Can anyone give me an idea of what commands I can use for my flight to get them to do a better job attacking airfields , esp stationary non AI aircraft on the field. No matter which aircraft I fly it is difficult for me to tell them to be airfield specific when commanded to attack flak or vehicles on or near an airfield & i too often find myself all alone over enemy airfield protected by some of the best flak crews on the continent...

Hi there,

I take it you're talking about making a mission in the FMB where you're leading a flight to attack an airfield rather than doing one of the quick missions.

AI in FB is kind of problematic at making this kind of thing happen.

Certain aircraft that potentially can strafe ground targets, or carry bombs/rockets, will always attack enemy aircraft in preference to attacking ground objects. Even if you've selected one as a specific target for a flight beforehand, quite often they'll drop their bombs as soon as enemy aircraft appear in range. If your flight carries rockets or you want them to strafe, they'll try and execute their ground attack orders assuming that they're still in range of the original target when all enemy aircraft have been dispatched.

The solutions to this can vary depending on what the setup of your mission might be:

Either a) delay the spawn of enemy aircraft until such time as you're likely to have dispatched the enemy aircraft,

b) 'escort' the attacking aircraft with another flight can sometimes improve matters,

c) set the aircraft defending the airbase to attack a different flight of aircraft from your own, or whichever is carrying ATG ordinance,

d) use attack aircraft rather than fighters - Stukas, Su2s, Il-2s, Yak9Ts, Yak9K's, FW190F8s, and all bomber aircraft seem to try to follow their ground attack waypoints in preference to attacking enemy aircraft or defending themselves if targetted.

You'll basically need to troubleshoot the mission at various points to determine what's happening. Some types of aircraft ['attack' aircraft like say, the Su2] will ignore any aircraft that attack them. Others like the Lagg3-IT seem to always absolutely respond to attacks from enemy aircraft regardless of what orders they might happen to have. La5's seem to always drop their bombs as soon as they encounter enemies, but P-47's won't. As mentioned, setting an 'escort' flight for that group, or setting the defenders to intercept a different flight, can change the way the mission unfolds in-game.

If you're commanding the flight you get a lot more options as to what happens in a mission:

There's no particular command to attack static targets, but you can padlock ground targets [default: f5] and then tell a particular wing or your wingman to attack that target.

Plus you get the usual 'attack flak' 'attack tanks' 'attack vehicles' etc commands which you can select from the ground targets menu ['6' after selecting a flight].

If anyone else has any additional info or clarifications on these things it'd be nice if you could chip in, coz I'm curious as to how certain aircraft seem to behave in the FMB as well.

I guess you understand ....& I guess on career missions with a bunch of AI teammates I can't force them down to attack just what I want...unfortunately...so I guess I'm stuck yelling at them ( and having my wife think I'm nuts....) It would be nice to be able at some stage to increase the number of predetermined ground attack commands...tho....
