And from what I remember as a kid it was pretty well too difficult for me to understand. I however once remember setting the realism low and traveling directly into Tokyo. That was about the naval equivalent to throwing a base ball at a bee hive.

I may have got the name mixed up, but my first game might have been Sub Battle of something and it was DOS and I had the choice of being American or German. It had just a shadow of your sub and the top of the surface and a ship might go past you. the destroyers will go back and forth above you. It was kind of complicated. but it had an awesome tactic I used.. once a ship was about to go above me, I would lay Mines and the destroyer would run over the mines above me and get destroyed.

I thought that the first game of this series was 'Silent Service' where you play as an American sub commander in the Pacific during WWII.

Silent Service was an old 80's game for the Commodore 64

And it took up way too much of my free time back then.... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Then along came silent service II and I totally forgot what sunshine looked like for quite a while.

I managed to find some SH1 pictures here (http://www.playit.pl/index.asp?prod=10129&idx_row=9&idx_col=0&b_prem=1).

And these are some pictures of Silent Service (ZX Spectrum version!)

I was surprised to find SH1 anywhere online - it must be older than the web itself! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

(actually it was launched in 1996)

Here's some more screens (http://uk.gamespot.com/pc/sim/silenthunter/screenindex.html) and... a DEMO! (http://uk.gamespot.com/pc/sim/silenthunter/downloads.html) http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I think you'll need a DOS emulator to run the demo. Someone referred to one in another thread. What was it?

I have Silent Hunter I on my shelf. I have run it under Windows 95 and 98 without any problem, but when I did go to Windows XP it did not run any more.

You can find a lot of information on <http://www.subsowespac.org/index.shtml>

I remember silent hunter and bought it on the strength of aces of the deep (great game, shame about the cheesy german accents). But I was disappointed in the way that when you torpedoed a ship that was head on to you it would kind of jump through 90 degrees so that you got a side on view of it sinking, so unrealistic.

Silent Hunter 2 was the same as I remember it.

I much prefer SHIII although AOD is probably still the sub game that I remember with the most fondness.

Thanks
Rugbyfan

Wilhelm, if you want to date me further, I can tell that before SHI I did play Aces of the Deep, and before that I did play the old DOS-game Gato together with my oldest daughter. She has now a masters degree in computer science from Link√¬∂pings Technical University here in Sweden, so she has gone deep into the computer world.

Ah! that ~20 block grid map with 5 islands in it. This was your patrol sector commander. You had missions like picking up down pilots, dropping off spies, shooting line drawn ships in CGA colour. 4 Colours was big stuff mannnn, and on a 320x200 screen - geeezzz High Tech business...Those were the days when Larry The Lounge Lizard looked great on a hercules screen..

Ahhh.. Silent Service... I played on my Atari 130XE in the 80's... brilliant stuff. I just kept playing and playing...

I have a copy of Silent Hunter 1 (CD version) right here. It is a DOS game, and it doesn't run too wel in the XP DOS box. Not worth investing much time in with SH2 and 3 on the shelf as well...
