Not that I use the autopilot much in combat but... playing the original IL-2 and using the autopilot on the way to the combat area, padlocking friends the autopilot would point towards them! I thought we could not influence autopilot's behaviour! I suspect that it would do the same padlocking enemies, and maybe ground targets?
Did you guys know about this? Was I the only one not aware of it, for 41 long months?
Off to try it in Pacific Fighter now, or has this been changed?

Not quite sure what you mean. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

Simply that the autopilot flies the plane toward the friendly plane (have yet to try enemies or ground units) I choose to padlock.

I have been all this time under the impression that autopilot would either follow the flight leader, or the waypoints' path (if flight leader itself), or engage enemy units like AI does.

I now discovered that it can follow any friendly plane of my choice if I padlock the choosen plane, and my guess is it would also engage the enemy unit I choose to padlock, so being it to my discretion.

Maybe you all knew it before, but I only found it out now. Probably because I hardly use autopilot if not to get quick (4x, 8x) and easy to the battle area.

So...if I select my wingman we'll fly around in circles? Interesting discovery, I must give it a go. Another one if you haven't already tried it, fly against AI kates on the Coral Sea map, they come after you like fighters. Fly against AI Kates on other maps, they ignore you and drone on like the usual sitting duck bombers.

I further checked this, and it is not so simple.

Talking about IL-2 here. It means that it is probably but not certainly applyable to FB/PF.

For what I have seen, it only works in campaign missions when my aircraft is not the leader (no single missions nor QMB then), and apparently the focus towards the plane I'm padlocking on lasts only a little while* before the usual path/focus is re-established. Also, it seems not to work with enemies and ground units, it actually seems not to work in presence of enemy activity at all.

To sum it up, I took 41 whole months to make a totally irrilevant discovery! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

EDIT *: It lasts until the "target aircraft" gets within a couple hundreds meters range (to simulate visual identification I guess), then the usual behaviour (following the leader) is re-established.

IIRC, AI bombers of any sort behave like fighters on any map if they're assigned flying aircraft as a target.

This padlock thing. What does it do? I found it had assign a key and key-combo (f4 and shift-f4) Nothing happend (in QMB) pressing the keys.

So, 2 1/2 year and I still havent found half of the keys for the game http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
