For German aircraft, I like "German Aircraft of the Second World War" by Antony L. Kay & J.R. Smith. William Green's "Warplanes of the Third Reich" is generally good, though there are a few mistakes in it, for which it has been drubbed in the forum from time to time.

For Russian aircraft, there's "Soviet Combat Aircraft of the Second World War" Vols. I & II, by Yefim Gordon and Dmitri Khazanov.

For American fighters, the best I've found is "America's Hundred-Thousand" by Francis H. Dean.

I'm embarrassed to say that I don't have a recommendation for a single title overview of all the aircraft in the game, but hopefully some of these have some of what you're looking for. Some of the above titles can be a little hard to find and/or pricey, too.

Before you spend a dime I recomend that you hit the Essential Reading section of the Sturmovik Essentials thread in my sig.

There is no perfect book. All books have limitations and flaws. Your best bet is to go to your local library and take out some general reference book on WW2 aviation. If you find it compelling an interesting read more. Then start buying.

I tend to rate books lately with a "nugget value." If I find a few "nuggets of info" in them that I did not know, then I am pleased.

As an aside, if anyone is interested in Wellington bombers, and the role of the radio operator/navigator then - In for a Penny is Excellent.

Here is a place with real references---their service is excellent, too.

This is a Great Book (http://www.amazon.com/Great-Book-World-War-Airplanes/dp/0517160242/sr=1-1/qid=1169527134/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-2426623-3413408?ie=UTF8&s=books)

It is huge. Not real good in info but the color centerfolds are really cool.

The aforementioned books are very good in their subjects. I have myself the "German Aircraft of the Second World War", and it is a great book.

For Japanese aircraft there's only one, truly great book... (I don't have it... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/sadeyes.gif), the one and only Japanese Aircraft of the Pacific War (http://www.amazon.com/Japanese-Aircraft-Pacific-Rene-Francillon/dp/087021313X/sr=1-1/qid=1169530412/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-5874977-6887314?ie=UTF8&s=books) http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif
