View Full Version : Forum migration: a quick reminder and FAQ

XyZspineZyX

In order to proceed with the migration to the new servers, the IL-2 Forums will be brought down today at 15:00 EST (20:00 GMT) for an estimated 48 hours. In the meantime, here's a quick FAQ regarding the new boards:<ul>
<LI>What's the new system?
<LI>The new boards will use Inofopop's UBB.x. You can find more information about UBB.x at Infopop's web site (http://www.infopop.com/products/ubbx/).

<LI>Will all the posts be transferred?
<LI>Unfortunately only threads active in the last 6 months will be transferred.

<LI>Do I need to register again?
<LI>You do not have to register again: your current login and password should still be valid.

<LI> Where can I find the new forums?
<LI>If you try to access the old URL you will be automatically redirected to the new forums. You'll just need to update your bookmarks.

<LI> Anything else?
<LI>We get stickies![/list]
Hope to see you soon on the new system!

thx for the info...

well, the stickies are a good news, it will not stop the bumping, but it will ensure the really important posts are always at top of page...

I like UBB.x /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

A few further notes:

* If you're still using any of the Ubi game forums on the old Lithium software and use the forum "Remember password" option, you'll need to log back in each time you swap from a Lithium board to a UBB.x board or vice versa, as both forums use cookies for that function and both forums reset the other software's cookie.

* Sometimes UBB.x is slow too, but the search function works!!! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

* Once all the forums have been migrated, the "Remember password" issue will disappear.

A further note:

The "Remember password" issue may no longer be an issue. I've just tested it and it no longer seems to require seperate logins.

Tully this is gonna be real nice. It reminds me of Netwings' structure. I clicked on the link for the UBB.x pop-ups and it's much more ordered, more personal too. Gosh it's exciting!

I admin a UBB.x board (small one, nothing like as busy as this), so I'm already up to speed /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif . Like I said above, I like it /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Uhm.... question you left out of the FAQ.

"Will the new forum actually work, unlike this one?"

Sry, bit fed up with the String00ddBB2 errors...

Hi Thunak,

I'd like to just repeat what I posted in the other thread. I'm very disappointed at the prospect of the many useful threads not being archived. Here's what I said...
<hr>
Great news about the migration.

Terrible news about lost posts. They need not be made available for further contributions, but there is valuable information and discussions available that should be archived. I even spent some time last night saving a few important and favorite threads, but there were several on technical subjects that I apparently hadn't bookmarked, and I don't have time to search for them...

Not including old threads in the new forum is fine. All they would do is greatly increase the size of the database and slow things down. But it's really a shame to not archive them. Think of Oleg's interaction with the western community, if not our own discussions. Is the old record really going to just be wiped clean?

Mike

P.S. - A lot of historic old threads have already been thrown out the window.

<hr>
Would you please looking into archiving the old threads?

Mike

Edit: mistyped "Thunak", oops

Hopefully, HTML will be allowed. FYI: normally boards block certain tags like script, so it should be safe. I just don't like those UBB codes, HTML offers a wider range of variation like a 255³ color table, blockquotes, horizontal lines, tables, CSS stylesheets (glowing font for example).

<span style="width:100%; filter:glow[color=#FF1133, strength=8)"> hehe </span>

So there's much more room for custom sigs with HTML. I can live without scripts, but standard HTML tags should work.

Maybe ubi should upload those lithium smileys then /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif . They're c00l /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif . I couldn't make a sig out of HTML on the URU boards, only BBCode. And yes, the smileys will be the part I miss most I think, the defaults I saw were nowhere near as great as these. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif
