View Full Version : New Server: WarClouds Touch of History

VFS-22_SPaRX
01-10-2007, 12:39 PM
The WarClouds team has started up another server: WarClouds Touch of History.

The server has in rotations maps/missions from all time periods and theaters. The missions/maps are built with Historic Overtones. We do not strive to make the mission completely historic as we have found that it is almost impossible to do. Instead we focused on giving the missions some historical flavor while keeping them fun to play.

Along with the historic overtones, we strived to keep the missions/maps action packed. Flight times are not long. Mission are supposed to be accomplished in 60 minutes with a time limit of 90 minutes. We wanted to make a server that you could join in and be in some action quickly without long flight times. Hopefully we have achieved that.

Sometimes you just do not want to play a particular map. We understand that. There have been many times we have played on servers and a map would come up that most of the players were just not interested in. Therefore, on the TOH server we have enabled a voting feature. By typing "<vote" into the chat, you are voting for the server to switch to the next map in rotation. If 75% or more of the players on the server enter the same "<vote", then the server will switch to the next map.

Server Settings :
Limited Icons for both Friend and Foe, Cockpit ON, Externals OFF, Mini-Map ON, and the rest of the Switch are ON.
Deathkick: 3 pilot deaths will result in a 5 min temp ban. After 5 mins you may rejoin the server.
Game Version is 4.071 and will stay up to date with all new versions.

Stats are up and running for the TOH server as well. The link is active at www.war-clouds.com (http://www.war-clouds.com) . Also if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to post in our forums.

Following is maps/missions that we currently have in rotation. Many Thanks to JG27_Heven_Sent for all the hard work and time he put into creating the missions/maps for the server. I think you all will find that his missions are quite fun and enjoyable.

Tigers Teeth (1942)

Planes: Hurricane IIc, Hawk 81, A20C, P40B vs A6M3, Ki21 Otsu, Ki43 II, Ki61 Ko

The Flying Tigers have arrived and unpacked their gear. They will have the support of the RAAF and RNZAF bombers in their role here. Facing them are the latest and the best that Japan can offer as well as some older types.

China Mustangs (1945)

Planes: A20c+A20G, B25, P38Late, P-40M, P-51B vs Ki-61 Hei, Ki-100, N1K2-Ja

The end is approaching fast, the last die hards are being swept away but there are still locations where the fighting continues. The enemy will not give up and neither should you.

Chindwin River Station (1943)

Planes: Beaufighter, Mosquito, Spitfire Vc (2), Hurricane IIb vs Ki43 II (42), Ki43 II Kai (43), Ki61Ko (42)\nKi61 Otsu

In 1943 the Imperial Japanese Army is still in control of the majority of Burma and is pushing the British and Indian Armies back into India. The air war became as much about destroying supply lines as supplies or troops. However the antiquated Hurricanes that had previously been employed were being replaced with aircraft which possessed more teeth.

Zestorers Wings (1942)

Planes: Bf-110G2, Bf109F2, Ju88A4, Ju87D-3, He111H6 vs Hurricane II Field mod, IL2I, Pe3, Pe3bis

Russian was such a vast battle ground that long range twin engine fighters really could roam the skies causing havoc where they went. Both sides had them. Now you must fight with them.

One day in Galycia (1943)

Planes: Bf109F4, Bf109G2, Fw190A4. He-111H-6, Ju-87 D5 & G1 vs La-5F, P-39D2, Yak-1B, Yak-9D

The Russian counter offensive is in full swing and they are making great advances with their T34's through Occupied territory. The Germans must stop them before they encircle Kiev.

Seelow Heights 1945

Planes: IL2m 43, IL10, Yak9U, P39Q10 vs Fw190A8, Fw190D9 44, Bf109G10

German ground forces have occupied the heights north and south of Seelow. In order for the Russian advance to continue those forces must be swept away.

SnowStorm (1940)

Planes: I-153 M-62, I-16 TYPE18, Pe-2 (1 series), TB-3 4M-34R vs I-153 M62, I-16 TYPE18, Fiat G50, J8A, Mc200 Series 3

The Winter War of 1940 was a harsh and at times brutal battle between the largest and most powerful country in Europe and one of the least well armed. The terrain and the cold conspired to level the playing field but the Finns still had to rely on old or captured equipment. There was supposed to be an inevitable outcome, but history does not always allow the inevitable.

Desert Rats (1942)

Planes: A20C, Spit Vc (2), P40M vs Bf109F2, Fiat Cr42, Mc202 VII, Mc202III

The desert is a very inhospitable place. Movement is really only possible at night and in the early morning and the Axis forces have been moving all through the darkness. They have tried to round the mountains and get on to the plain before the Desert Air Force can find or stop them.

