An amazing collection of photos, thank you for posting those.

And yes - they look like just a regular group of guys. I wish we could have a history behind the faces.

You can see the similarities among all pilots, aviators just like the bond among mariners, even those at war with each other.

Wonderful pics. My first thought was it's nice to see IJA pics for a change as I've seen lots of IJN pilot and aircraft pics, both land and sea based.

Fascinating training tactic. The third photo and one about 3/4 way down seem to be similar. Sighting with a gunsight at a model, probably to gauge proper attacking angle and range.

Love the smiling pilots too.

Thanks Waldo!

Not to be confrontational or anything, but I think you just did.

And I think you should be allowed to, and I am glad you did, and wish you felt able to speak your mind as fully as you wished to.

Lastly, I think it is sad that anyone feels censored like this, but I also understand the thinking and motivation behind those who have regulated the forum.

What did you expect? I don't understand this fascination with people that the Japanese actually look human or have emotions or feelings.

That said, it didn't have to be said. But remember, no matter how much we respect our enemy, they were after all our enemies and for that alone they died.

There is no other reason but to say 'Pearl Harbor' and proceed with the butt kickings. 'These' guys were the enemy. They made themselves such. Don't forget that either, while on our tour of humanity.

Awesome stuff.I love these kind of "impersonal" pics. They give a pretty good glimpse of the the day to day life of the average IJA pilot.Sweet find http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

You know, I always find it kind of interesting the way people always say things like 'Wow they look just like your average guy' or 'They seem so human and normal' and things like that. I bet if you went to any squadron from either side you'd find most of them would your everyday, ordinary, average Joe, but wearing a flight suit and stuck in very hard times. Of course, they were probably not like everyday people up in the air, but I imagine off the flight lines they would be just like any group of proud, rowdy guys.

Just my thoughts anyways.

I know, but there are many people of no great intellect who like to imagine the entirety of the Japanese nation, both young and old, squatting in the dark sharpening their fangs and perpetually thinking, "Gosh, now how can I commit more atrocities today?"

When evidence is there to the contrary, it usually is a good idea to emphasise it.

Those people are lost causes. You can't change their minds, because they are stuck in a comfortable place they will never move from.

Trying to do so is irrelevent. It's just as irrelevent as demonizing those who did the opposite. These kind of people I find as simply at a different level of stupid.

I don't think that most of the guys in these photographs had much control over whose enemy they were.

Generally speaking the guys who make wars happen do so safe in the knowledge that they won't find themselves directly involved in the unpleasant business of actually fighting them. They speak in front of flags. It is below their pay grade to come home in them.

Were this not the case then I suspect that wars wouldn't happen quite so often...

This hasn't been the case for a hundred years. The nature of warfare was much different during the 19th century and earlier, whereas the changes in the 20th century have led to those causing the war being tried and executed to the greater degree.

This is a good change since, as you say, those who cause it were untouchables while the guys in the trenches paid the price.

Nevertheless, the guy trying to kill you IS the enemy. I don't care whether they want to or not. The reality is it's kill or be killed.

If a guy draws a knife on me, he better stand by. I won't be analyzing his childhood or who put him up to it.

And I think you'll find this type of thinking prevalent among that generation of those that took part in WWII.
