By 'best fighter' do you mean 'biggest gun?'

Then Yak-9K wins.

There isn't a 'best fighter'

there is a best fighter for each player, but its all on an individual basis.

That depends.. Early war server, axis side, I take an 109F if they are available, for the VVS side, I-16. some ppl take the I-153 but, it can't fly that fast so, enemy aircraft always fly away from you when they want. In mid-war servers, you should take some 190, the latest variant available. For VVS, take a La5 version.

In late war, take a 109K4 or G10/G14, if you are good at aiming. If you are not, take the FW190A9. For the VVS, take the La7 or, the Yak3. If your aiming is good, take a big-cannon Yak9

so, have I been of any help? /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

P-47 is the best plane in the game if flown right. It can do everything pretty good to excellent. What more can you ask for?

At the start of WW2 the German army lacked experienced anti-aircraft gunners. The average gunner was so bad that the USSR decided to help them out. They did it by forcing some of their pilots to fly I-153 flak magnets. These planes were slow but very sturdy. This allowed German anti-aircraft gunners to get a large amount of target practice on a relatively small number of planes. Thanks to the Soviets help, by the end of the war the German anti-aircraft gunners were amoung the best in the world.</center>

No it does'nt sound cool. It sounds like you have watched too much tv. This is a very contradicting term in proper radio terminology.

You should only use the term "over" when you want a response from someone. For example: "Viper, This is Coastie, Do you copy?, Over."

You only use the term "out" when you are done talking and do not require a response, For example: "Coastie, This is Viper, I read you loud and clear, Out"

Over and out is a commonly mis-used term in the public and on cheesy tv shows. But, Now you know otherwise.

Coastie Out!

Since performance usually manifests in terms of speed, in that sense it's undoubably the Bf109K-4, with it's superbly overmodelled speed of average 630km/h on deck.

If you can't win, then just run away screaming. At least this works almost all the time.

ps) P-47 with full flaps out, is amazingly stall resistant. Almost feels like fighting the old IL-2 190s.

The Bf110 was a 2 engine bomber destroyer. It was then, and will be soon, easy meat for a single engine fighter. but in capable hands it will be a good aeroplane, just not a great one.

Try a flight in the QMB against the Bf-110G-2. If it points its nose at you, you die. It is very good at pointing its nose.

Hmm best plane... that's the plane which are best in most things, right?

I think... that fastest yak, or the La-7... Don't know which one turns better... Before you cry: Oi! But P47/109's/190 are good if flown right, then, yes, you're right... BUT Yak's and La-7's are more versatile. They're nearly/just as fast as the LW birds, pack a punch, and turn very well. Whereas, in the LW birds you are restricted to B&Z, in the La-7/Yak you can do both. If you want to be safe, just B&Z and you'll be invincible, if not, well, just fly into a furball and outmanouvre everyone there. Maybe the reason why I don't usually fly them... I love underdogs ^_^

La-7 and Yak 3 are Versatile?/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif Never heard that before. Let's see you kill a tank or bring down a heavy bomber and live to tell about it in a Yak 3 or La-7. The Yak 3 has one and only one advantage over axis fighters, it is agile. But the Yak 3's superb agility means nothing if you are dead before you realize you're being attacked. And it also doesn't do you a damn bit of good if the enemy refuses to turn. The La-7 is a good air superiority fighter, but it is a dedicated dog fighter. It is incapable of any significant ground attack or bomber interception.

But Yak is almost as fast (mostly faster) then German planes at low alt (at least that's what it says in the object viewer) At least it's as fast as the Dora (both 700 I thought...)

That is an AI. If it is like that with human pilots then it is clearly modeled wrong. The 110 fell in large numbers to the Allies. This is historical fact. If it is not like that in this sim, than it will join the ranks of the other overmodeled LW aircraft...I.E. E series climb rate, K4 sea level speed...

The Fw 190D9 late currently has a top speed of 634km/h TAS at sea level. The Yak 3 has a top speed of 590km/h TAS at sea level. And just so you will know, the Yak 3's speed will drop to about 575km/h in the patch, the D9 late will only drop to about 610km/h. The Yak 3 is no match for the Fw 190D9 late now or in the upcoming patch. And BTW, a little birdy tells me the Fw 190's will no longer suffer "cement stick" at speeds in excess of 500km/h/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif .

