View Full Version : Confused about the Go-335's FM

The Go-335 was a high-alt interceptor, correct? But it seems to me that the high alt FM of the Beta version 8 Do-335 doesn't match that description. The climb rate is fantastic. The push-pull prop design just rockets up beyond 6k. 6k through 9k seems to slow down quite a bit. Almost like there is increased drag, or you lose a prop. But it is still a flyable fighter. It almost mirrors the K4's performance. At 10-12k is where I was truley disappointed. I expected performance to exceed the Spit IX or the Spit XIV. But it doesn't. Not even close. (ok, I'm exagerating. It's close) But it shouldn't under-perform the Spit XIV. And CERTAINLY not under the Spit IX! Now, I haven't compared performance to the Mustang, but I plan to soon.

Anyway, the Spit's seem to grab a lot more dense air than the Do-335 above 10k. The Spit XIV is able to make turns that the "Do" is phsically incable of. Of course, the "Do" is bigger and heavier, but what I'm trying to say is that it feels like the air underneath each plane reacts differently under the same conditions. Which leads me to believe that the high alt FM is all porked up. Sure the high alt model for the game needs worked. I've heard talk that BoB will change it all, but if the Spit XIV reacts one way, I think the Do-335 should react in an equally similar way to the same manuver, correct?

I hope they figure this out before they release this patch.

Although these don't have wing area, just wingspan might give an indication of wing size compared to overall a/c size and weight.

http://www.warbirdsresourcegroup.org/LRG/do335.html

Do-335
Wingspan of 13.8m, and median weight of 9700kg.

http://www.warbirdsresourcegroup.org/BARC/spitfire.html

Spit
Wingspan of 11.23m typical, 12.24m extended for high alt. Weight around 3427kg - 3851kg (Mk. IX and Mk. XIV)

This alone gives me an indication that the Spit would 'grab' more air. Less than half the weight with big wings, go figger. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

*looks around* Crash....????

(oh and the Spitfire XIV was the high altitude of the high altitude Spitfires if that means anything)

I know the performance of the aircraft should be different. Thats obvious. But what it seemed like to me was that the physics of the atmosphere were different between the different plance.

At low altitude the Go-335 rocked. It's not a turn fighter by any stretch of the imagination, but it's got so much horsepower that it can BnZ like no other, and can pull itself out of any sticky situation. I took on 4 Ace Spit XIV's at 3000 meters. Whenever one got close I just pulled into the verticle and they couldn't follow. I could hang on the props and keep control while the spits just fell away.

do335 engines may get more worse than griffon at higher alts http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

and yes, with such a high wing loading spit should run rings around it

That seems fair enough. The Do-335 was designed for things like fighter bomber, reconnaisance, and bomber destroying. None of these need great turn performance, so no need for the plane to be designed with compromises that make this more possible that might compromise its level speed.

LOL.

I noticed what I was testing the beta that the flyable barrage balloons had the same problem Crash was mentioning.

Anyone else notice this?

I would disagree. I would say that the collaboration between Bobsqueek, Oleg, and I for the April 1st me-155 hoax was the best.
