Ok, first off let my just say that I love IL-2!!! This is the most incredible game I think I've ever played.

Second, for the disclaimer, I am still playing the ORIGINAL IL-2 Sturmovik v1.2 (from 2001) and the issues presented have most likely been fixed already so this is mostly just getting things of my chest http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/1072.gif

Anyway, here's my problem. Tanks with large guns (anything that can take the wing/tail off of an IL-23M in one hit) are far, far, far too accurate. It's driving me crazy!!!!

I've been playing a P-39 campaign, and survived 25 missions so far, however I got to wanting a little change of pace, so I decided to start the Crimea43 IL-2 3M campaign for a little ground pounding fun.

I previously finished the Russian Bomber campaign, so I'm pretty experienced in the Sturmovik, but even still I died far too many times to tank fire http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

I finished the first mission fine, and started on the second mission. First try, everything was fine. Kept speed above 320 and kept going in curves. Got dewinged in one shot by a tank that I was diving on at about 360KPH.

Second try, everything's going ok. Missed with most of my ordinance http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif Come around for a pass behind my wingman. Line up on a ground of three StuGs and prepare to let rip. BANG, dewinged by a Panzer IIIG behind me. I was going 350KPH. To add insult to injury, about a second after my right wing was taken off (I'm now falling and in a slight spin at 350KPH) another tank in the same group of Panzers takes of my LEFT WING!!!!!!

Now I remember why I quit ground pounding!!!!

Just my little rant for the month,
Chris

That takes me back! Good ole' Il2 Sturmovik and the "sniper tanks". I feel your pain in retrospect and yes, it was fixed in later versions... about 3 years ago I think.

Tanks for the memory!

This in 4.02 or in the old original IL-2. Was an issue back in the day...

I haven't been hit by a tank in months.

Yes, tanks were (and are) far too accurate (though less so in later versions) but their gun elevation is limited. Stay above their line of fire and they can't hit you.

How high is there line of fire? I've been succesfully dewinged at 500m Above Ground Level, and at least a kilometer away!!!

Again...what game are we talking about? PF 4.02?

Tanks have varrying levels of elevation. I think the T-34 and the Sherman have fairly decent ranges of motion on their cannons while the Panzers, in my experience, seem to have less.

Despite hours of ground pounding in all types of aircraft including IL-2s...I have not once been hit by a tank in months if not in over a year. On occasion they do manage a lucky shot but it hasn't happened in a while.

If you're really down on luck...approach from above and behind like you're supposed to. Hit the weakest point in their armor with a rocket and they won't have a chance to shoot you.

As I said in my first post, IL-2 v1.2

I'm waiting for the Platinum DVD (Or Air Combat Collection) to get into PF 4.02m.

Thanks for your tips, I'll try them out.

Yeah, thats no problem now. ive NEVER been shot down by a standard battle tank or assault gun, and its kinda dumb to have them firing their main gun at planes anyway....im confident that no kills were made that way. Tehy should fire their external MGs if htey have them. Only AA vehicles should be fairly effective (theyre abit too effective, but i basically either aviod them or tell my wingies to go after flak).
When you get the new setup, you will be amazed i think. Still some stuff needing fixing, but no more sniper tanks. They still do have android sniper bomber gunners, which is why its manatory to change most of the bomber skill levels to rookie if you want any chance of surving more than one pass.

AI still flies into the ground too much, but it helps if you tell them to return to base as youre approaching the field. Your wingmen will actually cover you now when you ask, as ive shown on here before.

Alot of the problems like you describe could be adressed if there was an adjustable skill level for anything that shoots. the anti tank guns are still too effective and shoot too fast at ground targets.

Id attack from a higher angle and altitude, since they did that anyway i think, at least at the begginign of their runs.

Yeah, always do at least a 45 degree dive on the first pass, it's the passes after that where it gets a little tricky.

To get back up to alt either takes to long, or leaves to slow enough to be an easy shot http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Oh well, only two weeks http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif till the Platinum DVD's out

Ace_Highflyer, something to be aware of... when you get a message indicating you were killed by a tank's main gun, you have to remember that all mobile armoured vehicles are considered "tanks" by the game, including Wirbelwinds, half tracks and so forth. Nevertheless, in the original IL2 the tanks were quite a lot too accurate at improbably long ranges.

Saw it for sale today at Hardly Normals for AU$9.95.
Nearly bought it for old times sake.
They also had SH111 and Flanker for the same price.

actually, some (light) tanks were designed with shooting at aircraft and upper floors of buildings in mind - the T-40/T-60 have 12.5mm/20mm auto guns and can elevate them quite high (60 degrees).

Thanks for all your replies, fellers.

However, I'm only talking about heavy tanks with guns larger than about 40mm. Any less than that and they can't take of your wing in one hit. (Well, unless you and your sturmo get really, really, unlucky)

Well thats the problem right there....original IL-2 had this. I was being sniped by tanks and submarines pretty readily.

Never happened in FB 1.0 and onwards. Certaintly not in PF...I was once hit by a tank maybe a year ago but I was right in the tanks face moving slowly and he got a lucky shot.

Mien Gott!!! somebody actually did!!??

I saw that once in a comic book (about 36 yrs ago-when they were alot less PC), but never believed it.

Still, i dont think that too many tanker gunners wasted ammo on planes......not main gun ammo anyway. Sorta silly for them to shoot at planes in the sim on a regular basis. Now the co-ax.........

I think I remember reading somewhere that some soviet tank units had standing orders to use any and all available armament (including main guns) on jabo (ground attack) aircraft for a period during the Great Patriotic War.

A British Centurion tank in Korea shot down a Mig 15 with it's main gun...flukey but true! Imagine trying to explain that one to your squadron leader! I doubt the guy survived though, that had one BIG gun on it, I think about 90mm at the time.
