models except the Corsair MkIV have pretty good lettering positions. The MkIV shares MATs with the F4U models so I have chosen for good positioning on the F4Us and awful (non-existant)positioning on the MkIV as there are 3 models of F4U and only one model MkIV. So all Corsair except the MkIV are okay. I'll be working on the Pacific lettering MATs, all the different serial numbering TGAs and then all the non-randomised MAT versions over the next few days. In the meantime here's a shot of the RN E.T.O F4Us.

http://www.leigh-kemp.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/MM_2_20_WiP_RN_Corsairs_ETO_on_deck_randomised_let tering.jpg

The skins used are both supplied with PF. I'm not at home now but from memory the Pacific skin is one supplied as an F4U skin and the E.T.O skin is one supplied as a Corsair option. I copied each of these into all F4U and Corsair skin folders so as to have the option to display either set of lettering on any of these models. I'll dig out the skin filenames and include these as well as other "prefered" skins for the new RN and SAAF markings options in the program documentation. So far I have optimised the lettering position for display on two Seafire skins available at flying-legends.net, two of Extreme_One's Spitfire skins with matching SAAF fin flashes and the two RN F4U/Corsair skins. I'm looking for a home for the two SAAF Spitfire skins. When selecting the new RN lettering options, use the IL2-MAT Manager option to disable display of the game's RN roundels as the skins have the roundels on them. I'll probably post a companion screenshot of the Pacific markings Corsairs on the carrier deck as soon as I have completed all the required MATs and the full range of serial numbering TGA files.

What do you mean?

Hi mate,

I meant that Simon (Extreme_One) kindly did two Spitfire skins with SAAF fin flashes to match my new SAAF roundel options. I cannot host these for download as I haven't the web space. I cannot include skins in the IL2-MAT Manager download as it would make it bigger and also I haven't the web space for a much larger program/files download. I need a host for these skins that I can recommend people go to, normally of course that would be IL-2 Skins.

Aces

Sorry mate, just saw your flyinglegends.net thingy in your banner. If you are connected with them do you think it might be possible to have a download section for IL2-MAT Manager "prefered" skins that I could point folks to. I could upload the SAAF skins, the two Seafire skins are already on flyinglegends.net

Hi Aces!
Love your utility!!! It really makes the already cool flightsim even cooler!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

It would be great if there was a place for the prefered skins for your util... I had to dig in the comments on the Flying Legends site to find the ones you gave a nod to!

Love the Seafire lettering... can't wait for the Corsair!!

Also, not sure if you saw the FOF Quiz I put together with Axis/Allied Bf-109 insignias, but wanted to make sure I gave you all the props because your Mat Manager with User Defined options was the template I used! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

again, thanks and kudos for ALL the hard work!!!

Hi CraigNT,

thanks for you comments mate, I'm trying to organise a place for the skins as, with the Royal Navy Seafires and Corsairs it's better to get the proper RN roundels on the skins and let MAT Manager added the lettering and serial numbers. I'm working on this aspect to things. No I misssed your FOF quiz thing, please post details as I'd be very interested in having a look mate.

Cheers

Now for a general news uppdate.....

Hi chaps,

As promised a Pacific on-deck screenshot of Royal Navy F4Us to keep the ETO one company. Nearly finished the Corsairs and hope to have v2.20 finished and available in about one weeks time on the 29th just after Easter.

BTW, you can't see it well in the screenshot but all the aircraft have different non-sequential serial numbers just like my earlier RN Seafire options also to be included in v2.20.

If you'd like to see all the new stuff for v2.20 please have a look at my current news and information page on my website.

Aces' Artwork - News and Information Page (http://www.leigh-kemp.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/information.htm)

There are still two or three additional un-anounced new features for v2.20 which will improve program operation and add some new functionality and I'll post information on them on program release. I've got a busy week coming up http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Hi CraigNT,

Excellent mate, had a look at the quiz, good fun. It's really nice to see someone using the user-defined markings option and making their own markings, I don't know how popular this option is.

I really like your late Romanian and Bulgarian markings, they look splendid. Would you mind if I included them as additional markings options in v2.20 with credit given for your work of course ?. If so please can you send me the TGA files ASAP. I'll add a little light weathering and include them as additional Romanian and Bulgarian options.