Tobruk Siege (1942)

Planes: Bf109F2, Bf109 E7, Ju87 B2 vs P-40m, Hurricane IIb

Tobruk is going to fall to Rommel's panzers but only if the fuel and ammunition that has been shipped in can be sunk before it is offloaded.

Guadalcanal Diary (1942)

Planes: A3M2-21, A6M2-N, D3A1, G4M1-11 vs F4F-3, F4F-4, P-39D-1

After the defeats across the pacific in early '42 the Americans chose the island of Guadalcanal as a start point for their counterattack. The island would prove to be a bloody tomb for many men from both sides. Whilst the battles on the ground raged the Japanese disrupted American supplies by sending ships down Ironbottom Sound and bombers from Rabul, a 1000+ mile round trip.

The Manchurian Candidates (1944)

Planes: G4M1 Betty, D3A1 Val, J2m5, Ki-84-Ia, N1K2-Ja vs Yak-3, La-7, Yak-9U

The very best of late war tech is on display here. Russia advances against Japanese positions in Manchurian and you get to be involved.

Khalkhin Gol (1939)

Planes: I-153M62, I-16 Type18, TB-3 vx Ki-27 Ko, Ki-27 Otsu

In an area of the world that most people would be happy to give away the Japanese Empire and the Russian Soviet clashed repeatedly between the great wars of the 20th Century. Such events brought great hardship to an already impoverished area. One such clash is represented here. The Imperial army has established a fire base for their cannon in support of another probing offensive, if it is not destroyed then the Russian troops will be in for a difficult few days.

Huskey (1943)

Planes: FW190A4, Bf109F2, Bf109G6, Ju87D5, Ju88A4 vs P-47D10, P-38J, SpitVc

In 1943 The Allies invaded Italy. The normally quiet Luftwaffe came out to play and heavily bombed and strafed the ships landing troops, it nearly resulted in a withdrawal! Can History be changed?

Peenamundee (1944)

Planes: B25, P-51C, P-51B, Mosquito vs Fw190A8, Fw190d9 1944, Bf109G6

The Germans have been developing weapons of astonishing power and sophistication. They have development bases that must be destroyed.

Rodeo (1942)

Planes: Hurricane IIc, Spitfire Vb, A20c vs Fw190a4, Bf109F2

In 1941/1942 the RAF flew attack missions with fast light/medium bombers in daylight. Their task was twofold. Hit targets on the ground and get the LW up in the air where RAF fighters could engage them. As a rule the LW would not play the game and often didn't engage. Sometimes they did....<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Very good news indeed and about time Sparx. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I have a couple questions...not gripes but questions.

Tigers Teeth (1942) Why did the A6M3 make it in to go up against P-40Bs? Zeros never faced the AVG and the A6M21 would be a better fit. Correct?

Seelow Heights (1945) Dora is there but no P-51D? Only the B and C.

Im sure you will add more missions later but no Corsair! LOL well I guess that one is a gripe but Would be nice to see a map with the Corsair and Hellcat at least one. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

The rest looks outstanding though and Im sure will make for some great match ups. I look forward to trying it out as soon as I get my new rig put together. Hopefully this weekend.

warclouds is hellafun I would really like to see a warcloud servers that is not just spitfires vs 109k4s tas and doras. I just don't like the labels on which ruins immersion. There is no challenge of having to ID the enemy ac first before shooting like the real wwii pilots had to. Thats why the AW leagues are so popular and it seems many agree with me on HL about it.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Awesome! I might just fly dog servers a bit more ow that there might be some variety! I have been kinda sick of latewar WF since about the second week after AEP came outhttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Just one observation about the FW190 choices. The A5 would probably be a better choise as the A4 is running at early 1942 type performance, even Oleg saying the A5 would be a better indicator of A4 fighter performance.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

@ Havok, I am sure there are going to be some historical discrepancies, that is why we said the maps have historical overtones. JG27_Heven_Sent created all the current maps on the server, so he would be better to answer the whys to your questions. I will say that sometimes you have to use a little "Historical Licensing" to make maps fun and playable. So that could very well be the case in those instances. Please feel free to ask him in our forums. No map is ever really complete http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif.

As to the no Corsair... this is just what we had ready to start off. There will be more maps added as they are done. If you have some ideas you would like to see put into a map, feel free again to post them at our forums. We are always open to suggestions. Sometimes the hardest thing about making maps is getting the Idea to start from.

@DustyBarrels77 We could do the no Icon debate forever. But we have always ran Icons on our server and will continue to do so. There are plenty of other servers that run with no icons, Winds of War, Spits vs 109s, Zekes vs Wildcats, Historia, by.sturmovik.de, Pacific Confict are all great servers that cater to the No Icon crowd. So you have many choices if playing with No Icons is what you prefer. There are not as many Limited Icon Servers such as WarClouds which is one of the reasons we started the TOH server.

