View Full Version : Which WWI Plane should be the first to be made?

I know that Oleg is keen on the idea of WWI planes being modelled for IL2/FB. So that begs the question, if the game only had ONE model of a WWI plane for awhile (until the talent in the WWI community started making more), which model would be the first one to start with?

I imagine that whichever one was chosen, for awhile it would have it's own servers set-up for WWI dogfights. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Any of you WWI guys have an idea? Would it be the Nieuport 17? the Sopwith Pup? the Bristol F2b? what?

I'm asking because the thought of flying some of these gentle kites is appealing (a whole different kind of DF is to be had) but I'm ignorant as to the varients etc.

I'll be curious to read some more learned reply's.

I`d say let the earlier planes come out first and so on as the war was moving further.

No doubt a lot of people will ask for Fokkers and Spads, but this is a Russian game named after the indestructible Sturmovik. It only follows that we should honor the indestructible bomber of the first war, the Sikorsky Ilya Mouramets.

Well you are certainly within your rights to cast the vote for that plane, but wouldn't it be better for the first plane to be one that players on opposing sides could fire up and fly against one another, while they waited for the 2nd plane to be made?

That would logically be a fighter varient correct?

Still, that's a nice big plane, over some weird looking terrain ya got there. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

IL2 might be a Russian game but there were two sides in that war, so a German plane would be just as valid.

My choice would be the Fokker Dr-1 Triplane.

Strictly a turn fighter, which would appeal to most flight sim players.

Albatros D.III would be a good first choice. Very manuverable, two guns, and more "skin" appeal than an Allied fighter.

That would probably be either the Morane Bullet or the Fokker EIII.

My choice would be Fokker DVII or SE5a (because they were the best). Maybe the DrI because of von Richthofen.

BTW the Nieuport28 was actually poorer in performance than the N24 if I remember correctly.

The first aircraft to see combat werent fighters at all, but scouts (Mostly 2-seaters) armed with darts, pistols, rifles and shotguns. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif The Farman bi-plane, Bleriot, Taube, B.E.2 and the first Albatros comes to mind...

I used to be a big fan of the Biggles WWI flying novels. I'd love to pilot the Sopwith Camel. For an opponent, the Albatros D III would be my choice. If you can squeeze in the SE5a, Albatros DV and the Pfalz DIII as well, that would be even better.

XyZspineZyX
10-19-2002, 03:49 AM
I can't resist. LOL

I would love to see a two seater that can also do some dogfighting like the Bristol F2b or a Hanover CL.IIIa so that we could take advantage of multicrew which just isn't available in other WWI sims yet.

I'd be happy with anything though.

morane and eIII - let the games begin

XyZspineZyX

I'd like to see the Camel first. SE5A, Albatros and SPAD XIII beeing next. These are late planes, but the entire airwar got big late. So these are the important planes.

Isn't it interesting to see how many different fighter types were in service in WW1 compared to WW2? There was a new plane around almost each week whilest 30 years later each nation developed 2 or 3 models and that was basically it.

The people working on the WW1 planes are not part of the company. It's all 3rd party work. From the updates I've seen it looks like the first plane that will be finished will be the Albatross D3. Of course, no cockpit work has started yet so it's still anyone's guess what will be finished first.

We are focusing on planes that flew on the eastern front. While I would LOVE the IM to be made, it's a beast. I highly doubt we will see it. Still, you never know.
Right now, there are people working on the N11, Alb series, Spad 7 and Pfalz D3. The E3 and Morane would both fit right in except for the fact they were both wing warpers and it is a bit daunting to try to model the twisting wings up to IL-2's standards so while several people have expressed an interest in doing them, no one has submitted any work yet. Other planes that we are looking at for the Great War period are the Sikorsky S-16 and the M9 flying boat, a Hansa-Brandenburg that flew exclusively on the eastern front is a candidate, and there are also candidates for the Civil War period such as the Fokker D7 and the Sopwith Snipe to name a couple.

Anyone with 3DStudio Max and modelling experience that would like to try their hand at a WW1 bird can contact me at WW1Project@attbi.com

Sopwith Camel. I know of no other WWI fighter still flying.

Yep, there is one original sopwith Camel still flying

with all original running gear! It is in the US.

Air Classics test flew it early this year.

The fact that one still flys should allow more than

the usual insight as to flight characteristics. Just

ask a pilot.

I'd have to vote for the Pup. Historically there may well be better choices - like the Spad 13 or the Camel, but I like the Pup!

Give us an Alb II and the Pup and we'll all be happy - best matchup of the war!

- That would probably be either the Morane Bullet or
- the Fokker EIII.

No, there are lots of other planes earlier than that. The first plane to see combat was with a guy firing a pistol into his opponents plane. I cant remember what plane it was now.

The earliest planes you could fly in Red Baron 3D were the E3 and morane bullet. -doesnt mean they were the first.

By the time the allies were able to succesfully copy the synchronizing gear the morane bullet was no longer used and was replaced by the Nieuport 11.

Well MAybe I'm just exagerating here, but AFAIK Il2 FB "IS an WWII ERA" game, and IMHO, threre is no place for any WWI planes... There would be more apropriate to make another WWI sim, based on Il2 engine , wich IMO, would be quite Cool, But I'can't see the "use " of WWI plane s in FB...
Afterall, this game purpose is Historicall accuracy, and ww1 planes will affect that.
No offece, but Sibce we don't have a Pe8 flyable on that basis, we definitely shoudn't have WW1 planes. I Dunno if any WW1 planes were used in WW2, but if there were any, I suppose those could be accepted ...
Someone before said that there should be better made cockpit's fot he biplanes that already are in-game, well I agree....
