A small (nitpicking) correction.
It's not Oleg's sim.

It's the IL2 engine handed over to a third party. Ilya said in the banana lounge that 1C Maddox did no dev work on this game. I think he said that the dev team that did work on it was bigger than 1c maddox. Explains why BOB is taking its time.

Not in the slightest.

Oleg is busy working on Storm of War: Battle of Britain as is the rest of his team. 1C licensed the use of the code from IL-2 to another development house...apparently they are using the AI and flight model code but little else.

So I'm quite serious when I say Oleg has nothing to do with it. All of the controversy in the last few days since the announcement has been the result of not understanding this.

Its ranged from..."Oleg's sold out" to "Oleg had to do consoles because there is more money there" to less speakable things. But the guy has nothing to do with it...except by extension in terms of his previous work. I hope he's making some money off of it because what IL-2 can do is still leaps and bounds beyond the average game.

Nothing to do with it past supplying the whole flight engine code, etc, that it's based on
which is in a high level language (Java, no?) and whatever doc went with that.

But nothing after that, be sure.

There is so much that can be read into 'the code'. To me it looks like more than the flight model code was sold.
A second deleloper had time to model all that landscape including Dover Docks in detail?
This thing has come so fast I tend to think more has been handed over that just the flight model etc.
I am speculating, but would guess that Oleg means he handed over a heap of code (from BoB and IL2) and let another team get on with it. It is not affecting his work, he is not involved in any way OTHER than that he has spent years working on the code in question.

EDIT:

I stand corrected after reading this from Gaijin's developer, posted at the banana forum:

"I am very sorry to tell this - but what Oleg told you IS a fact.
What we've asked for (and what we recieved) was the source code of Il-2 (flight model and AI).

And it is all what we used.
We have no connection with BoB art/art source/source code at all.
If you think, it is not true - we are in a free country, go on.
But it is truth. We used only flight model and AI. Period."

This thing has come so fast I tend to think more has been handed over that just the flight model etc.

AFAIK the source code was handed over 2 or more years ago as I remember Oleg saying something along those lines in 2005 or 2006. Since it is was working code then I don't see that circa 2 years for a port is too remarkable, depending on what extra work has been done (see **)

It does look like the aircraft (Hurriance IIB, etc) are possibly versions of the 3D models from IL2.

The scenery - anyone's guess, but VFR is produced by a number of groups for the UK for FS2004/FSX, so it's possible to produce it in a reasonable time scale/budget. Gaijin might even have licensed the UK data from one of those VFR developers. I haven't seen any graphics from the non-UK locations from IL2:BoP so who knows what that might look like.

** In some ways the PS3 and Xbox 360 are well suited to flight sims with the multi core and 'halo' of floating point units. Native 64 bit FPUs would be better than the 32bit, but 32bit PCs seem to manage to run flight sims. The thing that is/was harder is parallelising the code to make use of it. IBM has some decent tools to help with this, and the underlying Xbox 360 and PS3 architectures are probably close enough for a reasonable commonality here. How much of this has been done for IL2:BoP I don't know - it might well just be running with a straight recompile through IBMs tools with no extra tweaking, who knows? Where the consoles are lacking is in RAM.

* As a side note it seems that a new, very detailed map of UK elevation is being produced to improve flood defences, so that might mean better resolution maps for the UK for flight sims in future. The UK has undergone some 'remodelling' since 1940 - a little courtesy of the Luftwaffe, but mostly at the behest of the locals.

One good thing I see coming out of this is that the furore this caused has I believe led Oleg and Ilya to see just how hungry the community is for SoW news and updates, and Ilya said there had been a breakdown.Hopefully we will see more regular updates from now on.

Not his best true, but I'll take 10 minutes of him fencing with Basil Rathbone (best film swordfighter EVER!!!!) over all the Indiana Jones sequels rolled into one. This guy WAS "high adventure"!!!!

'Scaramouche' (Stewart Granger vs Mel Ferrer), is a serious contender.

BTW, hard to find in DVD in Europe.

No... GUI and some of the non-physics in game stuff (online text chat?, damage messages??) is java, but AFAIK the physics engine is a more "traditional" language, not sure which one.
