Hi all,

I've got a Pentium 4 2.8 GHz, 1 Gig RAM and a Radeon 9800 Pro 256MB card.

Now that nVidea have cut their prices and Storm Of War looks like being a year away, I figure it would be a good idea to buy a filler card.

ATi or nVidea - it doesn't matter. What do you recommend I get?

Thx!

PS I'm looking for value for money since I'll be buying a completely new system sor SOW.

X800xtPE or nVidia equivalent...is it the 6800gt?...you will be impressed with either, its just what price you can afford really.

I'd suggest to decide on a price, then research benchmarks for cards in that range.

People will just suggest what they like based on their own biases and past experiences, which doesn't help you one bit.

Okay, let's say $200.

If possible, I'd like to keep it and use in a dual-card system in my SOW rig.

6800GT. but notice its power consumption.

If you have a agp slot the best you can put in it is a 7900gs (or is it 7800gs) From ati, if you can find it a x850xt, but ati is also coming with a agp card soon.

If it is for Bob, wait for BoB, then change to a newer motherboard, cpu gpu etc.

For $200 the best card IMO would be the nv6800 series. It has more pipes, higher clock speed and would certainly put the oweness on your CPU. They're fairly cheap now and would show considerable image quality and speed gains over your current VC.

A couple examples:

Any AGP card.

Preferably a 6800GS/GT (same card really)

Or a X800 of some kind.

I think the 6800 is a bit faster than the lower end X800's, but there are many different kinds, some being a lot faster than the 'vanilla' X800's.

Do some research for example :

I just picked up a 5900 Ultra for 40 which I keep banging on about, but looking at those charts, you have to agreee is a sweet deal http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

Thx for the info and links!

One qn: If I get a multi-graphics-card rig next year, will an nVidia 6800GT plug into it okay as a second card?

Sry if that a doofus qn. This is not an area I kniow much about.

Cheers!

Your new rig will be PCI Express, so no.

Just sell the 6800, you will most likely get a good price because many people will want good AGP cards next year, and you wont be able to buy them new.

Well, for 40 quid, I guess it is ok, but only if you play with No AA or Aniso. The 5900 doesnt even make the chart when you crank up the eye candy as shown on the next page of the link above. I wouldnt even play this game without AA or aniso.

I would go for the X850xt or the 6800GT. Those 2 cards are very close with the 850 taking the lead when more eye candy and resolution are added.

Good Luck!

Okay, so the qn I have is: Why not buy a PCI Express card now and use as my 'second' card next year? Is the asnswer that my current rig isn't PCI Express compatable (given that I'm running a 9800)? Does PCI Express require a special motherboard?

Thx!

Yes, PCI-e requires a new Mobo.

Yeah mate, both very good cars, but I am a cheapskate and they both cost around 120-150.

Mine was only 40, and I dont mind playing without AA or AF so its cool for me http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Hard to find another card which is as fast for that price.

I may get a 6800 or X800 when they come down to around 50 http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif My favourite hobby is seeing how cheaply I can put good PCs togther.
