View Full Version : Terrain Mapper

Could we get a program to make terrain for maps? there are many requests for maps and i think this would solve all of it. like simply painting on cities, forests and oceans, hills, mountains, ect, ect...

I dont see any reason not to, this would be a GREAT improvement.

It's been asked for before, and though i dont know the reasons behind why we can not make our own maps, we cant at this stage. It'd be great if we could and at the same time not interfere with the integrety of the simulator/game. But I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for it.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I've been told the map-making tool is expensive, not easy to use...and in Russian

Dosvedanaya to that idea then.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

While 1C most probably uses a Russian-language version of the map-making programme, I doubt that it is a Russian-only programme. Ian Boys most probably uses the same software and while I have no knowledge of Ian's fluency in Russian, I don't think he has a Russian-language version of the programme on his computerhttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif- nor do the makers of the coming Slovakia map, I suspect.
More likely is that 1C uses a programme with a Russian interface, and Ian a version of the same programme with an English-language interface.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

My whole point is to avoid a MS Combat Flight Simulator.

AFAIK Ian is "kinda" fluid in russian. There is no translated version of the map tool.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

The program is not Russian only. Still it is far from being friendly to use as some people may think. I doubt we would see many new maps coming if it was released for free.

In fact we would not see any new map if it was released for free. After all it's still Maddox Games who have to import the maps into the game engine.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I think it's very easy to underestimate the complexity of doing anything with Il-2's code...

Microsoft have 20 years experience in making operating systems and programs that can be built on by third parties. 1C don't have that philosophy, or at least they didn't when they built Il-2! Il-2 clearly hasn't been built with expansion in mind - they didn't put much effort into making it easy to build maps, because they thought they wouldn't need many and it wouldn't be worth the effort. They didn't make any provision for third-party aircraft addons at all - the way the code works, it is impossible to have 3rd-party aircraft addons!

(This is based on my intuition, and whispers and echos from these forums. Please take a pinch of salt.)<div class="ev_tpc_signature">
