View Full Version : OT: Finally got two things outta my system last night.

Actually the "OT" in my title line means on topic, not off. Just thought I'd throw that in there.

Well anyway I had two things I wanted to try so I went into FMB last night and made two simple missions. I had noticed when I was flying on the Japanese side a while back that there were hangers at the Tarawa airbase that were opened on both ends, small hangers but open at both ends nonetheless.

Yep, you guessed it, I wanted to try the James Bond "Octopussy" stunt by flying through the hanger!!! Well I had flown those campaign missions in the KI-43-1B so I thought I'd start my FMB attempt with that plane. But I could not do it for the life of me. Then I decided to try taxiing up to the door to see how much space there was to get though. Only about one simulated meter total, leaving only about a half meter on each side if I wanted to make it dead center!!

So then I decided to try flying a short wingspan plane, so I changed to the Brewster Buffalo. Took a while to get my approach stabilized so I didn't make it until the fourth try. Now, finally can do it nearly every time.

With the Buffalo, the hard part is not avoiding the sides of the hanger, but striking the ground with your prop. I will post his simple mission later for any brave daredevil that wants to try it. Or you can easily do it yourself in FMB. I have track of me doing it too, very fun to watch. Finally I did the James Bond thing.....I feel better now.

The second thing I wanted to try was to hit a Carrier with a Mistel JU-88 bomb load, either normal release and survive, or Kamikaze style.

I was never able to hit the thing release style, either I missed due to imperfect aim or the AA hit it and damaged it enough to throw it's flight trajectory off. It would explode in the water but never close enough to even scratch the Essex. One time though the left wing scraped accross the edge of the flight deck up by the bow starboard side but it went into the water and exploded too late.

Then I tried traditional Kamikaze attacks. This proved fruitless at first since I always would get hit by flak, even when I put a lot of other enemy planes in for them to shoot at.

Then I discovered that the bow of the CV was not very well protected with guns so I flew in at low enough level to cause spray and on the second attempt I hit dead center, head on at the bow.

The damage sent her to the bottom in about 3 minutes flat, very devastated. She went down appropriately, bow down and her stern pointed staight up, with her golden screws glistening in the simulated sunlight. It was a beautiful sight.

My favorites for doing the hangar trick are the I-16 and I-153 (one of the more fun planes for aerobatics, especially since the engine stalls under negative G's).

Since you mention a carrier, try flying an He-163 through the front superstructure under the flight deck. I've seen others do it and have done it myself as well, but it's hard. You can't do it flying level since there's not enough room that way!

Cool, but was the carrier moving full steam?? Or was it just sitting dead in the water?? It would be hard to do that with the CV still but moving would be really tough. If you can do it moving I want to see your track of it, especially if it's full steam.

Give the ship a 170 degree waypoint turn, and try it, As the Ship Turns.

My money is on the guy who flew the He-111 under a bridge, inverted. That was a pretty sight http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I can only barely pull the Brewster through the hangar straigh up, so a virtual beer for the first person who can...

1. Fly a Brewster through that hangar, inverted.
2. Fly a ki-43 through the hangar, inverted...just to show us that the Japanese have steady hands, too.
3. Fly any plane through the superstructure of a moving carrier...
4. Land on the wing of a TB-3. Ok, I don't know if that's at all possible, but it's worth a try, isn't it?

Tracks please, people...

When I'm skip bombing cargo ships with a dive bomber, I usually fly over the ship just high enough to clear the midship superstructure and pass under the cable that stretches between the forward and aft mast of the ship.

Now you got me wanting to try flying through the hanger decks of one of the US CV's. LOL

Hey, I got an idea!! How about someone try to fly a Mistel with the FW on top through the superstructure of a carrier. I mean instead of that little He-163 anyway. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif

This is fun, the biplane fits easily but it is a little tougher since you have to roll side ways at the last minute.

A hard thing to do is in the FMB, put like 10 of those double open sided hangers in a row making one long tunnel, and try flying through that!!

Which ship or carrier is that?? I may this this.

Ladies and gentleman, please don't try these stunts at home, they are for professional stunt pilots only.

It would be cool if you could post tracks of these stunts. If you would like your track published just email it to submissions@airwarfare.com

S! Are all these stunts done at 1/4 speed?

No they arent.

It is at 1/4th speed because I recorded it and then played it back, and slowed it down so I could get a screen shot. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

TRACKS IN NTRK FORMAT ONLY

Well, I'd post mine going through the hanger but it's not a big enough deal.
I think most of the simmers around here could do it with a few minutes practice. But some of the others sound more impressive than mine, so maybe
they should post theirs.

I've only been able to do it properly with the carrier stationary. After 20+ times trying it at 30 kts, the best I did was make it through with a clipped wingtip that caused me to crash shortly thereafter.

Me too. But it took sitting there and reading the whole sports page.

It might be cool if everyone sent in their traks both the successful and un-
and someone could turn 'em into a movie..
...with music

Hmmm. Veddy interesting idea... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Any suggestions for the music?
1812 Overture might work. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif

http://www.geocities.com/335th/pirate2.gif

Mine aren't. What challenge would it be for me to fly through a hanger at only 1/4 speed??
Of course I could do that. I think any modestly talented sim pilot should be able to do what I did and it's not a big deal. If there are people who can't even fly through hanger, then maybe they should take up something else they are good at and forget flight sims??

If you have not enough precision to fly through a space like that, then how can you manuever well enough to fight???

and if one takes it easy..... one can drag wingtips and tail(upside down) through the water on rivers, but be carefull, when the water bites..... it takes a big chunk...

wingtip trick is working, and not only on water!

I think the 1/4 speed thing is a valid arguement. I understand it is the best way to get a screenie, thats not the problem.

The problem is people will turn off HUD and fly it in 1/4 speed so that it does not show on the ntrk.

I know, I know, Its just a friendly game we are playing and trying to have some fun. But, Some people will do anything to get thier 5 mins in the spotlight!

So, All ntrk's should show some sort of HUD message. This way all will know that no game speed adjustments were made.

Some of these are very much fun to try. Lets have some fun.
