Eh, they dumped one huey? Woudn't it had been easier to just take off with the helicopter and land after the plane had landed?
Just wondering. Great story btw.

Well with the carrier flying into the wind your relative speed would be pretty low I guess http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Those were EX-US Helicopters flown aboard those carriers by South VietNamese pilots. The condition of those things was "iffy" at best. It was easier to dump them than to risk more lives flying one off and back onto the boat.

BTW during that series of escapes to US carriers, there were tons of old Huey's dumped and or ditched in the South China Sea to make room for more to land. It wasn't a pretty time in history.

It kind of reminds me of the old Amiga game, The lost patrol. Darn it was difficult! Anyone made it to the end?

That exact plane is in the Smithsonian somewhere.
The pilot must have had HUGE cast iron ones to try that.

i dont think it would be particularly difficult to land a cessna on a carrier - even without a tailhook. Its very light, has a low stall speed and the moving carrier helps.

Hell in this game you can even land an F4U on a carrier without using the tailhook - ive never managed when it was standing still though.
Its bloody hard too!

At the fall of Saigon there were so many people in choppers escaping the city then landing on the carrier that for each one to land the previous had to be pushed off for space.
But hey, not a bad effort to get that down on deck.
