toward the bottom right there is a guage with two half circles on it, the right one shows fuel amount.

The guage on the front panel is NOT a fuel guage but a combined oil temp, fuel and oil pressure guage.

The Fuel guages are located on the floor and over the pilots left shoulder.

Ok,

If you look over your left shoulder youl see the Aux guage. this is the last tank you will use up. At 25% fuel it holds almost 60gal.

Now if you look down and to the left of your seat youl see another gauge. This is your left wing tank. Its empty if you only took 25% fuel. If you take 50% the left tank will have 20gal while the Aux tank will have about 90gal or full. At 75% fuel, the Aux tank and left tank will be full while the right wing tank will have only 75gal. Thus, when you take 100% fuel all tanks will be full.

One thing though is that at 100% fuel youl use up the right wing tank first then the left wing tank and then the Aux or mayby it will swich back and forth between the right and left tank. You may or may not notice that the P-51 is more prone to stalling if you have more fuel in one wing then you do in the other.

Now OK why is it then when I take 25% fuel in the p51d that the only tank that has any fuel is the aux tank behind the pilot? this is the worst possible place for the fuel to be, the real 51 pilots hated the aux tank because its caused the 51 to handle like a pig! It was the first tank they would use and drain it down to about 20 gal so the damned thing would actually fly worth a ****! Now is it olegs bias against american hardware that lead to this lil oversight in the game? Hmmm I wonder, gee I sure would like to be able to choose what tank that quarter tank of gas goes into, or even be able to switch tanks in the game but that might actually make the p51 a match for olegs precious LA-7 and we all know we can't have that now can we!

As silly as it is...the fuel tanks really don't make any difference. We're told that the FM calculations are currently done, with regards to fuel, in terms of overall weight of the aircraft. Its evenly distributed in all areas. There is no historical instability with regards to the rear tank being filled. The guages in the game are just graphics that read out the state of the fuel tank...its nicer than a little number at the bottom of the screen saying "fuel 72%" but thats about all that they amount to. The guages work, they are in the correct places, but they are irrelevant for anything else.

If you fly your Mustang against anyone in a La-7 at the Mustangs prefered altitude of about 7000m then you will see who has the superior fighter. Or if you have a cross country run from the east side of the Leningrad map to the west side...you will see. The La-7 is a short range interceptor fighter with speed and agility and little else. Also worth pointing out that the Mustang Mark III has superior performance to the La-7 at all altitudes. But don't dogfight with them...they weight maybe half that of the Mustang and have similar engine power so their turn and acceleration are good.

Not sure if anyone has really outlined where all the guages are: Two guages are in the floor on either side of the pilots seat. The aux tank is at the back as pointed out. The front right side guage is a fuel pressure guage...you shouldn't see this drop too much except when you have a major fuel leak or you run out of fuel.
