I am stumped on one of the campaigns in IL-2. I cant remember which battle it is (my bad) but I think its the 39th battle on the russian fighter side.

The briefing states that I need to fly (LA fighter) with bombs, attack some ground units, fight off german fighters while the ground attack planes finish off the germans on the ground and then protect the dive bombers on the way back home.

My problem is that I attack the ground units and then take on the 4-5 ME109s but before I can wipe out the 109s amd order the AIs to return with me, the dive bombers get bounced and I cant make it back in time to protect them and I end up losing the battle.

Which means I need to refly the mission.......for the tenth time.

What am I doing wrong?

Is there a website that kinda gives you an idea of what to do during the missions?

Thanks in advance.

take out first the enemy fighters and then attack ground targets with ur remaining ammo, you always should protect friendly aircraft at first hand and then attack ground targets if possible.

ore just order ur squad/flight group to attack ground forces while u and ur wingman take out those enemy planes.

It can be useful in campaigns to enable "Instant Success" in the difficulty to prevent things like that. Missions failed many times in the war, and there was no way to retry.

Thanks for the input.

Guess Ill change the loadout and fly a 'clean' plane so I can have the upperhand.

Hopefully I wont spend too much time trying to get through this one mission.

On a side note, since the storyline is now saying that the germans are now in retreat, shouldnt the axis fighter and bomber force start to slacken in numbers? I am using my limited knowledge of what happened on the Eastern Front in WWII.

yes but this is still a game so the historical plane numbers arnt included, beside all that isnt it a bit boring fighting only a few enemys while you got several flights/squads up in the air ?

BTW r you playing IL2FB ore the original il2 sturmovik ?

Im flying the original game, I havent purchased the FB yet.

Oh, just to let anyone (who cares), I beat the mission and now have moved on to mission #39. However, I am now stuck with the P-39 aircorba aka 'flying brick' IMHO.

Also has the BoB game come out yet?

Just finished that mission a couple of weeks ago, and had similar problems. The key to the mission is bomber escort-you drop your bomb on the tanks (or their general vicinity), engage the 109s long enough for the Pe-3s to clear the area, and then follow them out. It may be necessary to leave a couple of 109s behind, but the key to success is to keep most of the bombers alive, so you stay close to them and keep the 109s and the 190s that show up later busy until they can land. The "Mission Completed" sign comes up at that point, or the "Failed" message, if you let too many of them die. Then you can either take out the fighters or disengage and land. I got the "Failed" message, but eventually my flight and I wiped out the e/a, and after we landed, I was able to apply the mission.

Cheers,
