Hello to every "kapitan" on this board. I´m new here, i´ve been lurking and reading the threads for a while, but now i decided to register, and get a few questions answered if possible. I love SH3, even though the bugs do tend to make me wanna rip the hair off my head sometimes. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif
Anyway, here´s a few questions for those who know SH3 inside out:

1: The snorkle. It´s november 1943, i´m in a IX-D2, and the snorkle appears in the equipment roster, but when i try to click and add it to my boat, nothing happens. Even more, the renown cost of it keeps changing to the value of the item i saw last. If i look at a radar that costs 250, and then go to the snorkle, it will show it as costing 250. If i see the subs then go to the snorkle, it will cost 9000. It´s a bug, right? Why can´t i add it to my boat? I have +13.000 renown, so money isn´t the issue. Could it be that this sub doesn´t suport snorkle? And if so, why is it in the equipment roster?

2: What do i gain by completing the missions assigned by Command? They keep ordering me to patrol some obscure grid the other side of the atlantic, even though i never find anything when i get there. Is it worth the trouble?

3: I installed patch 1.4, to try it out, and i got this annoying bug when starting missions, my sonar kept being destroyed upon start. So i uninstalled the whole game, keeping only my save games, and installed i back, this time without any patches. But to my surprise, that bug followed me back. I never had that happen in 1.0, but now i do. And in 1.0, i don´t get the ping button in sonar room, while in 1.4 i do, allthough i heard they had removed the sonar for that particular Uboat. So why is the pinging working, while i can see "sonar destroyed" in the compartment status?

4:Is there a way to gain acess to the XXI in late 1943? I´m sick of the IX-D2, the extra torps (and the vanishing external torpedoes bug) are not enough to make me want to keep this floating piece of scrap. It´s so damn slow that it´s painfull to watch... I want the XXI, or at least go back to VII-C.

5:Why are all the career missions just "patrol grid #"? Aren´t there any missions like sinking a battlship, or raiding Scapa Flow? The missions are lame, always the same thing...

6: What´s the deal with whole squadrons of Catalinas and Sundherlands attacking me? These were search planes, not a squadron of fighters, for pete´s sake. I can agree to 2 coming at me, but whole squadrons, in waves of them, one after the other? Talk about unrealistic.

7:Where are all the battle ships? I´m on my 18th mission, and i haven´t seen anything bigger than a destroyer yet... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/cry.gif

8:How do i select a target underwater, using sonar or hydrophone? I can´t select anything unless i raise scope and do it manually. My sonar guy seems to be both blind and deaf...

9: Where can i download all the mods that you guys talk about here? I want the snorkle mod, in the event i can´t get the snorkle thorough normal channels. And i want more battleships.

Sorry for all the questions, it´s just that i´ve spent many weeks wondering about stuff like this, but never got around to ask.
Glad to be here.Cheers, and good hunting to all.

Oh, and one last question:

If i sit around the english channel during D-Day, will i see a vast fleet of ships in the area, as per the historical lines? Are these events recriated? I would love a chance to reek havok amongst the invasion fleet, and render the invasion impossible... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

1. You wouldn`t happend to have a deck gun, are you?

2. You get renown points for reaching a patrol grid and patroling it for 24 hours and also for comming back to base.

5. Nope, but you can play single missions if you find real U-boot warfare boring.

7. Most of WW ll captains shared the same faith with you.

8. This is again a WWll simulation and not Ohio class boomer.

9. Here

1) The snorkel should be there even if you cant say anything changing in the equip scene.

2)You gain renown for that

3)I dont know that problem http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

4)Nope http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

5)Thats because of the fully dynamic campaign the community asked the devs for.

6) Not unrealistic when a carrier group is something near you. Sinking u-boats was the goal whatever it takes to reach that. If a whole squadron was avaible for that task......why keep them on the flight deck ? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

7) The battle ships are travelling in task forces. You dont come across them too often

8) I guess there is now way to "select" the target but there is a way of attacking a ship by using only sonar. I think the community member paulhager can help you with this.

9) Use this link (http://u-boot.realsimulation.com/) http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

IIRC, neither the Catalina nor the Sunderland were ever used as carrier-borne planes, and since they were basically long-range search planes I don't think they would ever really have been used in squadron strength flying in close formation/proximity as opposed to being spread out over a much larger area so they could cover more ocean. Therefore, I do think the behavior I've seen reported around here of being attacked by wave after wave of these particular planes doesn't really make any sense from a realism perspective.

Of course, since I crash dive at the instant any plane is sighted I've never actually witnessed this behavior myself. If we could really see the planes far enough off to be able to track them and make a judgment about whether they had spotted us or not, I might stick around on the surface a bit to see if I could avoid them, but there's just no percentage in fighting it out on the surface with a plane that's seen you unless you're stuck up there for some reason 'cause you're damaged or something. I have sworn that I would fight it out with any plane that comes along while I'm bringing the external torps below, to simulate not being able to dive as quickly as under normal circumstances, but so far this hasn't happened to me yet.

