Sorry, I got bored. I started the P-38 J-L. Im sure this will tick off a few people at IL2 Center who really wanted to do it, but I think the chances of it getting completed are better with me. This is 1 nights work.

Sweet /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

One of my favorite planes to fly.

I think I read that someone had a complete, or near complete cockpit as well.

Don't know how long Oleg will continue to put 3rd party planes in the game, but this would certainly be a nice one to add to the stable.

Thanks for your work.

As we all know, the Soviet Union had too many fighter pilots during WW2. So Stalin's scientists came up with a brillient way to solve this problem. They would make some of their pilots fly British made Hurricanes. The Hurricane was an uber flying coffin. It was designed to maximize pilot kills by providing nothing but fabric and a few wooden spars around the cockpit. This setup prevented the pilot from escaping easily while at the same time not interfering with enemy bullets and shrapnel trying to pass through it. The rest of the Hurricanes structure was designed to ricochet bullets and shrapnel into the cockpit. And thanks to the cockpits superb design, all of them would pass through the cockpit and the pilot inside with little difficulty. Of course the Hurricane's designers didn't stop there. In order for the Hurricane to become a flying coffin, they had to make it easy to shoot. They did this by making the Hurricane the slowest monoplane fighter in use at the time and even gave it a very bulky shape so that it would be easy to spot and hit. The final feature of the Hurricane was its ability to bury or cremate itself. And because it was made of biodegradable materials, the Hurricane was environmentally friendly after it buried itself. Because of these brillient features, the Hurricane was a perfect flying coffin and helped the Soviets solve the pilot surplus they were suffering.

To GiB:
good work, looking forward to bring them down with my 190^^
it's an addition that makes sense.

But: do not expect to much superiority from this plane, it's like every Twin-engined Fighter not good in rollrate, it is quite fast in level flight, climbrate & firepower was alsow good.
but i won't try to outclimb a 109 or 190.
In fact the P38 is a verry good target (it's, like 110, quite big) so you may get a hit from a long range shot of an 190, the P38 is everything but no tank! some hits of the 20mm rounds can cause lots of damage so stay fast and you'll surive.> fly B&Z

BTW: wont start a discussion about this, just remind that were will be no plane in IL-2FB that is superror to all the others, every fighter can make trubble when it's flown well.
If not you can shot down every fighter.

so far, my O

Lol. Do some research. The P-38 L will outclass the 190 in almost every way, INCLUDING ROLL RATE (high speed). It will also be able to out turn a Me-109, and give the Yak-3 a run for its money. As for climb, I dont know the numbers, but I think it will catch a 190, but the latter 109's will out climb it. P-38 will have them both in zoom climb.

One other note. Reading story's from P-38 pilots, with its gun config it was easy to score kills 1000M away. Yes, that is correct. 1000M away. Also, dont try to dive away from it. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif I really think it will be a kick a$$ bird online!!! No stalls on high speed manuvers down to 145MPH, FAST accelleration, bomb load that would make a P-47 envious (2x 1000lb bombs, 10 rockets), the firepower to saw a 190 in half, and the manuverability to give a Yak a run for its money down low. Tell me, what aircraft can do better?

Would be great to have a twin-engined fighter. I'm looking forward to flying the Me 110 too.

Hope "Lost Soul" can work together with you or doesn't mind stepping down...

Gibbage, as usual, the speed of your work is exceeded only by its quality. Very impressive stuff. Please remain bored as long as possible.

Leadspitter, please don't get discouraged. I (along with most of the rest of us) know d*ck about computer modeling, and rely on folks like you and Gibb to keep our habit supplied. There are boatloads of aircraft begging to be modeled, and we want all of them we can talk you guys into making. It might not exactly be theater appropriate, but to preserve as much of your work as possible, might I suggest a P-38F? It would give us something appropriate to chase A6M2's with.

Blacksheep, the late model P-38's (with hydraulic aileron assist) had a surprisingly good roll rate (I don't have figures handy. SkyChimp, any help?), although it took some time to ramp up to this roll rate. Through the first few degrees of roll, the ailerons had to fight the interia of the wing mounted engines. There is no avoiding pesky Newtonian physics.

P-38 fun fact: 500 rds per .50. That's 33 seconds of firing time. The P-47 has 17.8 by comparison.

Fun fact #2, early P-38's had 6! .50 cals in the nose with 400 rounds each with the 20MM at 150. Also, there were a few produced with the 37MM at 15 rounds and 4 .50 cals at 500 rounds. Can anyone say PAIN?!?!?! Lol. To bad those were all EARLY P-38's and had a lot of problems.

Yes it was. It was resurved by Luthier. Then months ago Luthier gave it to someone. We saw 1 screen shot that looked like it was from the CFS2 tutorial and nothing. Then two more modelers started fighting over it (Lead_Spitter and 1 other) this week. I want the P-38, and I want to make sure it gets in the game and is done good. A lot of projects are claimed but will never be done. Like the B-25, A-26, B-26, and almost every important aircraft in the war. I had to take it to get it done.

