Seems to be an ambitious project. Haven't tried it yet, but might be worth a try http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif until SH3 goes to the shelves..
Danger from the deep (aka dangerdeep) is a Free / Open Source World War II german submarine simulation. It is currently available for Linux/i386 and Windows, but since it uses SDL/OpenGL it should be portable to other operating systems or platforms.

I found this "game" on the bbc website regarding hunting u-boats. http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/games/battle_atlantic/index.shtml
You don't really play it though, just use different tactics and see what the computer does. I found it hard, but you guys shouldn't if you played Destroyer Command.

ok tested it out.. seems to run ok, exept couldn't get the sound to work. the game is obviously in its infancy development stage.. but if the programmers invest enough time and commitment on the project, we should see an impressive simulator i think.

well we won't need it if SH3 hurries up.

The only thing really nicely done about Danger from the deep is the water. The game really needs some work on models, physics, interface and needs... uh... sound http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

But good to know someone is working on this kind of project. Keep it up.

well, the development is still at its early stages.. if the freeware programmers do their job without giving up.. the sim might turn out to be an eyecandy and even a rival http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif for example, look at linux and windows.. two different operating systems, two different approaches. the advantage of freeware development or 'open source' is its 'open' to anyone who is willing to help out.. since open source programmers work on the project when they have free time, they are not constrained by deadlines to meet, so in the end, u have a product that has a potential for more detail.. on the other hand, it can take much much longer to create or the programmers could give up the project http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif but if it sticks.. will be interesting to see how the final product will be.

Yeh, nine times our of ten, the devs give up and leave everyone disappointed before release of freeware stuff.

I tried this but for some reason the water is pitch black, I don't see any waves or anything, it's just black. I can't see the boat when im on the bridge either. Only thing outside the boat I can see is the sky, anyone else have this? I have a radeon 9800 pro with the latest catalyst drivers.

the sim doesn't yet have many settings.. but i believe u can change the resolution of the game. try using a different resolution see if that helps.. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif
also, make sure u download the runtime libraries which u'll find at this link http://dangerdeep.sourceforge.net/documentation.php
good luck

ok, the game has finally reached version 0.1.0. lots of changes including the graphics. All it needs is time and this simulation will rival SH3 and maybe even surpass it.

here's some screenshots from version 0.1.0:

Not if they see that people are really interested in their project. These fellows are propably Sub enthusiasts like us.

I am using Linux both at home and at work since 1998 and I've seen a programs develop and be a 'must' and programs simply to fade away due to either bad work or better Open source equivalents.

I've tested it. It looks nice......
Needs a lot of work though and definitely needs support either with information or with coding.

right on.. but its still at version 0.1.0, wait till it hits 0.5 hehe
i've been keeping an eye on this project for a while now, they're a group of dedicated programmers who are also uboat enthusiasts who want to create a realistic uboat simulation and intelligent AI that will include wolf packs and destroyer vs uboat on a network. if all goes as planned, it'll prove to be a formidable contender to commercial versions.

I remember seeing its announcement at Sourceforge.net a few years ago when I was searching for a maritime B/L program . I didn't give much attention at it due to the fact that simply it was mostly a TODO/wishlist and unfortunately Linux & Games are not walking side by side most of the times.
But now you mentioned again, I've seen that their work is really impressive and I believe we do have a potential here.
