No funnies, just production aircraft. What is your opinion?

Well the obvious choice is the FW190...

Well, easy answer is:

All Energy Fighters

but I'll elaborate

Fw-190A(late Typ), D9
P-51(all marks incl. Mustang Mk.III)

For me these ones:

FW 190 Dora/A-9

P-51 Mustang

Macchi 205 Veltro

A6M5C

Stiletto-

For their respective timeframes, I would put in:

P-39

Mig-3

And..

190 for sure, it has the minimum required time on target.

Tempest also if you're below 3 km.

Agreed...the P-38 is pretty dangerous to master and also quite dangerous when properly handled. Most of all the P-38 is often the unexpected fighter to the battle...it doesn't get the respect its deserved till it cuts another fighter out of the sky http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

There are no aircraft in IL2 that are dangerous to master. They are all easy to fly. And all are deadly if you're a good marksman. That's my experience.

Me-262.
Dangerous to master between the engines and ability to hit critical Mach.
Deadly as they come.
Produced serially even if not in great numbers.

It doesn't do as well as it should online because being a twin its worth twice the points and hence tends to get swamped by points *****s.

I'd also say the Fw 190-A. The P-38 is just not as deadly as the 190 when mastered, better for survival but not for killing. Same goes for the P-51.

True but you kind of squished the juice out of an interesting topic mate. I think you know as well of the rest of us what was intended.

I would add the I-16 type 24 to this list, she's a hyper-sensitive little bugger but when you can make her dance she doesn't stop before the tango's over.

Thank for the replys. Is there a good thread or article for learning the ropes in the P38? or 47? I have just really jumped from plane to plane over the years and would like to hone my skills in one aircraft.

190 is interesting but I just hate the limited view from the cockpit-which I guess is one of the reasons why it is diffcult to master.

There was a long thread here a few weeks ago I think started by AllorNothing where he asked for tips for flying the P-38 and a ton of people responded...I tried looking for it but it's probably buried several pages back. I'd really suggest reading it, hopefully you or someone here can find it.

The P-38 is definitely very tricky, it's very slow to maneuver so you have to be really good at precision deflection shots. It has a good top speed though so it's good for buzzing Japanese fighters which tend to be very slow. Offline the P-38 ally AI is TERRIBLE so one of your biggest frustrations might be that your wingmen never cover you, never attack the enemy, and just fly around in circles getting shot down.

As for the Fw-190, I find it pretty easy to fly. It can't last more than a few seconds in a turn battle because it's so slow to pull up, but its top speed is high and its armament is so poweful that generally you only need to fire a short burst to down an enemy fighter.

here is the P-38 thread I was thinking of, lots of good advice.

P39 hands down

The P39 series is one of the hardest aircraft to master in this sim. I've lost count of the number I've flat spinned to death in. I don't think too many people new to the Fw190's spin out their aircraft at 2500m and are still spinning when they hit the deck do you?

Once mastered however even the P400 and D1's are deadly. They turn as well as most 109's are respectably fast and well armed. They also have good visability from the cockpit (except Q onwards).

The most criticle aspect that makes them deadly? They are underestimated by almost all axis pilots. I love to sucker those experianced Fw190 B&Zers into turn fights after the 2nd or 3rd B&Z fails http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif Once they are in the turn fight with you, you can see them waiting for you to push too hard and pick up the flat spinning scraps. If the P39 is well flown however it will be the Fw190 that spins out of the fight and become easy meat for 37mm goodness http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Go on enjoy your easy (meat) Fw190's

P-39 is underestimated indeed... I like it a lot.
Maybe many folks can't land it properly and crash still after combat http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/10.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Yes- the P-39 for me anyway. Spinmiester to Spankmiester in one easy lesson... paraphrased from another great aviation quote http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif That cannon, once it finds its mark is truly devastating http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

I've had a great deal of fun in that kite, despite teething pains http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/sadeyes.gif

yeah, I like flying & landing that bird too, once used to it it's a delight to make a safe landing in this birdie...

I must admit a few years back i underestimated the P39 alot but i flew it for a few days and ever since then i am well aware when one is on my six or even near me.

It's also very easy to land http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

In the end you realize... all that is needed is fast aircraft & mean guns, in that order.
All that is needed FTW.

I like the P-39 too, once I learned to avoid the spin I found it to be tight turning AND fast AND tough, great combination. Still can't get the hang of that low rate of fire, low velocity cannon though, that's why my favorite P-39 is the D-2 with two smaller cannons in the nose instead of the one big one.
