Think I'll wait for the Gennadich people, even though it hurts me to say so. But I wouldn't willingly part with the cash for CFS3 - Micro$oft have chiselled far too many bucks out of me already - and it's unlikely that I would fly the WW2 component. And OFF is a off-line item, which really kills any chance it has of gracing my hard drive.

I guess the end of 2006 is only a year way.... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Thanks, had forgotten about that one. Will give it a go...still got my discs.

I install cfs3 about once a year thinking 'Well, it does have the typhoon and tempest and a big europe map...'. 30 minutes later there are no traces of it on my hd.

Being as im one of the few people in the world who didnt
1/Chuck CFS3 in the bin 15 minutes after install
2/Use the CD ROM as a coaster
3/Smear the CD in jam
4/Give the CD to that weird kid down the street who likes "Shiny things"
5/Compose a 14 page rant about how **** it was to Billy Gates
This free add on,might just justify none of the above actions
And its only took 3 years! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

WOW! .... did not figure I would get this response. I know it€s a CFS3 add-on and its free, but please do not kill the messenger ... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Yes CFS3 is pretty poor compared to PF, I uninstalled mine after a month too, but the team that put this WW-1 add-on together state they made it better then the original packaged CFS3 WW-2 sim. Plus it€s the latest WW-1 sim out right now.

Give it a try .... you can always uninstall it like you did before ... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

I too cannot wait for the Gennadich WW-1 flight sim but in the meantime, Sopwiths and Fokkers, balloon bursting ..... got to love it!

I don't own a copy of CFS3. Can anyone tell me, does it have any kind of free look capability such as we have with the mouse?
I can't muster the cash for track-ir and I'll never go back to hat switches.

No mouse view as far as I know.

I think there is a way to enable trackir in cfs3. With Newview for Il2 it is possible to use the mouse as if it was trackir input...still it's for il2. I wouldn't be surprised if something similar is availible for cfs3, though.

Ah well, I'm just speculating.

Really? Thats a shame.

CFS2 was fun for me too. I got that when I knew nothing of computers. I still remember bringing a floppy disk home with a 3rd party Brewster Buffalo on it that I somehow downloaded from a dialup computer at the local library http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif. I'd never seen a zip file before. I was so proud when I finally figured out how to extract the contents and put it in the right spot. I learned a lot about how computers work just by tinkering with the games workings, messing it up and reinstalling. Eventually I had 3 or 4 versions of it on my machine at one time. One was a WW1 version I made. Another was Pacific only. Plus a MTO and a European one. Each had their own modified menu screens, new aircraft and maps as well.

A short time later I recieved a copy of FB. A couple of months after that I got a new computer that could actually run it http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif
Since then I never looked back though.

Edit: Hat switch is the wobbly button on top of the stick (at least thats what I thought it was called).

I'm probably asking a dumb question, but dosen't the Il-2 series already allow mouse-viewing straight out of the box? What does newview do that is different? Lol, don't tell me I have to strap an optical mouse to my head http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Newview adds smoothpanning with the hat switch by using il2s built in trackir support.

Il2 only has snapviews and 'panning' mode but with preset views by deafult.

Newview (I sound like a comercial..) can also emulate trackir using the mouse and other devices.

If it was possible to use the trackir support in cfs3 in the same way then you'd have mouseview.

You use the one of the hats on your joystick(which is what I use in FB) or Track IR if you've got it(lucky buggers). CFS3 also has 6DoF IIRC, which is a bonus to those people who have Track IR, it would be really good for OFF. MAW is coming out sometime next year as well.

I would love a good WW1 sim. After looking forward to the new possibilities OFF promised for the last several months, I downloaded Over Flanders Fields today, reinstalled CFS3 and tested the new package out.

I think I've given CFS3 a fair shake the whole way: bought Firepower, installed Winding Man's scenery and Fox's effects, 1% planes, realistic sounds and you name it. They gave CFS3 new life for me for about a month, but only for a month.

Now I've got to say, OFF also will be coming off my computer tomorrow, because I immediately knew that fundamentally, it's the same stuff over again. It seems more rinky-**** with each passing month. The graphics are just not up to FB/AEP/PF standards IMO, and the flight models feel like they have no weight to them compared to ours here.

In CFS3 (and OFF) I feel like I'm in an arcade. In PF I feel like I'm actually throwing metal around the sky. How can I describe it? FB/PF gives me an experience which is a hundred times more intuitive and subtle. I can't go back!

The only thing I ever thought CFS3 (with addons) had over FB/AEP/PF was the player's ability to download cool sound effects. The fly-by sounds of those Merlins and P+Whitneys is pretty cool and adds A LOT, IMO, to immersion quality. In fact, I think that's the only reason I flew CFS3 for as long as I did (along with being able to download and look at other types of planes and wish they were in PF).

A WWI sim with the FB engine and FB-quality FMs would definitely be a lot of fun. In a WWI sim, terrain quality will also be particularly important, and what you get with OFF is not IMO, a step forward.

After being so spoiled, OFF is just not going to do it for me. I was more pleased with the Korean War add-on for CFS3, and in fact I'd still recommend that over OFF to anyone who wants to find a use for their CFS3 disc. But I'm not as particular about the "feel" of an FM when it comes to jet sims.

I feel bad downplaying what obviously has been a huge amount of work by some very talented people, but I just don't think any amount of talent and love will be able to overcome CFS3's inherent limitations. Just my disappointed 2 cents!

bzhyoyo
12-19-2005, 03:05 AM
Eldon45, you have every right to not like cfs3 and OFF but I disagree strongly with your remarks about the terrain : it's one of the best out there, but maybe your system is not good enough to see it in its full glory ?
Everybody can see the screenshots. If it's not a step forward compared to stock cfs3, then what?!?
I'm really surprised.

About FMs : sadly we didn't have the time to optimise them but we will work on them later and we will offer patches. Of course if you absolutely dislike table based sim engine FMs, there's no way you will like OFF fms. And this I consider to be a valid remark.

Last thing : maybe not your cup of tea but for others - don't diss out the game after having played it for just one hour. The campaign mode is what OFF is all about.

You know, its another flight sim game to play with. No better, no worse, it is what it is. Have fun flying around some WW-1 aircraft, then some WW-2 aircraft. Lots to play with here.

bzhyoyo--
Your points are well taken. I'm speaking out of PERSONAL disappointment. These things are very subjective.

Some clarifications...OFF terrain is definitely a step up from stock CFS3. I was comparing it, however, to Winding Man's fine previous work, which I'm familiar with from CFS3 additions. I honestly haven't seen a big step up from that with OFF. My hopes were perhaps too high for a free addon! Also, you are very right--I didn't give the OFF campaign mode much of a chance yet. But as I said (speaking very personally), the feel of the FMs is what will keep ME coming back to a sim. Finally, OFF is FREE! I definitely appreciate that very much.

I sincerely hope many people are able to download and enjoy it.

Boy we have grown a lot. I cannot beleive how mature this forum has become. Your are posting a addon from CFS3, WOW!

I would not trade in my Pacific/FB for it. But I will give it a try.

I have wanting to have a World war one base Sim for years. The Red Baron for some reason those not attrack me.

Its a shame that they cancel Knights over Europe.

I hear there is another World war one Sim in the makings base on Il2 engine. Those any know when will it be release.

There is also a addon for CFS2 to be release soon that promises to be of good quality.

I agree with MiamiEagle, this forum has come a long way. Years ago, CFS2 was my first flight sim (actually, the first PC game I had ever owned!) and I can remember avoiding threads that continued to argue who was the best, CF2 or IL2, those threads always seemed to get ugly eventually and at the time, I could swear most of the negative stuff was coming from the IL2 side. But, since getting PF and hanging out here the past year, I like how things have mellowed out a little, less mudslinging, more open mindedness towards what we all have in common, enjoying flight sims. I like the change, maybe were all getting a little older? Who knows.

Anyhoo, ya, I'm sure the makers of OFF put a hell of alot of work into bringing this FREE addon to anyone that would like to try it out. These guys should be commended.

Yes, I agree. I think we over those day when we use to argue over hours in different forums who had the Best Sim. In reality non did. They are pretty good Sim. Non are perfect but they are all enjoyable. I know I own most of them.

We have to remember we are small communitty and we need to stick together. Only those Folks in CFS3 are still annal about their Sim.

Beleive or not CFS2 and EAW are a heck of Simulators on their own accord. Once you learn how to install all the improvements done by their dedicated and talented communitty.

Pacific Fighter/FB needs no to mention as we all how this program really is good.

CFS3 is my least favorite Sim but never the lest it still a pretty good Sim.

This is just my opinion.

Only those Folks in CFS3 are still annal about their Sim.

