Semantics... if you are not a native English speaker you may not pick up on that "I would like" is seen as more polite.

Although this may extend to other languages too.. I know that my french teacher told me that "Donnez Moi..." or "Give me.." was not a rude way of asking for something, and it could be used in a shop for example.
