View Full Version : Is North Africa ever a possibility?

Something I am puzzled about is the lack of WW2 sims featuring the theatre in North Africa. Given that there was some hefty air battles there in 1942 and considering how good frame rates would be flying over vast expanses of featureless desert, its surprising no software company has taken on this opportunity. I'd love to see Oleg and his creative team do something in the future with this. Aside from North Africa the theatre could include parts of Souther Italy, Malta and Sicilly. Tank busting in the open desert would be a hoot too. Interesting theatre that it was it is rather sad there isn't much out there that features it. A few years ago a large software company that creates sim abandoned there game, "Desert Fighters". God knows why.

Oh well, Khalkin Gol first!

Thanks for the wonderful observations::: Although I would argue desert landscape is ~far~ from featurless and in fact quite exotic for us northerners.

I would think Gol river area was somewhat desert too, kindof. I was reading that there were no trees for the combatants to hide under. And there were the largest air battles since World War 1.

I would love to see HUGE sand dunes in FB....anything but low frame~rate palm trees!

I'd love a north africa as part of a Med theatre map-
tank busting in N-afr; sinking shipping convoys in med; defending Malta; airdrop on Crete... so many possibilities /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

cheers,

Yeah that would be fun. We flew a Nord Afrika campaign in CFS1. Some guys that called themselves the Mushy peas group had all the maps made up the terrain, carriers, planes, etc. I would love to see it with this sim. Or at least make it where people could use the mission builder to make the terrain and maps. Like the add on scenery packs for CFS. Ah we can always hope lol.

yeah, its really strange that there hasnt been a north africa or mediterrainian game, there could be a lot of fun torpedo attacking and dive bombing allied convoys, great big dust clouds give away enemy positions, bombing malta and covering the parachute drop over crete, even aircraft carriers, taranto, lots of ground attack, anybody know what olegs teams next game is?

I like the NA plane sets but the terrain is just so flat and boring, and different maps would look very similiar now if the did a bunch of theater adddons as one release pacific, Med, europe, bob, NA, italy theres something they can sell for $50 and everyone who purchased FB would buy it. Seperate individual addon theaters i think will breakup the small online community even more then it is now.

the scenery wouldnt be that boring, tunisia has hills, theres anti shipping, theres islands like malta and crete no to mention italian highground and olive groves, theres desert with big dunes, image allied heavy bombers going to work in the desert atmosphere with absolutely great big dust explosions, taranto, alexandria, tobruk, malta, anzio and sicily landings, even greece, the merith and gustav lines,

the only games i know of sofar that does anything with the mediterranian theatre are mohaa, panzer commander and screaming demons of europe.hardly no ww2 tank games is weird too,we live in hope i suppose.

well once the game engine is tweaked to run better and the netcode is improved hopefully we will get what we all asked for.

I just really hope they dont go the same engine new game route. Oleg really needs to keep it all in one game as addons so we can choose to play each theater seperately or all together online. Everyone who has fb will be buying these addons if they decide to make them

don't worry Med N-African fans!

The Channel bunkers shown in the Development udate are part of a special map!
Wich could mean it gives us a additional map to FB it doesn't necesarely intend The channel front or D-Day is going to be the new follow up product to FB! don't you think?
Btw How much more boring can you go then a D-day airwar!?
Unless you don't want to meet a enemy a/c and just look at the impresive 'Medal of honour' action going down below looking at the second greatest armada in history.
Or beeing the sole wing men to 'Pips' Priller and hear him sob over the radio beause your "resistance is futile!"

I for one welcome some additional maps because whe are going to get some typical western front Aircraft like the Horten Fliyng wing the clipped wing spit and Tempest. And Ofcourse The 2 Japanese Fighters ask for a 'Special map'too.

But for the Med I devently would prefer a follow-up product, the poll on the most wanted theather to follow up Il2 must have shown that the Med N-Africa is the most popular theater!

i dunno but i reckon one thing we can do without is yet another battle of britain game, rowens battle of britain will probably be the greatest word on that.Maybe there could be a norway, the baltic sea and the battle of the atlantic with anti submarine missions or anti shipping missions, included could be the defence of the french submarine pens etc.

don't forget New zealanders, Canadians, volunteer Americans, Free french, Maltese & Greeks!

And what about the Italians with their German 'support' and Vichy French, their would not have been a Med/ N-African war without them!

Africa map would be great. Tunis, Tobruk, ElAlamain. And a med map would be nice too.As this stuff wasn't really modelled in other sims yet it would even fit as "Forgotten Battles".

Anyone who truly believes desert terain is "boring" and "featureless" hasn't really spent any time in one.

Picture your "average" terrain, covered with trees and grass and whatnot....now strip away all the trees and grass and whatnot, allowing the erosion and wadi's and hills to be exposed.

North Africa is much more than the Sahara, where very little fighting happened.

In fact, you could take most of the FB terrain, paint it brown, and it would be very desert like....

I would like to ask Oleg and team to not forget to add a South African Pilot career option if ever such a theatre becomes available.

Yeah, deserts are interesting, unlike millions of miles of sea with the occasional island, flotilla, or aircraft carrier.

Actually just a few years ago Dynamix did just such a sim, was looking pretty good too, had them Italian planes and all. But it never made it. Not because it was North Africa, but I think it had more to do with they were trying to compete with the likes of Warbirds... that is I think it was a online only kind of game.