I hope you're not referring to my post in this thread.

Anyway, what you describe was an answer in kind to a lot of unjustified bashing we got here and there. Some complaints were legitimate - and still are. But you never see people in cfs3 forums with signatures that are PF bashing, not like here with cfs3...

Otherwise, good post : some people will prefer PF, others will prefer other sims, and there are the ones who will see that each sim has its strong points and that you will look for something different from each one.

To each his own http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

PS : I'm also eagerly awaiting what the Gennadich team will come up with - the modeling is first rate and a source of inspiration.

No I did meant you. I meant other folks. You see I use all the Sims accordinmg where I want to fly. Like I said before they all have their good quality and some defeceincies.

But the mear mention of CFS2 or Picific Fighter their forums and they will start insulting you. They are always selling their sim in other forums. I beyond that kind of mentality.

I beleive if you have something good you do not need to sell it.

I like CFS3 for its short commings. To me that makes more endearing to me. The only thing that bother me obout CFS3 is the you can only in ETO.

All the other Sims have evolved to other theaters like the Pacific Theater.

But other wise I recommend all of to us to buy them all.

like I said they all have their good and bad points.

CFS2 has a World maps and basically all the planes that parcipated in World war two. Great graphics and many ships representing most of the nations involved in WWII plus Great sounds. You can mimimic every Theater and any Air Force of the era.

EAW has a great immersion factor that non of the other Sims come close. No not even Pacific Fighter/FB.

Pacific Fighter /FB probably has the best Planes in the market and many other neat features.

CFS3 has the new addon Offline and soon to come MAW.It promises to be of very good quality.

Buy them all and enjoy them all. Now you will be able to duplicate all the Campaigns in WW2. you can fly in whatever style you prefer for the day.

Today I want to fly CFS2 style and Bomb Tokyo. You can do it.

If you want to Raid London EAW style. Thats fun also.

Perhaps you prefer to fly for the VVS and Defend Mother Russia you can do it through Pacific Fighter/FB.

Now thats fun

I want to thank every one for all their effort.

Have a vey happy Holiday

I've been eagerly awaiting this one - I had bought CFS3 when it first came out - what a waste of cash that was... I cannot deal with POV that is hat switch controlled - I prefer the mouse view style of IL2 over CFS*'s historical interface style, as i have always used trackball type stationary mice.

I went and ordered the TiR3 Pro package through the OFF website, as a way of support for their free product.. what they have produced does make CFS3 worth playing again.. It's more of a game conversion, than an add-on. TiR3 makes the game very playable for me, as well as enhancing the gameplay of IL2FB very nicely.

CFS3/OFF isn't IL2FB, and vice versa - as long as you recognise each has it's own strengths and weaknesses.. you should be fine in your expectations for OFF.

I just got mine running a short time ago. Did a "clean" re-install of CFSIII using the default path and the installation went pretty smoothly. There is a lot of downloads...The main file and a number of update/patches.
Getting your pilot "enlisted" can be a bit of a pain, but not too bad. The game evidently keeps track of pilot's fate, so if you get killed you may have to create another!
Seems good so far. I flew around a bit in an Albatross and didn't have time to configure my joystick properly.

The way I understand it OFF clones some of the cfs3 files.Once OFF is installed you can delete cfs3.OFF will run on its own.

It also has a multiplayer section.Unfortunately I think it uses the cfs3 server interface. So all cfs3 based servers show up and it is hard to know which are OFF games unless the host puts it in the title.

I have gathered this from reading about OFF so some of my ideas my be incorrect.

I did a complete install & itworks really quitewell ( with TrackIR3 pro vectoring even..) It is a pretty game ( I can compare it to BoBWoV in terms of aircraft & skyscapes,) & my only gripe so far is that the Cockpits are a bit ,,,uh, spartan.By that I mean not as rendered as we have come to expect in IL-2.Have not really gotten into campaigns,so I can't speak on how many aircraft can be in the sky at one time. With about 10 my rig runs at an estimated 20-30FPS,which is OK,I guess.
I really like the menu screens tho!Splendid stuff that!

had OFF for a while now,It's Good, plenty of character http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

my only gripe would be the amount of time it takes to get anywhere, but thats not really an issue.

found one server hosting it online got killed a few times then host left.

hopefully there will be a few more servers appear.

also,it's a good idea to regularly visit the OFF site,as they update it constantly.

regards,

Rev
