I want to upgrade my video card form my old x1600pro to a Nvidia 7600GT or an Ati X1650. I only have around $150 to spend so I can't go all out on this. I just want to get some more fps out of IL-2 46 before SOW:BOB comes out. I have chosen 2 card's, but i don't know which one is better. Please help me choose, i do not want to make the same mistake when i purchased my x1600pro for $230 dollars and it was a ripoff.

Nvidia 7600GT:

Ati X1650 pro:

Please help me choose because i do not want to get ripped off again. Also if u got a better choice around the same price please let me know.

Get the 7900 GS, they can be had for around $150 and will flat out smoke both of those cards, best bang for the buck to be had period.

Here you go, this is a fantastic card here and is $159.99 retail then a $15 mail in rebate.

That video card will not work with my pc. I have an agp8x slot.

You can get an AGp X1950 pro, an AGP 7900 GT or GS, and soon you will be able to get an AGP DX10 8600 GTX

Ok sorry I guess I should have asked if you were on AGP. But here are some better cards, and right around your price range, IMHO I would spend just a little more $ and get a better quality card. WHen you compare the difference in performance versus paying the extra $20-40 it's definately worth it.

7800 GS $189.99 w/$20 rebate

x1950 Pro $184.99 w/$30 rebate

They make 7900GS AGP 8X versions. That of a Radeon X1950Pro would be a great buy. Prices are dropping like rocks right now because new technology is about to hit.

I would go with the 7600GS as well for this price. Best bang for buck for you by far. BFG got one already OCd (slightly) and they are a great company as well.

And of course always buy from newegg when you can IMO. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814143069

I have the 7600GS 512Mb AGP card but have not installed it yet because my 350watt pwr supply isnt enough and it requires a power cord, so I have a 500 watt on order and hope to get it up and running this week, you really need to research before you buy it'd be a pity if you found out you didnt have the power or Processor to run it once you got it http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/compsmash.gif

@FE_pilot
The two cards you listed are hardly an upgrade to a 1600pro (I'm guessing from the spec.'s of those cards, you'll notice very little/if any improvement).

Depending on what 1600pro you have, you may even take a performance hit.

Eagle_361st gave good advice. Save a bit longer and get a real upgrade.

The 1950pro he suggested would be an upgrade.
Core clock 575MHz
Memory Clock 1380MHz(690mhz)
Memory Size 256MB
Memory Interface 256-bit
PixelPipelines 12
Memory Type GDDR3

A decent card (that should go for your price range) has
Core clock 500MHz
Memory Clock 1000MHz(500mhz)
Memory Size 256MB
Memory Interface 256-bit
PixelPipelines 12
Memory Type GDDR3

With the above numbers, more is better.
If you'll notice, the only difference between the 1950pro and say a 1600pro (or an 850pro) is a newer gpu chip with a faster core clock and faster memory. Otherwise their pretty close in comparison.
Might want to check into power requirements.
Good luck.

Also you could download ATI tool.
(WARNING! Overclocking your video card can/may cause damage)
It would allow you to see exactly what these numbers are for your current card.
If your card has a 256bit memory interface, you'd be thowing your money away.

This card's core and mem are slightly up from stock speeds. Performance should fall somewhere between the 7800GT and the 7800GTX.

Note the important role that the memory interface plays. A high memeory transfer rate is the key to performance.
Steve_V put this link in a thread some time ago. I refer to it often.

Don't buy into the watt myth. It's 12-volt amps that matter not the total amount of watts. 26 total amps on the 12-volt rail for your entire system should be enough. My Enermax 350 watt power supply is powering a P4 2.4C @ 3.2, 2x512mb of ram, 1 6800gt, 1 hard drive, and 2 optical drives and has been doing so for several years now.

I've another P4 that's a 3.8 and I recently had to purchase another video card. After nearly three years of service, both of my 6800GTs, 2.4C and 3.8 both had 6800GTs, died in the same weekend. I had a spare 6600GT and a spare 5200 Ultra, but the FX 5200 Ultra isn't of much use today. I had to run out and pay too much for a 7800GS. With the addition of the 7800GS, BFG O/C model, I could only add some extra filtering. Even after I over clocked the 7800GS to 500/1500, a significant over clock, I saw marginal performance increases over the 6800GT. Sure I can run some extra eye candy and filtering, but it's not leaps and bounds more. While I'm disappointed with the latest performance of top end AGP cards, it's nowhere near the disappointment had I purchased it as an upgrade in search of more performance.

One thing that I've learned about gaming computers, upgrades are quite silly! To extract good performance, a new system must be built every two years. I've thrown money at three aging systems over the years. In each case, I saw little performance increase. My worst-case scenario was that with all my upgrades, I could have built a new one...

When I bought my compaq off the shelf at Staples I upgraded it and got significant improvement.
Added new video card, X2 CPU, ram, case, powersupply, fan, new hard drive, swapped DVD, new x-fi soundboard ETC

Can anyone suggest a good 939 mb.

By-golly!! I practically bought a new system.

DONT GET ANYTHING LESS THAN A 256 BIT CARD WITH A CORE CLOCK OF GREATER THAN 500 MHZ.

I disagree with above statement, for the most part. It's all about patience and research. I have done many very worthwhile upgrades over the years. But, I have also done a few "new builds" over the years also.

In this case, nobody has even asked what is in the rest of his system. How can you recommend a new video card to someone if you don't know what the rest of his system is?

Fe_Pilot, what is the rest of your system?

[QUOTE]O How can you recommend a new video card to someone if you don't know what the rest of his system is?

Thats why we are recommending cards that wont be very obsolete in 2 years although anything but DX10 most likely will be.

I agree. Who knows if he has a VERY WEAK cpu or not that is BOTTLE NECK.

Instead of buying a new card i have decided to over clock my video card from the stock 400/500 settings to my new 490/589 settings. I noticed a 10fps increase in perfect mode. The great thing was that it only required one pci fan to keep it cool. Now it runs at max load around 57c, before it would run around 50c.

I am worried that this might cause system instability. Can someone please look at my dxdiag and tell me if there is a problem.

From past reading, I'm "guessing" A64 2.0GHz and a Gig of RAM.

Edit: I stand corrected.
AMD Athlon(tm) XP 3200+, MMX, 3DNow, ~2.1GHz

If its running cool, no artifacts, or graphics corruption....Rock on.
Thats only 10 bucks a frame if it blows...hopefully, it wont take anything else (mainboard/ram/cpu) with it.

Your were ready to buy a new card anyway right?

From the looks of that latest diag, your chipset driver needs to be re-installed.

Name: VIA CPU to AGP Controller
Device ID: PCI\VEN_1106&DEV_B198&SUBSYS_00000000&REV_00\3&61AAA01&0&08
Driver: n/a

Will it loop the Black Death track?

Will it run 3dmark06?

It'd be a good idea to alt tab out of these apps often, checking temp's.

When your sure nothing is running hot, let the apps run completely a few times, see if they are stable.

Well a little more testing revealed that the card is running without any problems. I purchased a new 450watt psu and with a little more modification we got the card to run 546/724 which increased the temperature from 57c to around 64c max load. The card at normal settings ran the black death track at

Min: 12 Max: 69 Avg: 32

With the new settings it almost gave me a double in fps.

min:25 Max: 148 Avg: 46

I was running the game under these settings:

800 by 600 32bit
Perfect settings(Except Terrain)
AA 4x, AF 8x.

The video card was not stable at those speeds so I went back to stock settings.

Right now I am waiting to get some more $$$ to get maybe a new 7800 or a 7900 agp8x.
