Hello all,
I've been browsing the forum for some time now, and have come up with a question for you.
The game has received high praise for its character animation count, which I think is great, though I am curious: what does the term "contextual animation" describe, in relation to this game?

I searched the forums for a double post but was unsuccessful searching with keywords: character animation, contextual animation.

Thank you very much in advance for any info you can provide! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I don't truly know, but I think that it means how the all of the characters don't look the ame and they are all different or there are mahy different models. I think that the characters ae randomized if they are not specific characters.

I would have to say just go to Wikipedia or Google it. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/typing.gif

Thanks very much ! I will see what I can find, and assuming someone else doesn't, I will post if I find anything discerning!

Contextual animation is when the game chooses the best animation in a situation, either by using one from a huge selection of animations or using an animation generator using "handles", or things that the character can interact with (Splinter Cell 4 is using the handles approach while AC is using 10 thousand animations). For instance, if Altair was holding onto a window sill, and wanted to climb over to another one on the same wall, if he only had one animation to do that, the animation would have to be cut off or sped up/down if the windows were futher apart or closer together than the windows used in that single animation. With contextual animation, the game can figure out what animation to use in different situations to make the game look as natural as possible http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

(Splinter Cell 4 is using the handles approach while AC is using 10 thousand animations) Shame on you! Go watch the X06 demo. Jade says that the climbing animations are dynamically (how do you spell that word :S) created to make it look very realistic. And I would be surprised if they would only use it for that.

If they're created dynamically, what is the purpose of having 10,000 animations? I wiped my HDD and can't be bothered to find the video again, but the meaning the OP was looking for is still there.

SC:CV is the only game to have combined handles with dynamic animations to date.

Do they have 10,000 animations? Shame on me (I like to say that http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif )...
Well, that's probably walking&attacking ect. The climbing is dynamic, I'm sure.

Nah none of it is dynamic I think.

AC is using a mix of canned animations (pre-generated) as well as dynamic (generated "on-the-fly"). In terms of climbing, and all other acrobatic feats, from what I understand, they will be using dynamic animations.

For fighting, assassinations, and the like, it seems to me like they will be using canned animations, but since there are so many of them, the decision of which one to use is dynamic (meaning that a different animation will play even though it's canned, depending on whether you get hit in the leg, or in the arm).

That's as far as I understand it anyway...feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