Really nice work Gibbage, can't wait to try out some of your other projects already finished.

It sounds like we need some sort of roll-call for the modeling projects. I've watched quite a few projects be claimed, but little evident progress once time goes on. Once we really know what is being worked on, it should allow the dedicated modelers to pick up projects they would like to do, but aren't for fear of treading on toes.

Speaking of lost projects, did Killjoy ever finish the V-1 project?

I think the Hellcat is a much better choice for you. The P-38 is an EXTREAMLY complicated shape to model. It gives ME fits! Lol. 1 problem is someone else is doing the Hellcat. I will try to remember his name, but he sent me it recently to help him on a few points. Ugh. I cant find his name. Im sure he will pop up on the forums soon. How about doing the F8F? It has a simple shape and should be easy to do. Im sure you can make a few friends doing it, and I have already gatherd a lot of referances on it. Interested?

doesnt the late model P-38 have 3,000 horsepower? i would think it could outclimb even a 109K4 !. even though its heavier. also i have heard also that the P-38 lightning could outturn all other american fighters and german fighters too. i have talked to a P-38 pilot who flew the photo recon version in the pacific with no guns. i bumped into him at frys electronics in software section and grilled him to death. i asked him why he would fly a plane in the pacific without guns and he laughed out loud. he told me no plane could ever catch a p38 . none. and even when bounced from a much greater height he could dive and get away without effort. he probably had a biased opinion cuz it was his bird but he was serious in saying that plane couldnt be outfought or caught. hey the guys in his eighties and honest a sort as could be. i think thats a trait of his entire generation. so i believe him.

3 dozen P-38D's were delivered with the 37MM cannon and four .50's. P-38E were standard with six .50 cal and 1 M1 Hispano 20MM. After the E, the standard setup was set for 4 .50 cal and the 20MM.

Remember, only 3 dozen of them were produced. Also, only 15 rounds of the 37MM. Also, the D had a lot of problems. Only the L and J were serious competitors with dive flaps and boosted alarons.

Just wanted to add my 2 cents in, the dive flaps are really an over rated thing IMO.. (And I am a big fan of the 38 in flight sims, it's the only plane I fly).. More of an item of convenience _if_ you have several combat hours under your belt. New sports would auger in when they flew past the limit in their P-38's without dive flaps- the pilots that learned a bit quicker would roll the wings and pull on the stick to bleed speed.. The boosted ailerons definately gave the P-38J's an advantage at +350mph speeds, but below 350mph the same or greater amount of degrees of roll per second could be accomplished by ******ing the inside throttle briefly, then rolling the plane into the engine.

The P-38H was still faster in level flight than most of its contemporary enemy fighters (MTO, mid '43), could still accelerate in a dive faster, climb higher, out zoom climb AND out range them as well as taking a lot of punishment if all of those positive traits failed to give the 38 the upper hand.. Don't forget the INSANE stall speed of just over 70mph in a typical 16-17 thousand pound loadout! Can you say stall fighter?

Anyways, the model looks great, can't wait to fly it in FB and I can only hope they get the flight model more accurate than the other planes I have tried so far. It would be a shame to see another developer fall to the old wartime propaganda that slightly tarnished the P-38's REAL reputation.

hey gib. What charectics do the P38 have? it couldn´t be an uberplane with two motors I think. it has a strong arment but the rollrate with two motors and such a wingspan is much longer then a YAK or ME 109 have!!

The P-38 F had a roll rate better then a FW-190, and with flaps could out turn a Zero. Hows that? Plus it could carry the bomb load of a B-17. It was an amazing aircraft for a twin. The only thing it will be lacking is top speed over some aircraft, and climb over some. But it should be able to out perform anything 1943 or below easy.

where do you have it from??

If the P38 could cary as many bombs as a B17 it must have bombs everywhere. Even on the Tail!!!!
for my one you exaggerate with he P 38 in a grade wich is untenable.

It could carry 4000lb of bombs. The B-17 used a bunch of 250lb bombs. The P-38 could carry 2 1000lb and 4 250lb (with field mod mounts) or two 2000 pound torps. A B-17 COULD carry a MAX of 6000lb, but typically carried 4000lb.

also the accelaration was outstanding faster then the p51d 190 109s up to the p38s top speed then it could be passed theres clips of real flight tests at zenos warbird drive in,

While I don't know about the roll rate thing on the 38F (I suspect that roll rate figure was produced only by ******ing the throttle then rolling into it, because below 350mph the 38 did NOT outroll any factory FW-190) the 38 definately did carry a similar bomb load as most B-17's carried. P-38's were modified to include Norden bomb sights, and had a clear plexiglass nose and extra space in the bottom and forward part of the plane for the bombardier. They were called Droop Snoots and they were highly successful and much less expensive to operate than a B-17 both financially and in terms of crew losses and attrition.

IT was the fastest accellerating US fighter, but I dont think it was better then the late 190 or 109's. Simply because the thrust to weight ratio was not there, and thats the most critical thing to accelleration. Max speed is a combo of those two (Thrust and weight) and aerodynamics.
