I have now been without a capable computer for almost four months, and my cravings are starting to get serious.

So I implore you, friends, to provide this poor addict with some meta-gaming to fill the void.

In short: Give me your accounts of your finest moments flying either IL2 or FB.

My greatest moment is this:

Once upon a time, in yon olde days of IL2 Sturmovik, I was flying online in an La-5. The server was a pretty standard Dogfight one, with the usual fencings going on.

Some guy was claiming to be the Ace of Aces, loudly boasting that he was "invincible", and was actually -much to the irritation of the other players- somewhat succesful in his dogfights.
At some point, he was tussling with another good pilot, my check on the external wievs showed a prolonged turn fight, with neither really seeming able to get a killing shot on the other.
All the while, this "Ace" seemed to have plenty of time to continue his rantings about being the "greatest" in a dogfight and so on and so on.
I decided to go take a look, and cruised my trusty La-5 to a point above the knife fight. While I noticed the flyer on my team were in quite a spot of bother, I only intended to follow the fight beneath, and maybe learn a few tricks in the process.
And then, as if possessed by a spirit straight from the High Heavens of Gaming Justice, I did a tear-inducingly perfect "bounce" maneouver on the "Ace", cutting off his wing in a high-speed pass.
I'm not a particularly talented pilot, but in this one instance, Tactics, Timing and Tenacity came together in a (for me) very rare symbiosis, and it ranks as one of my few really "golden" moments.
After taking the fast track to the ground, the "Ace" immediately began whining loudly that I was a "coward" and that he was "invincible in 1 on 1" (notice the discreet change), much to the amusement of the other players on the server...
Priceless; just priceless... *Sigh*

Anyways; as I mentioned, I'd love to see some of your accounts on your finest moments in IL2 or FB, be it on- or offline.

Cheers, and check six mates.

The Metallgulen story was hilarious. It reminds me of the many times I have been up against an "ace in ones own mind" type and wonder just what this person looks like sitting at their desk at home/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif Also reminds me of the time I spent hrs playing with what I believed to be some genuis at warcraft online who then turns around and says"gotta go my mommy says I need to go to bed"/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I just laugh off any bad encounter online!!

Yeah, it was great fun - laughed my head off when I viewed the track afterwards. I guess was impressed with our squadron's only Norwegian member HyperX and his luck /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

One time I joined a game and a squad was ganging up on a bunch of newbies. They were all over the base. I managed to take off and get away from the base, I came back and took them all out, including their "ace". Then when they came back for revenge I took them out to sea hot on my tail and burnt their engines out, and took them out except for one who was lucky I ran out of ammo.

"The Force is strong with this one." -What an ace said of RayBanJockey during a fight when he was still a newbie.

Posted this Golden moment before but here it is again:

I had just started using NewView and am just getting used to it. I have forward view with return bound to my joystick 2 button which unknown to me was also bound to weapon 2!

I have also been flying the Hurri for a while now which only has the one weapon and have recently switched planes......

So there I was in HL last night, height 1200m... speed good... scanning the skies looking for bogeys. Bit of a furball going on at 9 o'clock, just need a bit more height then Im over there.

Look forward to check my gauges... BANG....I was under attack, he was close, the bullets were whistling past my nose, tracers everywhere, the plane was taking hits, I could feel it shuddering, throw the stick over, nose down, rudder, dive climb, I tried everything.

Boy this guy is good... he was glued to my six, Can't shake him, check my height/speed, bang he fires again, where is he, can't see him... HELP!!

Needless to say I then spent the next 5 minutes trying to shake off nothing.

It was only when I got the weapon out of ammo message I realised what a big bafoon I had been. I must have looked like a clown flying all over an empty sky firing every now and again, jinking like a scared rabbit.

sheepish grin

well its not really a golden moment, more golden shower :-)
but worth retelling

The best I ever flew in my life in FB was once on HL in a squad room, I was the only one in it that wasn't in there squad, but the teams were almost even, anyway everytime I took off I got over the opponents base or around there and killed around 6 each sortie, and did this till they closed the server.

But thats not my favorite moment, all those involve me getting p*ssed off and going 1 on 1 with someone.

