Heya, first post! Please forgive any n00bishness on my part.

I was just wondering if Ubi might possibly, at some point down the line, publish an artbook for "Assassin's Creed."

The artistry of the game is stunning; everything from the rugs hanging on the walls to the shoes of the peasants on the street has been detailed down to a t, and I for one am just dying for an artbook that'd both provide a closer, more detailed look at all of that effort and a hint of how they arrived at that end product. This game was in production for four years and I'm guessing it went through many different incarnations before achieving the lyrical end product: I'd relish the chance to look a bit behind the scenes and see a bit of how and why they ended up making the choices they did.

I'd especially adore learning more about how they achieved the kind of animation quality they did. Really, this is cinema-quality stuff: simply watching Altair climb a wall and run across a beam is mesmerizing. What kind of research went into that? How'd they keep their character vision consistent? how many of the actions were motion-captured and how many created by hand?

Here's crossing my fingers and hoping that this kind of book becomes available in the future!

There is something of an artbook in the stratedgy(spelling?) guide. I doubt it has all thos that you mentioned(which I would love to see as well, by the way), it DOES have some other artwork for the game.

:O There is an art book already available (http://www.target.com/Assassins-Creed-Limited-Art-Book/dp/076155873X/sr=1-3/qid=1196048024/ref=sr_1_3/601-9936430-3742511?ie=UTF8&index=books&rh=k%3Aassassin%27s%20creed&page=1)...in fact, I ordered it yesterday. I'm not sure if it has the art you'd want though, but there you go. It's usually bundled with the game guide, but some places (like Target) sell them separately also, I think.

Edit: I think I posted at the same time as Tela...oh well...same thing. :P

ooh! Is this just matt paintings?

That that artbook is supposed to reveal the "birth of Altiar" is promising: I've been wondering how they finally arrived at the final design for their titular hero. So many video games are going for the huge Blocky look for their heroes (unless they are Square Enix in which case Whispy and Femmy is the name of the game) and how they got the design of Atair who is both dangerous and volitale and someone you might possibly overlook if you passed by him in the street. I know the inspiration for his look was a Bird of Prey, but I don't know any more. I'd like to see any other looks he might have gone through.

And I want to see him without his hood on. Maybe in the sequel, hm?

They were saying his appearance was based off a model. The rest was a raptor(bird of prey). Though...fingers crossed for a de-hooding in a sequel!

@ DreamerM: I'm not sure what his name is. Jade mentioned in a video that he was based on a model in a magazine. I've never heard of the magazine, and I can't remember the name.

And I'm still waiting to see Master Cheif's face!!!

Well he does have the best, most important chin since Senator Palpatine. Wonder how many chins they went through before they decided on that one.

And Master Chief's face will never be revealed. That annonemity is too like him now.

I also wanna know more about the voices and how they were cast: Altair sounds musical, almost angelic, which creates an interesting contrast for his temper and his deadly impulses, and thus gets the gamer caught up in his character and trying to figure it out.

And I want to see story boards for the cinema scenes and how they worked out a way to make them psudo interactive and what level of freedom to give the player. And I want..I want...

I want a bigger artbook! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

I'm not one to toot the company horn (well actually... I am), but this is an awesome book.

As a long time comic book fan I've seen some poorly and hastily put together art books and this is definitely NOT one of them.

So much more than a book full of screenshots this book has commentary from level designers, art directors, producers, and more.

Full descriptions and design notes for "the nine", level designs, and insanely detailed art and descriptions of Altair.

Very cool book.

As for that picture...wow. The person who looked at that pretty-faced gay sailor and thought "that's our killer chin!" was somekind of crazy genius. What's the name of that model?

...explains a lot about Altair, actually. He's not a natural jerk, he's just frustrated. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif It's about time we've had a gay video game hero!

I'm pretty sure it's not a joke, as I recall Jade saying(in that video) he had a sailor hat.

Just ry imagining him in normal clothes, and without makeup. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

There is more art in the actual artbook, but it is sort of one with the guide.

At what? They gay sailor-ness, the me-yay-ness or something else?

