Good evening dear community

Through our intense tests today with a Preview/Review version of Silent Hunter 3 for the AOTD-Clan in combination with a GeForce 6600 GT we can say one thing for certain:

The water animation/graphics are made with PS 1.1/2.0.

This leads to the conclusion:

There is absolutely NO difference in the Waters presentation between a PS 1.1/2.0 and a PS 3.0 Graphics Card.

Users of i.e. ATI X800 / 9800 or the slightly old GeForce family may take a deep breath. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Oh and please: Stay tuned for a Full Review of the Game where we'll be showing things others didn't. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/10.gif

A good night to everyone of you and soon - GOOD HUNTIN'! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Finally, someone is going to release a **** review! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

It's bs that everything is so secret till 5 days before launch. Maybe more people would be anticipating if they just market the game. IMHO

So far, PS3.0 looks like a$$ anyways. *cough*Splinter Cell Chaos Theory*cough*

Since you have the game how about popping the hood open and seeing if the res can be altered in the .ini.

Ok so it pretty much does what the name suggests, but why would gaming cards be so far behind the cards I've had in my workstation over the years then? CAD cards have been able to do that since I got into the business, is it a price issue, as CAD cards run into the thousands.

I hate to post another silly question, but I have been searching quite frantically for the PS version of my card, but to no avail (not even the bloody manual could tell me)

I have a Nvidia Geforce 4 Ti4600, and was hoping if anyone could tell me the PS/VS version it has.

Thanks.

@ViperU48:

Your card supports PS1.1 and VS1.3, therefore fulfilling DirectX 8.1 specifications.

Thanks mcgyvr81! Didn't know where to look for the info, I appreciate your response.

PS1.1:
GF 3 and 4 series (except MX)
Radeon 8500, 9000, 9100, 9200

PS2:
GF FX series (although anything below 5600 sucks pretty badly)
Radeon 9500, 9600, 9700, 9800, X800 series

PS3:
GF 6600 and 6800

So far, PS3.0 flat out sucks and I am in no way convinced of its benefit with regards to gaming.

IL2, although it runs well with PS3.0 on my computer, doesn't, IMO, look as good as the water without P.S3.0 enabled. SC:CT Demo flat out looks like schiesse. lol

Only to introduce some uncertainty again http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif The cards might support the required p.s. but that doesn€t necessary mean the card is fast enough to use it. It€s a common problem with new technology, first they introduce some new functionality but then it usually takes a while before you can actually use it for real.

I totally agree with you. For example I have a GF 6800 GT, overclocked to an ultra (with changing the stock cooling system to a Arctic Cooling nv silencer 5). And in Pacific Fighters, enabling PS 3.0 has a dramatic impact on framerate, which falls from 30 to 50 % in comparison to when PS 3 is disabled. So my 6800GT does support PS3.0 but in PF I have to disable it http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif

That's wy I'm quite happy that SH3 runs without this framerate-eating PS3.0 http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

not exact radeon 8500 supporte pixel shader 1.1 to 1.4 (remember morrowind should have been better looking with 1.4 but they didn't go due to the limitation of nvidia cards more than 50% of the marketin 2002)

gf3 and gf4 serie doesnt support 1.4 and at the time directx 8.0 was specified to go to 1.4

pixel shader 2.0 is what your namme ps2 is suported by all real directx 9.0 card

(5200 is a directx 8.0 card as the serie of 9000 9100 9200 ati card (bad name for directx 8.0 card)

pixel shader 2.1 is called ps3.0 and is supported only a this time by the geforce 6 series (great series) ps3.0 is not a graphical improvement only new way of shader branching (they are calculated by another way)

Yes. PS3.0 only improves the number of operations that can be processed in a period. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

EDIT : which, in fact can lead to better visual rendering if developers take this advantage to create more beautiful effect but with the same technology (allowed by the operations improvment) http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/mockface.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I have read elsewhere that the Geforce FX5900 Ultra has PS 3.0 capabilities its just that Nvidia have not enabled it as yet in any drivers. The likely hood is it may never see the light of day as they were only experimenting with the tecnology ready for the 6x range.

Sinclair07_fr
03-11-2005, 03:16 AM
And enabling it on a 5900 -even ultra- would be a nonsense as it is yet very costly on frame rates on my overclocked 6800 GT... Any one got the same experience with PAcific Fighters ? (i dont know any other game that featuers PS3.0...)

I use it in PF.

Splinter Cell : Chaos Theory uses PS3.0 as well if you want it too (selectable ina menu). But I must say, the graphics/colors in SC:CT look messed up when PS3.0 is enabled. FPS are about the same with it off though.

Sinclair07_fr
03-11-2005, 03:24 AM
you're right i also tried the Chaos Theory demo, and there again enabling PS3.0 has a huge FPS hit, and even some colour bugs. All is fine when PS3 are disabled... Maybe nvidia drivers are not enough optimized...?

That's what I'm guessing.

I might try some of the newer beta drivers (the ones WITHOUT the temp. bug http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif) and see if they work. The 66.93s completely suck.

quote:
66.93s completely suck

Yes, at least if you have a recent graphic card.

A few weeks ago I installed the last WHQL 71.90 forceware drivers which are very good... But the temp bug is here (I think there is a 20?C offset which gives m http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif e a 62? temp just after the boot...). And the PS3 are not that optimized. But in 3D Mark 2005 my results skyrocketed from 3500 to 4800... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/mockface.gif

Sweet drivers...... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

JG27_Arklight

Try out the 71.20 drivers. I have heard quite a few good things about them.

Get them from the www.evga.com (http://www.evga.com) site though as they have passed WHQL, IIRC.

Thx i'll give it a try in the afternoon, now it's time to eat (i live in france) http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Juste before i try these drivers, which improvments do they contain ? fixed temp bug ?improved performance ?

Sinclair07_fr
03-11-2005, 04:39 AM
Hummmmm. Were you not talking about the 71.25, instead of 71.20 ?

JG27_Arklight
03-11-2005, 04:45 AM
I was referring to the 71.20 drivers (at least that's what I remember...could be wrong though). They supposedly have good performance and no temp. bug.

Worth a try I would imagine since it is pretty easy to uninstall and put your older drivers back in.
