View Full Version : Getting "increadible surrounding sound"

Here's an Oleg quote I found on Airwarfare...

One my old German friends, who is also play IL-2 series come to Moscow and to me at home...
I tried to show him what we are doing (it was during development of PF)... First his impression was about sound :
ST: "Did you make new sound?"
OM: "No"
ST: "But is sounds increadible and in no way comparing to my home PC!"
OM: "Once more repeat - no changes in sound..."

The I expalained him why I have good sound and he is not: The sound engine designed to utilize mid to Hi End speakers and amplifiers. When it plays on good sound system - you will get increadible surrounding sound. I have good system (two systems: Inspire 5.1 and another one - simply Hi End equipment. He was listening the Inspire system, which was adjusted right without over boosting of bass and treble and as well with switched off all Creative effects which makes the sound distorted comparing to original)

So my question is this:
Has anyone been able to replicate this? By this I mean, has anyone been able to make this game sound great by using high end components?

I do not ask this to try to disprove Oleg, but because I would go out and buy whatever I needed to make the game sound great (to some point anyway).

Well, I surely cannot tell if the sounds I hear are the same sounds Oleg hears... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

But, I'm using an Audigy 2 with the latest Beta drivers from CreativeLabs, connected to a 5.1 Creative 5100 speakerset ....

(With only drivers installed, not those other creative software utils/controlpanels or whatever... I even rid of the registry/run entry 'CTHELPER.EXE')

Me thinks sounds are great!

Great surround, great depth. Like, while flying a Bf110, ground attack mission, I sometimes can hear there's something wrong, like an engine running badly, being hit-a-bit... just something you hear out-of-the-ordinary, different from the usual droning of both engines... then I know .... I might be in trouble!

As for them sounds in general: Surely in this game you cannot recognize a Merlin ... but... how could we ever recognize a Merlin? How do we know what a Merlin sounds like?

If we're lucky... from a live fly-by... if less lucky from a video or audio recorded fly-by...

What's this game all about? Not fly-by, but in-cockpit!

With my current setup, I'm more than happy with them sounds!

Have Fun!

My sounds are great and substantially better than what I've heard of recordings on other peoples systems.

I've got a decent set of ($100 mind you) Altec Lansing VS-3151 5.1 speakers, using my Soundstorm ACU on my A7N8X Deluxe motherboard (this is simply the best onboard audio solution around and better than my Audigy 1), and I've got Sound Extensions checked to on.

Now, the little trick for the Soundstorm is to make sure it finds the right mode for playing audio.

Check for this line at the bottom of the sound entry in your config.ini file:

SoundFlags.forceEAX1=0

I think by default this is set to 1 and it sounds like ****. But experiment and see.

What I find is that with extensions on you get some very nice sounding audio (the games sound engine is very detailed if not authentic sounding) and what is key is switching between inside and outside. Inside you get a nice cockpit feel to the sounds. The guns and engine sound like they are slightly muffled by the construction of the plane your are sitting in. Outside the sounds are completely full.

Without extensions, the engine basically sounds the same inside and out and its just ****.

Experiences varry and sound is sometimes more subjective than visual so its a tough thing sometimes.

I always had **** sound from this game until last week when I changed the following EAX settings in the config:

SoundExt.occlusions=1 ~ EAX - use occlusions (object in the way of sound path)
SoundFlags.hardware=1 ~ Use hardware EAX acceleration
SoundExt.acoustics=1 ~ EAX - use acoustics (room influence)
SoundExt.volumefx=1 ~ EAX - use volume effects
SoundExt.extrender=0 ~ Use an External renderer for EAX
SoundFlags.forceEAX1=0 ~ Force EAX1 effects

I had and Audugy 2 and the new settings made it sound great. I just got a X-fi yesterday and it even sounds better. I couldn't believe my ears.

I've got a 60" Plantronics headset, which sounds good with the bass boost turned up. Without the bass frequencies being produced properly, you probably lose one or two 'layers' of engine sound that are present (there are about three or four layered sounds I think, which make the engine 'growl' a little more). The engines, guns and the bangs/explosions sound a little weaker if the bass isn't produced. Whether the slight 'additional depth' would be worth buying a new sound system for, well, personally I don't think so unless you're going to use it for other media like music and film too.