It's just an image. Getting "sick inside" at an image just because it suggests homosexuality is kinda.... can I say n00bish?

Now, getting mad at it because it's a tacky poster with tacky colors for an iffy product is a valid complaint. :P

Well I got the artbook. I checked three stores. It was in the last one. I had to get the game guide too, which I put on the shelf and will NOT look at until I've either finished the game or gotten hopelessly stuck.

On to the artbook.

bukowski113, you were not kidding. I don't know who the artists were whom Ubi hired to do their concepts, but the stuff is stunning. I was interested to see that the look of Altair hasn't really changed much since the original conception, as well as the sheer amount of RESEARCH that went into the game, wow... I guess that was jade's job, (I don't know what a producer does! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/bigtears.gif) but the effort they went to to hire some three different historians and how they changed the characters around for the sake of historical accuracy really amazes me. And all the effort they put into things really shows in the game: it's stunning, it's big, and it's loads of fun.

Well done, Ubi. Thanks a lot. And I look forwards to AC2, AC Collector's Edition released at the five-year aniversery, and any other artbooks.. This one's great, but I could look at this stuff all day, and there's only some 30 pages!

The trailer storyboards were very interesting: of course the pre-rendered trailer had to be complete in and of itself... It's like an independant short film. The storyboards were facinating.

Huh. Yeah I can see that. That model's kinda what I expected him to look like, and they did a good job of capturing his likeness in the game.

He must have been cast after they did the concept art that's included in the book: in the thumbnails in which he has his hood off, Altair has a different, much more genaric face.

I bought the artbook kinda by accident - it was bundled together with the only game guide in the store, so rather than go home without the guide I purchased the artbook. As such I didn't really care either way what was in the artbook and I half expected it to be a disappointment, but I read through it and learned quite a bit about the genesis of the game. It's more focused on the art (no surprise there) but it does give some insight into the development process. I wouldn't say I was overawed by it but I can't say it disappointed me either. It's a solid product.

Oh hell yeah. Just look at him, he's beautiful in a kind of sharp-edged, wirey way. They actually had a good eye, casting Francisco. He has a kind of timeless quality, and looks more intense and hardcore then the typical Poster Boy Pretty looks. He's not Mr. Ken Doll, or Mr. Girly Elf or even the Classy Hunk. He does look driven, in a kind of sharp-edged way. Seeing full shots of his face, I can understand how they'd look at that and think "that's our 1100th century Assassin." Which sounds wierd. But I can buy it.

And don't look down on models, male or otherwise. It's not an easy industry and the job can literally twist you in ways you don't expect: you need to be adaptable, creative and have a very thick skin.

I find it interesting, the differing views of each gender towards models. Little girls dream of being models, look at the covers of magazines with envy, starve themselves in an attempt to achieve that look. Boys seem to sneer at male models.

Why is that? Is modeling somehow sexy for women and not men? Why is it acceptable that a woman makes a living off of simply looking stunning, whereas a man is considered...what? A homosexual or Girly man? For living the same way. Is it a double standard or a simple assumption that no one wants to look at a man, however attractive he is, which is just not true?

At some point near the end of the game with the dialogue going on, where you can move the camera around, I got a good view of his face and it just looked like Desmond. Maybe they used the same character model?

Also, the posted picture of that male model is reminiscent of Desmond.

Nah. They look similar but not identical. Just look at the mouths and the shape of the face: Altair's is more clean-cut and delicate, where Desmond looks more square and modern.

Altair also has a more emotionless face. Love the scar, though. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Hm, well I can see some similarities between Alta´r and the male model, but I personally would have liked Alta´r better if he looked just a liiiitle bit more, eh, manly, rough. I mean, not that they should've made him all bulky and over the top muscular, but.. I don't know. Make his face a little less skinny, a little more beard- as in, I'm a mean fighting machine/super-killer and we don't shave on secret murder-missions :P
So, a little bit less model-boy look and a little more Oded Fehr. Just a little.

Snakes on an Overachiever!

The Francisco Model guy's done tons of stuff! In addition to fashion and fronting a rock band, he's also hosting an online TV show, participating in national-level track-and-field competitions, he's a trained massuse, and a bartender.