Ex, fighting a guy that was just constantly running off at the mouth about me in the chat because I was Canadian... No it wasn't Merkava this was another guy who i won't name, anyway we have had previous meetings before on UBI but we never saw each other fly before. Anywho, I got mad and said get in the room I just made and fight me so he did.

When we started I began my mad climb to the sky, we both flew the K4 with the exception of him taking the mk 108 gunpods and me not doing so. Thus I climbed faster than him.

When we met I would have significant hieght over him and immideatly call me a cheat, a speed hacker.

Anyway this wasn't the part that made it golden...

What made this fight so good was he didn't know what he was doing at all and dived down everytime and shattered his 109 by going near or over 900. Everytime, I would stay on him and go at such a decent not to shatter my plane and he just became a lawn dart.

Anyway he died around 3 times like this and i was unscathed and so he left the chat and then he started tellin everyone how i sucked and never got a shot on him, however he neglected to say that i didn't need to shoot a bullet to kill him /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif .

So anyway I handed the track around to everyone in the chat and everyone agreed that he was an idoit and I haven't seen him since.... I less off the black list /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif .

These stories were told with V1.0 so with these new patches I quit flying, my choice... plus I just broke my joystick on Saturday in the old IL-2.

Anywho This wasn't my only golden moment but I still like this story a lot, I have better ones but the people I would be writing about would be actually browsing these forums. I don't like getting good people red in the face.

And as for the squad I flew with that one day they browse these forums but... I will admit it was the best I have ever flown.

Right after the 1.1b patch came out, I took my trusty 262 up on a server. As usual, I climbed to a good height and then scanned the sky for enemies. I had noticed that the 262 wasn't climbing as well as it usually does, but I put it off to my being sleepy. Well, I saw this La7 off to my right and immidiately dove for it. After passing it without iring a shot because I couldn't line up properly, I started a loop to get back to the La7. Sudden;ly, I was inverted and chugging along at 50kph, and the La driver comes along a neatly saws my wing off and puts the other engine on fire. Boy, did I curse Oleg then!

My finest moment flying FB was in the single player campaign, I was flying an IL-2 campaign & my mission was to hit this German airfield, the airfield was within 20Km of my airfield & Russian artillery was shelling it & managed to hit the first Bf-109 before it took off, All the other planes were trapped on the runway, I told my group to hit the AAA & i went for the runway, 1st pass launched rockets & 2 109's went BOOM, 2nd pass dropped 2 500kg bombs 1 more 109 gone, 3rd pass i strafed 2 more 109's killed one & damaged the other which was finished off by one of my Mig-3 escorts/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

"An attack against a unit of Flying Fortresses was something like controlled suicide...Sometimes 50, Sometimes 80 machine guns were firing at you... You attempted to close your eyes & continue to fire, Frightened to death, Frightened to death."

I was in a Mig-3 with a 109 hot on my tail. I was doing every non-violent manuever I could to keep his guns off me.

I saw another 109 coming for me obviously a smoke chaser. I kept jinging in standard Mig-3 fashion a little up a little down, some yawing, and rolls. Anything to dodge but not bleed speed while searching for a wingman for help.

I went head on with the on coming 109, and he came straight at me. They both opened fire as I steadied out my sights on the oncoming 109. I only fired a quick burst before I barrel rolled out of the way of the oncoming cannon rounds.

Next thing I knew the message said they had downed each other. Not at the same time like some movie one took a while before he limped into the drink.

I'm not sure if they shot each other or what. I think the one coming head on shot the one chasing slightly below, and behind me. Well at least to get a shot thats where he would have been at the time with my airspeed and climb angle.

I think maybe I damaged the others engine with my laser guns...I mean machine guns before I did my get out of dodge roll.

Every take-off is optional, but every landing is mandatory!

In Il-2 original, online MiG-3U, you can sit on WEP for longer than pretty much any plane.

Started a climb away from one low-and-slow La-5, sat on WEP climbing at about 10 degrees for around 3 or 4 minutes with him in hot pursuit. So hot in fact, he cooked his own engine and caught fire - it was beautiful. I guess he was used to out-climbing everyone!
