Like Neron in ancient Rome, who did plague his entourage with strange poetry, I'll now try a little submariner adaptation of Shakespeare's Hamlet.

"To dive, or not to dive - That is the question:

Whether 'tis safer for the sub to suffer

The bombs and projectiles of outrageous fortune

Or to take arms against a sea of troubles

And by opposing end them.

To dive, to wait - no more - and by evading

To say we end the pursuit, and the thousand

Depth charges that our sub's hull is heir to.

'Tis a consummation devoutly to be wished ?

To dive, to wait - to escape !

Perchance to survive ?

Ay, there's the rub,

For in that wait of death what tactics may come

When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,

Must give us pause. There's the respect

That makes so short life of a destroyer's

Pursuit.

For who would bear the whips and scorns of a

Patrol, the enemy's escort, the proudman's

Contumely, the pangs of a failed hunt, the

Communication's delay, the insolence of office,

And the spurns that patient merit of the

Unworthy takes,

When he himself might his quietus make

With a single torpedo ?

Who would fardels bear,

To grunt and sweat under a weary hunt,

But that the dread of something on the eastern

Front, the undiscovered country, from whose

Bourn no soldier returns, puzzles the will,

And makes us rather bear those ills we have

Than fly to others that we know not of ?

Thus conscience does make cowards of us all,

And thus the native hue of resolution

Is sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought,

And enterprise of great pitch and moment

With this regard their currents turn awry

And loose the name of action."

All my apologies to every englishman, if any should feel their best national author misused for such a trivial matter. It is not my intention, as a fan of Shakespeare, to do that in any way. And so long that this text does not
infringe the borders of this forum, no harm will be done http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif .

You are free to improve this adaptation in any way you feel, cause my english is somewhat limited.

We did the same thing, more or less, in the LIFEBOAT thread, only we replaced lifeboats into various songs and poems and whatnot.

If any patriots have a problem with their countrymen being slighted in any way, oh'well! They had better get over it.
