You've never heard of a Zero but you know what a Ki is?

All right, I'll bite.

A Zero is the Mitsubishi A6M, the main fighter of the Imperial Japanese Navy.

A Wildcat is a Grumman F4F, the main fighter of the United States Navy for the first year or two of the war.

Wikipedia is your friend.

New to WWII aviation? Welcome! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Wikipedia is a great place to go for some basic information on these planes. Pug Sutherland's Wildcat is a Wildcat (not a Corsair) or F4F in US Navy designations.

Sakai's Zero was a Zero...thats the name it was given. It is also known as Zeke, Hamp (for a specific version), and Type 0 Carrier fighter amongst other things. The best known designation is A6M.

Sakai's Zero in that battle I believe was a A6M2-21 or a A6M3-33 but I can't remember. In-game we have the A6M2-21 and A6M3-32 (with squared off wingtips) as well as the A6M5 in several versions and the A6M7 which was mostly a dive bomber/kamikaze.

You may want to look up some other warbirds on that site as a starter.

Sakai was flying an A6M2-21 in his famous sortie over Guadalcanal. If I remember rightly the A6M3 didn't have the range to reach there from the main Japanese base at Rabaul.
