When I was growing up in Texas, there was an old lady that shot a man who was slinking up and stealing the Social Security checks from people's mailboxes located on the side of the road.

Sometimes these mailboxes were a good distance from the road, and it took a couple of minutes to get to it from the house. After a couple of thefts, this old lady who stood under 5' tall and under a 100lbs., waited out in the brush next to the road and staked out with a 20 gauge.

Sooner or later, the thief came along and got shot while sorting through her mail. He managed to make off and later showed up at a local hospital to get some help.

I remember that my father, brothers and I all went to her house to check on her afterwards. She said that we had nothing to worry about because she could take care of herself fine. She then showed us her stash of firearms that belonged to her deceased husband, and began to demonstrate how efficent she was at loading and handling them. She had such a serious look of resolve on her face when she leveled that pistol at the wall when she was demonstrating what she could do. I do recall that I would hear her practicing out in the back of her property every once in a while, but never thought much about it.

Years later, I saw the movie "Hidalgo". I saw the look that the actress who portrayed Annie Oakley had on her face when using her pistol, and immediately thought of the neighbor lady who was more than willing to take care of herself. She is the type of person who I would call a hero! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

It occurred to me that it is probably more common for women than men to carry firearms in the Southern states. I know that my mother and most ladies of her generation own a short-barreled revolver of some sort. She carries it with her whenever she goes on a trip that requires her to drive long distances at night. It has served her well.

I can see that becoming a catch phrase around here. 'What is the best part of the plane to shoot at?'

I know she hit the frame around the cutout. But does anyone think she hit the figure in the cutout? He would have crapped his pants that's for sure.

Some of those rounds went way way high, over the backstop if there even is one.

Wonder where they landed.

These rounds came out the wrong end of the barrel. IMHO.

Didn't check out the link. But I would sincerely hope it was the same piece of film shown a couple of years ago. Just about the same time as the "Bowling for Columbine" film. was released.

Err... How is it folks get shot again?

I wonder, what compelled you to make the above statement?

Got to say the only toodles in danger there are on passing airplane pilots.

I target shoot a lot, used to target shoot with cadets, If we ever fired that high or anywhere but at a target where we knew the rounds would not go anywhere we'd have been booted out.

Don't mess with Texas! She was obviously a descendent of a member of one of the German-Texan regiments in the Civil War.