Good luck and good hunting!

LOL celeon, Id love to see you try and land a sunderland on a carrier http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Ive seen one in Hendon RAF museum, those are big mothers, not to mention they didnt have wheels fitted as standard!

@panther -A Uboat is much bigger than any plane of that era, I think if you can see a plane from your boat, its safe to assume the plane can see you. They are after all -looking for Uboats.

So, did i get this right? We can only mount the snorkle if we take out the deck gun? Why is that necessary, since the snorkle is mounted next to the periscope? Taking out a flak turret i can understand, but the deck gun?? Doesn´t make sense...
As for the Catalinas, i´ve watched them appearing 3 or 4 at a time. I can see them being in the middle of the atlantic, since they can "land" on the water and refuel next to some allied milkcow, but them coming in squadrons is just wrong. Usually each PBY was assigned a search grid, there is no way there would be more than 2 at a time in a given grid coordenate.

@Messervy
I don´t find "real Uboat warfare" lame, what i find lame is that command fails to utilize the potential of the sub fleet, by just sending us to patrol some far empty piece of ocean. Surelly the german war machine knew the movements of the allied battle fleets, it is just common sense that they would commit at least part of the sub fleet to hunt high profile targets, as it DID infact occur in real life.

On nº8, even a WWII sub had the ability to track a certain target underwater. What i was asking was how do i follow a given contact, in the midst of dozens of others. The hydrophone lines drawned in the map already state it can be done. The question is, how do i order my WO to plot a solution, if i don´t have a target selected?

It´s too bad that D-Day and the Sicilly invasion were not recreated. It would have been fun to hunt the troop transports before they hit the beaches. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Thanks for all the quick replies.

Ithink you'll find that most Uboats did just patrol certain grids, and that any meeting they had with captial ships were by chance (more often that not) Uboats were not ideal for hunting battle ships and what have you as they couldnt travel anywhere near fast enough to follow - let alone catch up to one. The game reflects this, most Big task forces move at 21 knots, they are very rare, if you want to sink one in port, sneak in to Scapa flow or Loch Ewe, do this around late 39 (october onwards) for best results.

As for D-day, the few Uboats that did make it anywhere near the invasion force were sunk before they could fire off a shot, the English channel is not a nice place for submarines. Again - the game reflects this.

You can take aim at ships with the hydrophones, but its tricky and can only be done manually, Your WO will not make a solution for you.

Celeon could land one on an aircraft carrier !

They just need to get that tower they call "the isle" out of my way ! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-mad.gif

Celeon needs space for his landings! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

The purpose of the U-boats was to starve England into surrender. They wanted to sink merchant vessels. Sinking a BB or Carrier may have had some short term positive impact on the German War effort but sinking two or three large tankers in a convoy could keep lots of ships at anchor because of lack of fuel(at least in theory).
When my Dad was sent to England in WW2 they went over unescorted on the Queen Elizabeth. The Queen Mary (and probably others) also traveled alone at over 20 knots basically just counting on outrunning any U-boats that might have been out there.

Ok, my snorkle isn´t working, don´t know why not. Someone answered here that i had a deck gun, and that it was because of that that i couldn´t get the snorkle. If that is true, how do i remove the deck gun?? There isn´t any option to remove it.
In the equipment room, i usually double click on the item i want installed, but when i click on the snorkle nothing happens. And the cost bug is still there, so i assume something is wrong. I did a fresh install of the game, but some of the bugs i spotted while using patch 1.4 are still there, wich begs the question:
Are some informations regarding game settings saves on the player´s save folder? Because that´s the only thing i kept from before, while trying the 1.4 patch. Did the patch write something on my save files, that now reflects on the game? If so, how do i set it all back to 1.0?
The snorkle is really needed right about now, i can´t envision raiding Scapa Flow in 1944 without one, and it´s killing my game... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif
Anyone? Pleeeaaaaase???

I have a schnorkel on my Type IX-B with deck gun. The schnorkel is mounted on the starboard side of the deck, just in front of the conning tower (so no need to get rid of the deck gun). I doubt this is different on an IX-D2, so no idea what you problem is. Could be a bug with the IX-D2 (the XXI has some bugs)

I just solved the snorkle problem. Seems that the IX-D2 doesn´t support it. I changed to the IX-C40 and i got it from the start. Seems odd that the best and latest IX boat doesn´t get a snorkle, and all the previous ones do... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Anyway, started a new mission, and 2 minutes after i left Lorient (i was still deep within the bay) i got attacked by 12 Liberator bombers, and they are still coming. It´s as if they were waiting for me to leave the dock. This is odd to say the least, since they came from deep within France. Where the hell are the german fighters and the flak?? And i can´t even dive, since the bay is very shallow... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/compsmash.gif
Oh well, let me see if i can dodge a bomber rush again. Can´t help to think this reminds me of a zerg rush attack...

I've had a simlar problem before. It was fixed when I applied the 1.4 patch.

The IX-D2 still has a Weapons Management screen bug it though.
