Just measure all your time, including minutes/hours without anyone within shooting distance on your tail.

While it is great to shake off enemies off your tails, it's even greater not to let someone on your 6 in the first place (within shooting range).

As rnzoli suggests the trick is not letting someone get on your 6 within shooting range in the first place.

Pick your fights. Always try and have either a speed or altitude advantage on your opponent.

Work in a team if you can - pair up with a wingman.

Know the strengths of both your aircraft and your opponents and then try and manipulate the battle to your strengths.

Finally practice, practice and then practice some more.

I've only started playing online recently too. There are some very good pilots out there. Watch out for the wing man up high. One flys low, one high and when you go after the low one, boom the high one gets you. After I die, I hit control f2 ( if the server lets me) and watch for a minute and see some tactics.

Yeh i`m finding the vision thing a big problem,I use the hat switch,so a Track IR is on the list.Is there a server I can access that you can fly in a mission scenario rather than dogfight.Perhaps escorting with a group of bombers,or some ground attack? Perhaps i`d learn more there, the dogfight seems to be a free for all,I have seen a number of people flying as a sort of group on AFJ,but have yet to be invited into that sort of role myself.I thought it would be tougher than the AI,and I am enjoying it.Some of the fliers are superb.

It's got grove.
It's got meaning.

n00b:

n.

1) A person who is new to a game
2) A person who, regardless of experience, lacks the skill or copmetence to be competitive in a certain game
3) Someone who tends to whine or complain when being beaten at a game - often done by accussing more skilled opponents of hacking
4) One who may talk trash, claiming to be elite at a game, only to be beaten down by a better player, or will turn down any games when challenged by better players.

v.

1) To act or behave in the way that a n00b would
2) Behaving as if lacking experience, skill or knowledge

NOTE: Can be used with a number of connotations. Often is used mockingly or in a manner of jesting. Other times is used seriously, but is often considered a brainless or weak insult when used alone as a supposed malicious insult. Is generally considered rude and deragatory unless a person is displaying disregard and general apathy towards other players - in this case, skill may be a non-factor (see definitions 3 and 4).

See also n00bed, n00bie, and newbie

n.

This n00b just charges in at the enemies and gets owned in the first 10 seconds of the game.

v. Look at this guy n00bing it up - I've never seen anyone die so fast, so often.

Welcome to the club. I'm still getting murdered, not as bad as before, but it's all part of the learning process.

BTW, I love how this community welcomes the newer members, unlike other games in which newbs are ignored, flamed, etc. Here, we offer to help out newer folks. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Just hang in there guys. Online is wayyyyyyyy harder than offline. It takes time to learn to deal with real pilots. You'll actually get better agaisnt good pilots. Join in at WarClouds or Historia or Zekes and Wilcats to fly with some really good pilots. You'll get better trust me or do as I do..Go Down in Flames... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif

hey smurfy and welcome.

Expect to spend plenty of time getting pwned up. It a fact of on line life. The fisrt 200 times you get shot down are the most important learnign experinces you can have, so get through them quickly. 8^) Record tracks and play them back for yourself so you can see where you were going wrong. Off line try to set yourself up with some training experinces for things like gunnery and taking off and landing. Fly lots of carrier traps, because once you master that you will be well on your way to being good at stall fighting. Definatly get on comms and try to find an experinced wingman to fly with. THere is a tonn to be learned there. Keep flying, and after a few months you will be well on your way to becoming an ace. Also look up and read the varios free books like Horrido! In them you will find lots of very valuable tips.

Hi!

It's rather nasty at first. Here are ten hints that has helped me survive at least:

1. Get altitude before you engage any targets.
2. Get altitude before you engage any targets.
3. Don't bleed away the speed you aquired while diving to attack the enemy unless it's well considered. Keeping your energy advantage is always the key to victory.
4. Change the convergence for guns/cannons to something like 200/225. Don't fire until that range...
5. Fly with 50% or even 25% fuel if the map is small (they usually are).
6. Don't do head on attacks. Get some separation (ie don't head right at the aproaching enemy) and turn "into him" before you pass each other. That way you have a good possibility of getting the upper edge in the dogfight.
7. If someone is dead on your tail a scissors manouvre is a good way of loosing him. Hard turns left and right, bleed that speed and and let him pass...
8. Know your aircraft. Never dogfight a plane that is a better turner than you or try to outclimb a faster climbing enemy...
9. Never fire long bursts with your guns!
10. Initially, use a plane that is easy to fly and has guns that are easy to score hits in - read Spitfire.

More seriously, the above suggestions are spot on.

It's actually very easy to shoot people down if the server settings are 'realistic' (no externals) as you can creep up on people and bag them from very close range without them ever knowing you were there. This normally involves getting a lot of altitude (points 1 and 2) then spotting the enemy before he spots you (difficult if you are above him).

With practice, it all comes together. Which is a shame as most real WW2 pilots didn't get a second chance, never mind a 198th chance.

Mouselook is the way to go if you don't have TIR IMO.

Suggest you fly on warclouds. You'll get beaten into shape in good time. After perhaps 8 hours you might get lucky and shoot somebody down.

Stick with it and you'll find that after a few months you're a lot better than you might at first have thought possible.

BTW, Teamspeak is vital!
