View Full Version : OT: PHP Nuke Website tutorial?

10-18-2005, 12:15 AM
I think I am going to have to build my website on my own. I've never done such a thing, so I need a good, easy to understand tutorial to follow. Anyone know where to start? I can google it, but I want to see what resources may have worked for other poeple around here who may have tried to do something similar.

If you have a Yahoo acount they have a pretty good web site deal...
And their SiteBuilder prog is very easy to use.
2 weeks ago I was clueless about web site building.
But look what I've done...

Not finished yet so don't be too hard on me Crash...LOL
(the Paint Shop will be the public skin DL section eventualy, just taking care of my squad first)

BTW what happened to your GhostSkies site?

Not bad at all! The graphics are what scare me more than anything. I mean, this is Ghost Skies we are talking about! I'd like it to look professional! But if I do it, it will look like my 5 year old took a crack at it! lol

Not bad for a nOOb eh?

I know what ya sayin though, graphics is the hard part.
There's lots of templates available but most of them are pretty cheesy.

Are you ever going to get a reliable web host? This guys never replied never spoke, neither did that art guy whoever he was unless you know any different ive had no responce from the web host what so ever concerning account details or activation.

Crash, just keep it simple.

Take a couple of screen shots, maybe from a few tracks you planned first.
Think about evocative situations (sunset / sunrise, takeoff and landing, and combat http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif).

Snip the images down, so they don't overload your site.

Ummm - theres a GIMP tutorial in eh sinners forum that may help with using that (free) software. (Images for your website should be saved as .jpg http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif )

Just be a little careful about using any skins you've dl'd, ask the artists involved first, and respect their wishes.

By the way i'll send you screen shots of the nuke-theme ive made allthough it would be easier to get the webspace up first, we'll talk about this software on msn as well i wouldnt want you to pay for all of it go half's or something at least.

Hey Helg thats pretty good!! Crash I use Yahoo also.. but I am using thier free site which is pretty limited on bandwidth. I am going to switch to there guys (http://www.dot5hosting.com/personal.php) as soon as I clear out some other stuff and finish some other projects. When I looked around I fiound this to be the best deal. If you sign up for 2 years it is $96, basically $4 a month. 2G HD space.... 50G bandwidth a month..... Geocities came nowhere near that. If you browse the site you will see they have a pretty good builder.. but you can also use Frontpage... or some other web design tool. I knew nothing about web pages other than how to surf them when I started with the 99th site. One reason I want to upgrade is that I have gotten better at it and the limited bandwidth with the free site makes it hard to be but so creative. Even with thier best package Geocities doesnt even come cloe to Dots.... A buddy from the old 361st, Strange.. is using these (http://www.doteasy.com/index.cfm?A=seale) guys..... but from what I have seen the first one is hands down a great deal. Half the price of Yahoo with more Bandwidth.... which is what it is all about.... $$ and bandwidth.. especially if you know that you will be running the site for at least 2 years. As far as the graphics go Crash... just experiment.... do you skin? Before I started skinning I knew NOTHING about Photoshop.. now I think I can do just about anything with it and if I cant pull it out of my head I know where to go to get the info I need. You have to do it and just plug away.. you will be surprised at what you will learn. When I started the 99th site I would usuall use up all the bandwidth i about ..... 3 hits.. LOL... I knew nothing about the difference between Jpegs and GIFs.... etc....

This (http://interglacial.org/webhelp/index.html) site is also a GREAT source of info. Particularly if you use Yahoo..... lots of good stuff there. Be advised though that the site owner passed away recently.... I dont know how long the site will be up. I sent him an email and his wife responded and informed me of his passing. It is a good resource though. Use it while you can.

dont use php-nuke for anything. its got problems. i submitted code to the project many years ago... i gave up pretty quick.

i have a customer who has used it for a few years. his site gets hacked twice a year.

If you are patient and willing to learn, I like mambo better than any cms out there.

bear: dont pay a year upfront unless you have friends who swear by the hosting company.

I use Doteasy... nice download speeds, and a decent amount of File transfer limit, although the FTP server sometimes acts a bit screwy. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif
They offer an SQl database also... so thats cool for using forums on.

I am doing a degree in aspects of web development... xhtml, xml, sql.. and next semester .NET

I use http://gamers-review.co.uk to test things out... but my ability to play about in Photoshop is extremly limited.. so I usually end up with simple websites.. not real purdy like others I see.

html only, no wysiwyg plz http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

here's your tutorial (revision 1.0beta)
1. Log on to msn
2. Ask viper to do it for you

Slap as necessary if that doesnt work.

Bah shutup,

Yeh Megile i use DotEasy as a rule there simply the best hosting company on the net for what the charge. LoL yeh my FTP always screws about with them after transfering a file for around 10 minutes.

We would be using them and that would be my recommendation as well except CRASH has had offers of free sponsored webspace from 2 people only problem is we havent seen that webspace been created yet or at least i certainly havent.

As for nuke been insecure we always install Sentinal and other security packages as a rule as well as purchased software to prevent hacking, mambo is fine but it wont do what we want it to do. The only other option open to us was .ASP but since we cant get any offers to do that we decided to go down the .php route which will be easier anyway.

The free offer never replied while I was gone. I'm tired of waiting. The $90 a year offer is never online, and I'm tired of waiting. I'm going to go shop in my town and see if they can offer anything reasonable.

And Baldie, I'm told PHP Nuke is the easiest. I'm all about easy right now because I'm going to need to learn to do it.