@everyone ....... Thanks for the comments. We hope that you will give the server a run and hope that you enjoy it. If you have any comments about the maps currently running or if you have suggestions for new maps for the server, please feel free to drop by our forums and let us know.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

this is THE best server online with the best planesets.

i agree with HAVOK on a couple points..need at least one pacific style map w corsairs if possible and such

the standard warclouds gets WAY boring real fast. same planes all day every day. i like variety myself although regular warclouds is real popular. I would love to see the regular warclouds just import all those historic maps over to it and stick with one server.I think touch of history might not take off otherwise. but i hope im wrong cuz its my fav.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Why would we do this Red? The people that fly on the WF server do so because the like the server the way it is. How does it makes sense to take offline what people are enjoying. If they preferred the TOH server, they would be there, right? You can not honestly think that taking away what these people like and then trying to force them to play on something they don't like would work to ya?

I hope the TOH takes off. I do not care much for no Icon servers. With GreaterGreen gone, there was not much in the way of a Limited Icon server that had multiple fronts and years on it. So we decided to try and put something up to fill the gap. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Now it's up to everyone that plays online to decide what they want to do.

As for maps with Corsairs, they are coming. Maps do take a little bit of time to make. Its just an area we haven't gotten to yet http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Played on TOH last night.....enjoyed it a lot.

One of the other VPG guys I work with, and I, were saying a few days ago that it would be great to have a Warclouds with more variety in the plane sets and some PTO maps.
I guess someone was listening.....eerie...

I hope it gets as popular as WF...it would be nice to alternate between the two - depending on what I feel like.

Just one thing I'd like to ask....What do you think about trying Greatergreen type icon settings?
Leaving the friendly icons as they are and having no icons at all for the enemy?
Myself, and a few people I've talked to really liked those settings - and when you record tracks for guncams and stuff, you don't get the icons popping up.
You could trial the idea on TOH and have a vote at the end of the trial for either keeping it or going back to old way.

Thanks for expanding our options and a big thanks to Heaven_Sent for the maps http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Noticed WC-TOH on the server lists last night for the first time - decided to try it.

While I only had time to fly several sorties on two of the maps in rotation - I HAD A BLAST.

I think this "Touch of History" theme is a great and creative idea, which offers a lot of potential for interesting "what if's" in a historical context. In the two maps that I flew sorties on, I was impressed by:

1) the layout of the maps - which maximized air and ground combat.

2) Objective based, sensible missions.

3) The balance and diversity of plane sets.

I spend most of my online time flying icons off these days. I'm don't think it will affect my manhood however, if I say that I also enjoy flying with limited icons too. The way that you've configured the icons, a pilot cannot observe them until close range anyway.

While my 48 year old eyes want to imagine I'm a 24 year old fighter pilot that can spot a fly on a fencepost from 10,000 feet (immersion) - the shift in my bifocals as my TrackIR pans ruins some of my immersion anyway.

Another bonus for me is that your running Server Commander - which heightens my immersion significantly. The battlefield message traffic concerning attacks and events - tie's the pilot in to the larger picture - just like radio did in WWII. The one thing I do not enjoy on some of my favorite servers, is the lack of Server Commander.

So, congratulations on the new server, SPARX and thanks for all the hard work.

Bravo Zulu!

i agree with HAVOK on a couple points..need at least one pacific style map w corsairs if possible and such

Lack of Corsair didn't get me, its the lack of Hellcat. Way more important aircraft in the Pacific theatre. But I suspect this is just a starting point and JG27Heavensent and JV44Heinzbar will make more maps if its popular<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Just one observation about the FW190 choices. The A5 would probably be a better choise as the A4 is running at early 1942 type performance, even Oleg saying the A5 would be a better indicator of A4 fighter performance.

The server is a great idea but the planesets need some tweaking to really be a touch of history IMO. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

The problem here is that with reds top fighter as the Spitfire Vb, its already overwhelmed big time by the FW190A4, so to add a FW190A5 will just be a bit bad for balance, I would tink. Everyone will join blue, and not many willing to fly as target drones.

Think about it - would YOU fly a SPitfire Vb if there was a FW190A4 on the map? Never mind a FW190A5...<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I'd pick a 109G2 over a 190A4 for that year, then the A5 become superior although admittedly they require a different style - i'm looking at performance (speed/accellaration) specifically.

Great to see maps like this, all too frequently a 43 map appears and a load of idiots say "**** planes" and "where's the LA7?". It's great fun flying the 39 AC, for example i'd like to see a server with biplanes only, perhaps P11's too - there's plently to choose from in all sides - i-153, Gladiator, CR.42 etc. It allows you into something you'd like to fly but cannot because you'd be easy meat for everyone else. I'd like to fly the 109E a lot more but most servers are at least 42, so you get the F's and G's and there's no point in taking the E.

My only question right now is why the D9 but not the A9 also? Why the A8 over the A9?<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I may as well fly a kite...
