I know that probably many of you already know this, but the frontal attacks can be truly devastating.
That's exactly the problem.
I have been shot down hundreds of times in this kind of attacks.
Where the true battle, where the superiority of a pilot and his aircraft should be decisive, if an an ace flying an ...Yak9U(e.g.) is shot down by a rookie flying an I-16???
This is my firs post, so pls be gentle...

Avoid getting into frontal attacks (especially against heavily armed planes), unless that's your only option. An head on is too much of a gamble to be worth it. Not to mention that if you get hit, it will probably be the most vulnerable parts that bear the brunt of the damage. That is, the pilot (you) and the engine.

Moral of the story is, don't get drawn ino an head on attack.

I love head-on passes. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
Challenges are great. Taking out a couple Yaks while flying a P-39 is nice, but whether you do it by staying on their six or aiming well in a head-on doesn't matter. I think they're both valid of skill.

Of course, if you can hit something with that big-*** howitzer in the P39 an head on pass is a somewhat more attractive proposition /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

If you practice and learn to fly an unstable plane then that instability could be your best ally. Try changing cannon convergence to 100-150m it may help your accuracy.

That's what some people seem to be missing. It's not always a bad idea or foolish. Head-on passes may be a strength for many planes and it would be "foolish" not to take the advantages your plane offers. If you just took off in a FW-190 A8 with MK-103s and a Yak that has a big E advantage wants to head-on with you, wouldn't you take him up on that offer? The P-39 has the head-on advantage over a lot of aircraft.

Damn straight! It's not easy, but if you connect with a 37mm on the enemy's nose or wing root, it can be devastating.

if you dont want people making head on passes just fly higher... and dont come down till your on someone elses 6 not while thier comming up to meet you...

i hate them too even though i usually win...

but its much more fun to out fly someone than to throw the dice.

i start out by no leaving base till i have atleast 2000 meters.

unless someone is in trouble.

Same thing happened to Chuck Yaeger, some n00b in a FW190 got him HO hehe.

Actually, maybe it wasn't a n00b, not sure if it is even known who got the credit.

I fly FW190 all the time and it never ceases to amaze me how willing people are to HO with me, even in planes like a Hurricane IIb.

I personnally don't like Head ons unless I think its my only hope for survival. If I was good at them though I would like Head ons, there are people that go head on and know when to shoot, for a split second then break and actually hit there target, I am not one of those, I just climb away till they stall and then come back down.

In HO attacks I try to come from below and to one side. Takes a little defection, but you are alot safer doing it this way.

If you really want some HO fun online - set your convergence to 1000 meters & use the gunsight view (full zoom) in an FW. You´ll need a steady hand & a stick of good quality though.

Von Zero,

I suggest

1- opening up with a couple of rounds at long range (800m or 0.80 in icon) just to psych the ennemy and maybe (just maybe) hit him,

2- once I get to .70 and less I start a barrel roll to throw off the ennemy's aim (I don't try to shoot at this point),

3- immediately after convergence I stop the rotation (no matter if upside down or "sideways") and pull on the stick to go back towards enemy...
depending on foe and situation this may get you

A- into another head-on (repeat procedure 1-3) or
B- in a position to get on the enemy's 6.

That's what I usually do-

Cheers /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif , CG
