in the Tempest cockpit, what is the cushion -like thing in the centre under the gunsight. One of the bars it is fixed to obscures the rev counter which is most annoying. The thing looks like a primitive airbag1 ANyone know what it is?

Possibly to stop you smashing your head if you get thrown forward?

Isn't it so that the pilot can put his chin there and line up the gunsight perfectly straight and be a fixed distance from the sight to help with distance-to-target estimates? I think this was more important with iron sights which would change size depending on how far the pilots head was from the gunsights

Probably also to stop you from smashing your nogging against the instrument panel