This guy is so http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

That's the thing though, that sort of look is the usual one for a video-game hero and the kind of thing we expect. Even though the Conan type really wouldn't have fit for the kind of character they wanted Altair to be.

He's not a tank, he's not a warrior or a barbarian or a "fighting machine." Yes YOU can play him as a tank, but that's not what his character is supposed to be about. He's an ASSASSIN, the "Blade in the Crowd:" what makes him exceptional is he's fast, agile, and inconspicuous. He's not abnormally tall or beefy, so you wouldn't automatically assume he's a threat, and his best attacks are sneak attacks and counter-attacks, turning the enemies own moves against them. He's not going to overpower them with sheer muscle.

The look he has fits with his core gameplay: he's lethe, he's dangerous, he looks fast and fierce, like the eagle he's supposed to be. Kudos to Ubi for being unafraid to forsake the video-game hero archetypes when the gameplay suggests something different.

I'll admit a certain amount of shallowness in that if he HAD looked less like Francisco Rendez and more like Brandon Fraizer, I would have never picked up this game: I would have assumed it was another Midevil-themed Hack-and-Slash title.

Well, I get what you're saying, but I don't mean that they should've turned him in the next Conan lol. I don't mean making him more muscular/beefing him up. Just less boyish. And just a *little*. Empasis on *little* http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

You think Francisco is boyish? You haven't looked at many models. He's downright beefy compaired to some of them out there, in fact in men as well as women models the Doe-Eyed, Pouty-lipped look predominates. Francisco at least has a strong jawline and a glare no one need be ashamed of. He's very masculine, with just enough delicacy to avoid the Ken-Doll look.

And his youthful look bellies his youthful carelessness. He's kind of a young hot-head. I know I'm in the minority here, but I think his voice was well-cast too: he sounded musical, almost angelic, which again clashes with his obvious temper.

I think he was perfect, and I think Ubisoft can build a great franchise off of him.

Yes you do, when you're posing as a monk. Monks always shaved. It was one of their identifying features.

Besides, Altair sports some fine four-o-clock shadow.

manly, rough.

The sort of men that men want to be and men think women want. Altair's plenty rough. He's just a lethe, streamlined kind of rough. And he's plenty manly as well. Don't be so overly defensive, guys. I throw Square-Enix's lovable she-males at you. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif Sure they make you boys insecure, but the ladies love 'em.

Altair's the perfect medium. Not too skinny, not to beefy, not tall or short, pretty and still masculine, plus I bet a date with him, wondering if and when he'll pull out that knife and shank you, must be an adrenaline rush.

I like androgyny as far as imaginary men go (it's hilarious that I resent it for the most part on real people)... though I think Altair hath converted me away from androgyny at the moment.

>_> I like something more like Altair than a pretty-boy in real life... minus stubble. Stubble is uncomfortable for the kissing...

Tela

I agreed until you got to the "shank you" part. I don't see him just randomly killing a person. Of course, while trying to imagine this, I see him killing someone with a strange, almost compulsive jerk.

I don't like pretty boys, like I said I like edgy, but I do have this strange love for long hair. The longer the better.

And I love stubble. My boyfriend doesn't shave but has one of those trim things (dunno what it's called in English). Everytime I hug him my cheekbones turn red because they touch teh stubble but I love that too.. ^^;

I currently blame my father. I hated his stubble with a burning passion when I was little and now I associate the concept of kissing a man with stubble with the feeling like my face is getting rubbed with a cheese grater. I dunno, I like clean shaven.

I like long black hair as well, but I have this thing for blonde too. I'm a brunette myself and I suppose you always like what you don't have.

Why'd you want to see Altair's hair? I bet it's all mussed from the sweating and the rubbing on the hood.

Though if you want to know what it looked like, there's a few ways you can go. Monks of the time period usually shaved their heads, but if you don't want to go that route, then I donno, find a picture of Francisco Remez you like and copy that. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

A frustrating feature of the artbook:

The concept art and renders, which are stunning, are not credited to individual artists. We get a big list of "credits" in the back, but it's impossible to know who did what painting.

Give artists credit for their work please!!
