I'm thinking of getting something a little different and quite fancy a space game. Nothing will ever better the original 'Elite' on the BBC Micro but, anyway, what's Freelancer like?

I'm after something that has good online play, not just dogfighty type stuff, looks great and has real depth.

It is a terrific game. I have played over 40 hrs of offline play. (Trust me that is alot) And I have more to play. The online play was fun too. You can recruit other onliners to join your group and do missions together to raise your level.

I don't want to sound too enthusiastic but the game fantastic.

You will not regret getting Freelancer!

Go and buy it today!

I didn't like it. There's very little (or none) difference in the behaviour of the various crafts, and the missions are extremely repetitive.

Freelancer is a little kiddies game.

The mouse driven no skill needed controls are really getting boring, as well as the missions

Read some reviews, the guys here are not objective.
It's quite good if you like that type of games.

I find the lack of realism, and the beautiful space graphics to be a nice diversion from the intense realism that we are after in FB. I love it, but only play it about once a week. Just my opinion. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Death is just nature's way of telling you to watch your airspeed.

I played the demo and have to say that although at first I was impressed, it is far too static for the type of gameplay they encourage. It is basically Privateer 2 with better graphics, but like that game, not too much under the hood. However........

I am an absolute fan of space combat games. I have played about every one since the original Wing Commander. If you want an awesome space combat game take a look at FreeSpace 2(or even 1). Even though it is several years old, it still looks good. I couldn't say enough good things about this game(s). Amazing storyline, graphics, varied missions, etc... The only downside is the campaign is very linear(although FS 2 does feature some branching based on player choice). You could probably pick it up for very cheap on top of it all.

I heard that for all practical purposes, it strikingly resembles Earth and Beyond. I played E&B for 3 months; great game but hyperdrive travel ironically took too long. For example, if you played the game straight for 5 hrs, 3 hrs are dedicated to pure autopilot hyperdrive travel. Well, at least the scenery is nice. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I didnt really like it. The mouse aiming system is nice, but the lead crosshair makes it incredibly easy to hit things. Also since you have a way to replenish both shields and armor, I never really felt like I was in danger of getting shot down. All it was was point, click kill target, point, click kill target etc.

Played Freelancer through to its completion - not a bad story, game looks nice, not too many bugs. Online play was somewhat limited. I'd recommend trying out Eve Online. It was what I was waiting for whilst playing Freelancer, and accounts for my lack of flying time recently :/ /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I liked it. There isn't many space "sims" and even less these kind, which slightly tries to be like Elite. If you are Elite fan, I bet you could find few entertaining hours with Freelancer. On 1 to 10 grade, I would give it 8.

It would have been nice to be able to actually fly these ships instead of commanding them Homeworld style...

Independence War 2 was ok, if you can get used to the physics engine, you should be able to find that for pretty cheap!
