The TSR2 was the most advanced military aircraft of the 1960's. Designed for penetration of enemy airspace either at high or low altitudes with up to four free fall nuclear weapons or a range of conventional ordinance. The TSR2 pioneered the use of titanium in aircraft construction, had some of the most advanced avionics including sidwards facing terrain tracking radar and auto pilot system that enabled flight in all weather even at zero altitude. The TSR2 had the capability to travel at Mach 2.2 for 45 minutes and had exceptional stability at low heights thanks to its small high loaded wing.

Unfortunately the project was cancelled due to costs, political wrangling, pressure from the USA and the F-111 consortium which leaked statements that the F-111 would have superior performance and come much cheaper ( bollocks ) and infighting between the Royal Navy and the RAF and some crazy bias from Mountbatten who refused to be shaken from his view that the Bucaneer was the best thing since cucumber sandwiches.

In the early 1980's, while the Tornado was in development, Margaret Thatchers government did a feasibilty study to decide whether or not it would be a good Idea to resurrect the TSR2 20 YEARS after its cancellation. Unfortunately thanks to the destruction of all the tools and designs of the origional aircraft it was not worthwhile. Had the TSR2 been placed in production it would have fullfilled Britain and any other sane Nato country's strike needs in to the 21st century and would still out perform strike aircraft today for a typical military operation in Iraq or the Middle East.

International monetary fund anyone ? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif
