WWII film made in 1976 about the career of US ace Pappy Boyington in the Pacific. Plenty of P40 and Corsair action hopefully !

Yeah I thought the dogfights were dodgy too, you could tell they were just following each other with no real aggresion in mind and the special effects were naff too, intercut with real footage - still, I guess it was made in 1976 so we cannot expect much. I thought they overdid the 'misfit' character somewhat with Boyington. I understand this was a pilot film to a series which probably explains the corny dialogue

There was indeed a series made from this pilot and it was almost totally fictional. Even Boyington wasn't overly enthusiastic about how they were portrayed but that didn't stop him from making cameo appearances in a few episodes. When I spoke to him about it in 1977 he just laughed and said "It got my book back in print so who am I to argue?"
Boyington also wrote a fictional novel called "Tania" I've seen a few copies around on various online auction sites.