There is no "best plane ".
Different aircraft for different types of engagement .
The late model aircraft tend to be faster .(duh)
Planes got faster and gained more armament as the war progressed .
Do want a BnZ or a TnB ??
Do want to be able to take lots of damage ?
Do you want to carry ordinance ?
Do you good visability ?
LOTS of factors determine the answer to your question .
Obviously the pilot is the most important factor overall .
This game has a slight slant towards the VVS planes /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif . So for a quick answer to your question , any late-war Russian plane will do .
Funny.
I always prefer Luftwaffe planes over VVS planes .
ANY plane can be the BEST plane in the hands of a capable pilot !!

The Bf110 didnt quite make it as a day fighter but was Ok as a night fighter.

Have a look at early war p38's for what the Bf110 was meant to be but wasn't.

Spoken like a man with sense.......
That is a part of the beauty of this sim. In other sims I have flown no matter how passionately you felt about a plane many of them were just terrible.... Thats why in CFS1 you found most guys flying Hurris or Ponys... but here...You like the P-39? Then you learn to fly it and you get kills...You like the 190? Learn to fly it...not only that but there are several variations of most planes to fly not just one. In this sim the best plane depends on the pilot and his patience and skill AND the type of planes he is flying against... and the variations of THAT equation are very varied.....
IMHO the best plane in FB is the one you can fly the most and keep your virtual butt in tact.

Of course, that late night date with the TA-152 might be very interesting...

Crazy as it seems, for me it's either the '41 LaGG or the MiG w/Shvaks, in both IL-2 and IL-2:FB.

The reason is simple - I learned to fly both planes well, and got proficient with both of them.

A "mediocre" plane that you understand completely is far more deadly than an "uber" plane that is a stranger to you.

Tell you what - when the P-51 comes out dive on down to below 3,000 meters and I'll meet you with my humble LaGG. As long as I can force you out of the vertical I've got better than an even chance of besting you!

I'm not lieing, those ponies won't be difficult targets for me and most other veteran axis pilots. They are slower and less manueverable than the La-7, and I have no problem dispatching those in the Fw 190A's/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif . The P-51 will be a decent plane, and I will probebly fly it some. But it won't be a super plane that will make up for incompetence. It won't be newbie friendly, it will have mediocre performance and it won't be very rugged. It will be superior to the P-39Q10, but that isn't saying much. It will have great visibility, good firepower and good high speed handling. When I fly it, I will fly it around those advantages. And I will probebly butcher the Fw 190A's. It mostly comes down to the ability to fly your plane to its advantages and minimize its disadvantages. So the simple answer is the Fw 190A's are best because there isn't anything they arn't great at. But the real answer is whatever the guy who repeatedly kills you or bombs the sh*t out of your base is flying. Regardless of what plane type that is. Even if you fly the same plane, his is better/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif .

The Me 262 is a better fighteer than the P-51. Until Gibb's P-80 comes out the 262 will be the best...

True, the agility also leaves something to be desired. But that isn't what I meant. I meant there isn't any task a fighter might be given that the Fw 190A's can't do very well. The Fw 190A's are good interceptors, good bomber escorts, good at fighter-sweeps, good at combat air patrols and good mudmovers. It even does a decent job at antishipping. The Yak 3 and La-7's are good at fighter-sweeps and combat air patrols but not very good in other area's. When Someone asks "what is the best fighter", that means what is the best overall fighter. Which in FB is either the Fw 190A or P-47D. I give the Fw 190A first place because it is faster. But the P-47D-27 does have the advantage of better looks/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif . Once Gibbage gets the P-38 in, then it will probebly make my list of best overall fighters in FB. The Me 262 is not on my list of best overall fighters. Something about its small bombload and tendancy to burst into flames makes me a bit hesitant to name it as one of the best.

Best dogfighter as in best turnfighter or best plane for killing fighters? If turnfighter then I say I-153. If you mean best at killing fighters, then that is certainly the Tb-3/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif . No joke, I get atleast 3 kills everytime I fly it. Hurrah for the AI snipers/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif . If you mean best fighter for killing other fighters, then my vote goes to the Fw 190D9 Late. Plenty of firepower, great speed, lots of armour and very agile at 400-450km/h.

with no beer, all planes are equally bad