I have an Audigy2 (Platinum). Did you notice much of a perfomance hit after making these changes?

Not much or enough to care - but just keeping mirrors off is worth the sacrifice.

I found mind-blowing full surround 3d sound by chance.

I have good stuff (Thiel and Kef speakers, Energy subwoofer, Marantz 120W/channel integrated amp) but prefer to use a headset for VAC and voice comm, plus I can really crank up the volume without freaking the neighbours in my apartment building.

So I bought a Plantronics DSP 500 headset, uninstalled the software for my questionable Turtle Beach sound card, turned down the hardware setting for the sound card to the far left, selected the headphone settings in the Setup and use the headset software and DSP.

Then, for no reason except a couple glasses of wine (OK several) I selected Sensaura in Setup, even though the DSP 500 is not a Sensaura headset.

Jaw-dropping sound. I can open the canopy, turn my head to the left and hear the very quiet flutter of the wind on the edge of the cockpit. The sound of munitions hitting my plane vary in volume and sound depending on the proximity to me in the cockpit. There are several sounds in the release of bombs. I can actually hear rounds passing through my cockpit from one side to another. Planes woosh over my head so that I can't help but flinch. And yes, I can also listen to the performance of my engines.

I remember the sound was kind of buggy for FB when it first came out, but with my current settings the sound in this game is not only better than any other game I play, it makes the game for me. it's the best immersion factor I've found.

I got the card for BF2 and have Sennheiser PC165 headphones - BF2 supports X-fi and the game effects are outstanding with the "Ultra High" settings. The screams in the "Kubra Dam" map will creep you out. My iTunes kinda sounds better - less over-sampled I guess.

Hi all

I get great sound

I have a phillips 5.1 sound card with a medusa headset, I have logitec speakers also but I don't tend to play them to loud.

I love using the headset. It's great when you hear a plane pass over you! my head reverbarates!!! I swear I caught myself looking up one time!!

Oh one question. What settings do you have your sound on in game? I often up my mhz settings to the top one I find the quality much better(obviously). playback channels - 32, speaker type - surround, 3D engine - balanced, sample rate - 44100

Such a system would even make Jefferson Starship sound good. I don't really think it proves that our current FB sound is top notch though. I wonder, with all that kit, can a Mk108 still be heard up to 10km away?

Thats for sure. When I feel like getting serious about music I go downstairs to my Manley monoblocks, Coincident Victory speakers, and Rega P3 and listen to my vinyl. I know I sound like a snob http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif but vinyl sounds better than CDs...

truely fantastic speakers

vinyl has a warmer, rounded sound, which is what makes it nice http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

i noticed my audigy 2 zs had a old mans setup, the high pitch stuff, was really owwwwww!, too strong http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

as u get older, u get more sensative to bass, but less to high frequencies...

Wow - that was a hold over from Coasties 9800 pro settings - thanks for catching that.

there VERY clear, preicise, redifined bass for me personaly, its not boomy at all.
can go painfully load without distortion

they go for about 60,000quid, not sure, no ones bought any yet http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

there probably the best in the world tho http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

DarkStar68: I was comparing your conf.ini to mine -- I'll be trying the sound settings. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

One thing I did notice was your "TypeClouds=" location. I knew I'd put it in, but it wasn't in my [Render_OpenGL] section, so I dug up the readme:

----------------------------
"The new patch introduces brand new clouds. In order to use them you must manually edit the conf.ini file located in your main game folder before launching the game. Open the file with a text editor, locate the [game] section and in the TypeClouds= line write in either 0 or 1, then save the file.

TypeClouds=0 - old clouds
TypeClouds=1 - new clouds"
----------------------------

It was in my [game] section of conf.ini, after all, and I wasn't going insane (too quickly anyway).

Best way to get good sound when using headphones I have found is to run a powerful subwoofer and sit on it.

i got a fortisimo 7.1 sound card, with 7.1 surround, well, actually i have a 14.2 setup.(added an extra speaker to each channel) cheap and nasty speakers and bass. but, the sounds are still quite amazing, apart from the falling bombs. they sound very commodore 64 ish, if u know what i mean lol
