Silvered radar echo measurement model of the Vulcan aircraft built and used at the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough, UK. The model is chrome painted with a black stripe on the nose section. Built by A V Roe of Manchester between 1955 and 1964, the Vulcan, then known as the Avro 698, first flew on 30 August 1952. The plane, which only saw service with the Royal Air Force, was an important part of Britain's nuclear deterrent from the 1950s onward. It was phased out during 1984

It was phased out during 1984

... but not before the RAF managed to fly one to the Falklands via Ascension Island in the early days of the eponymous conflict, where it managed to put a stick of 1000lb bombs across the runway at Port Stanley, rendering the airfield useless for landing heavy transport planes. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

The tale is grippingly recounted in Vulcan 607 by Rowland White

It is indeed an early prototype or possibly a series one model as the later ones had a redesigned cranked leading edge http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
