Is it me or is it realy slow up at 8000m ?

was chasing 109s at 8, 9, 10000 max air speed 300kmh I thought this bird was a high altitude speed deamon ?

I think that you are looking at the indicated airspeed and not the actual one. The air is thinner up there and makes indicated airspeed register as low, however your actual groundspeed is fast.

Not 100% sure so feel free to correct me and flame away http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Owlsphone is correct. Indicated airspeed (IAS - what shows up on the speed bar and on your airspeed indicator, obviously) is the speed registered by the pitot/static system on the aircraft. As altitude increases, the atmospheric pressure decreases, thus producing less ram air pressure into the pitot.

True airspeed (TAS) can be roughly calculated by adding 2% of the IAS for every thousand feet of altitude.

Keep in mind that your stall speed, however, is always based on IAS...meaning you can stall at much higher true airspeeds at high altitude.

Mr. Locust knows this guys. He just feels that the P-51 is little too slow up there.

If you'r going any higher than 8km, then take the P-51B. It's super charger is more suted for high altitude. Even better, take the P-47D.

well the K4 is and was about 10kph faster than the P51D at 7k AFAIK.

so it is possible that the 109s are a tad faster up there.
but the P51 has the better all around manouverability to encounter this.