Cheers and best regards

Hi Aces, I think I may have asked this before but - IJAAF tail markings. Is this possible? Either as a user made addition or otherwise. It'd be nice to dress al the Ki's up a bit http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Aces... is v2.20 going to be a full-blown install or an update? Whatever it is, it'll be great. ~S!~

Hi chaps,

Feathered_IV, I'm looking into this, it probably won't make v2.20 but if there's anything that can be done for the next version then I will do so.

Hi GT182, there will be two installers, a full v2.20 files and program installer, "the full monty" http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif plus a much smaller upgrade from v2.10/v2.11 to v2.20 which will include the new program and any MAT and TGA files added since the previous version. I just hope that I don't get too many support messages and posts from folks that download the upgrade thinking they've got the full version despite my warnings to the contrary http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Hi Aces!

Just made some .TGA files for MAT-MANAGER and was wondering where they go?

I looked at your site but doesnt tell you where to savw

Aces_High_2

Hi SeaNorris,

It depends what the TGAs are. If they are custom national markings eg. a graphic to replace one of the red stars or one of the balenkreuzes then there is a folder in the Regiments folder called "User Defined Markings" it is in this folder that the TGA(s) should go. There's a sub-folder of this folder called "Default" this contains fall-back graphics with the correct filenames which are loaded if there isn't a TGA of the correct name in the main "User Defined Markings" folder.

In other words let's say I do a new TGA that I want to appear wherever the USAAF "Whitestar" graphic would normally appear. I make my TGA and name it "User_USA.tga". When I select the "User Defined" option in IL2-MAT Manager for USA national markings. This is the graphic that will be displayed. The filename MUST be as per the example filenames given in the \User Defined Marking\Default folder. The program first looks in the "User Defined Markings" folder for an appropriately named TGA file, if it's not there it loads the one from the "Default" folder as a failsafe.

In this way you can create various user defined national markings graphics, in the example of the hakenkreuzes and balkenkreuzes there are four of each giving a total of eight TGAs which will be displayed in various combinations depending on the aircraft type. In the Default folder you will find the sample (failsafe) TGAs named:

User_Balkenkreuze1.tga - User_Balkenkreuze4.tga
User_Hakenkreuze1.tga - User_Hakenkreuze4.tga

You would need to create 8 different TGAs named as above and put these into the main "User Defined Markings folder" Then select User Defined as an option for both the drop down-boxes one for hakenkreuzes and one for balkenkreuzes and bingo you'll see your graphics in-game.

The above is described in the program documentation.

I'm including in V2.20 a similar feature but to enable the user to use a user-defined emblem in place of Jagdgeshwader, Kampfgeshwader, Stukageschwader, Zerstoerergeshwader, VVS, USSAF and Hungarian units.

Regards

Aces

PS. Please remember that the TGAs must be saved as 24 bit, un-compressed, 128x128 pixel files with alpha-channel containing the area to be displayed eg. all non-transparent areas of the artwork.

Hi all,

I apologise in advance if I'm slow in responding to your communications by e-mail and postings over the next week or so. I've so much work to complete for the new program version that I'll have to confine my web site activities to publishing brief updates and progress information relating to the new version which I hope will be available for download just after the coming Easter holiday weekend, on Tuesday the 29th of March. I will attempt to catch up and reply to any correspondence after the new program version has been released. Think of it as Aces will be out of line-of-sight on the dark side of the moon for a short while .

I'll have so more news to publish on my website this evening regarding the availability of a skin pack containing four skins that I highly recommend that you consider dowloading for use with the new program version.

As I'll be working on completing all aspects of the new program version throughout the remainder of the week and over the Easter holidays I'm much looking forward to taking a bit of a rest for a few weeks when the program is released whilst I recover my energies and consider features for a future version.

Best Regards

Made soem Swastikas and put them where you said. selected them 'USER DEFINED' But they dont show.

Aces_High_2
03-23-2005, 09:55 AM
did you give them the right filenames as per my earlier post ?, also did you make sure that the area of the graphic was saved to the alpha-channel ?. If you use PSP 8 then there's a problem with saving alpha channel, use save as to overwrite them an not save.

There's also something else you can try out. Copy one more of the haken.1.tga - haken4.tga files from your Regiments folder. Rename them as per my earlier message. Put them into your \Regiments\User Defined Markings folder. Fire up MAT Manager, make one change to the settings other that the hakenkreuze settings (leave them on user-defined) to force filecopy and quit the program. If you see the markings then it's a TGA file rather than a program issue. Also make sure that you are not saving as compressed TGAs or at a different size to 128x128 pixel. Most likely an alpha-channel issue, no alpha-channel = no display of TGA.
