Hello. I just picked up IL2 46 and a new Saitek stick and so far I really like the game. I am not a hardcore sim guy by any means and have spent most of my time lately on Silent Hunter 3. I decided to try a flight sim and I am gald I did. I have a few questions though. (No manual in box or on the CD)

1. I noticed that my plane bounces of the ground. Although I am not a realism nut I find this annoying. What option enables real crashes?

2. How do you take of in a jet? I try to start the engine that same as a prop but to no avail.

3. Is there a list of what each of the realism settings controls? I do not know what a few of them do.

4. What are your favorite campaigns? Do you prefer the static or the dynamic oneS?

Thanks for your time guys http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Check your difficulty settings, see what optons are on and off. Set it to medium or full, depends on your preferences.

2. How do you take of in a jet? I try to start the engine that same as a prop but to no avail.

I bet it was twin engine jet http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif You need to assign keys to engine selection, for example select left engines, select right engines, then select all. You select engine and start it, then select another side engine and start it, then hit select all.

3. Is there a list of what each of the realism settings controls? I do not know what a few of them do.

Just type those that you dont know here, we will explain. Not sure if list exists.

4. What are your favorite campaigns? Do you prefer the static or the dynamic oneS?

I would dig around in the Missions builders forum for that info, but i am sure many folks here will help you out as well. I dont fly offline, so cant help, sorry http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Thanks for the reply. Quick question on difficulty. When I select Easy, Medium or Realistic does that just adjust the settings? Or does it have an effect on the gameplay and AI as well?

Regarding the options I am not sure what flutter, head shakes are. I am thinking the crash thing I mentioned before is the realistic landing option?

Thanks again.

The difference between medium and ralistic is pretty much visual info. Views, speedbar, location on the map, icons...things like that. As far as behavior in the air... they are similar with realistic.

Easy setting differs in many areas from medium and realistic, i would not recommend to fly it, you will be missing out IMO.

Yes difficulty settings affect gameplay 100% in the sense controlling plane, seeing targets, orientating in the air, etc. As far as AI goes, it responds to skill selection rookie/veteran/ace.

Head shake immitates movement of your head during flight, not movement really, shaking of your head more or less, due to turbulance, forces, etc. So it`s not nice and steady view.

Flutter means turbulance if i am not mistaken.

Yes, that bouncing of the ground is just that in combination of other setting, i forget which one. This only happens on EASY.

also, when you eventually go online, and you will http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif, don't ever kill your team mates and don't ever try to shoot over a team mate's shoulder to get that bandit.

I've noticed a lot of people complaining about that lately...

The plane bounces on landing if you have "realistic landing" turned off.

Also make sure you have "invulnerability" turned off.

Thanks again for the answers! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I am still a bit confused on the settings. When I set my difficulty all it does it select or deselect different settings. What I am wondering is if I select realistic and then set all the switches to off (0% realism) will I get a different game then if I clicked on easy. It seems to me all that the difficulty settings do is change the settings to the level you picked. Likewise if I picked the Easy setting and then turned everything on manually to get the 100% realism would it still be the same game as if I just clicked on Realistic.

Thanks again for your patience. Sorry I am a noob http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

If you click predifined EASY/MEDIUM/REALISTIC after you customized something, it will overwrite it. If you, for example, set it to realistic, then went in and turned off few switches... just click BACK button to preserve the settings, dont click EASY/MEDIUM/REALISTIC again.

Yes, if you turn everything on, even starting from easy, it will get you to realistic and wise versa. You can get to any desired level of difficulty manually flipping switches.

Not sure why I found that so funny. Probably something to do with it being such a pithy combination of truth, sarcasm and playful exploitation of the innocent. You're a bad, bad man. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

The fact is, 'dude', you've just stepped into a zoo. Don't make any sudden moves. The animals roam freely here. Best to just get in and out as quickly as possible, observing and taking what you need in silence...damn, couldn't keep my own mouth shut. Outta here.

One more question...i hope

How do the Dynamic campagins work? I started one and it seems alot more immersive than the static ones because it tracks your squadron and stuff. Are the all missions randomly generated? Do they ever end? Can you get promoted in the Dynamic campagins?

Thanks

1 - That's realistic takeoffs/landings. Turn it on.

2 - Depends on the engines it has. If it's a multi engine jet, you need to bind keys to select engines 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. and select all engines.

3 - There should be a PDF manual on the disc that describes the difficulty settings in detail.

4 - Both. Static campaigns can add more immersion, but dynamic campaigns offer more for gaining experience. I use dynamic campaigns for training.

Difficulty settings - easy, medium, hard - affect all difficulty settings. Generally you want the first page to be all on, but the second page consists mostly of views, icons, etc.

Dynamic campaigns - Yes, they're all randomly generated, based upon campaign conditions (planes, etc.) You can get promoted based upon how successful you are - e.g., downing 10 planes in a mission will put you on the fast track to promotion. A typical campaign lasts for 30 missions, or one month.

Campaign system works as a list; when you select a starting campaign, then you proceed to the next until the war is over. Select the planes you want to fly for each campaign, then select a campaign to start with.

good stuff Korolov. Much appreciated. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Any suggestions for a good dynamic campaign? I started the US Army fighter one this morning. Seems fun so far. Also doing the german fighter static campagin. Damn i love these war sims http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

If you want a ETO/MTO style matchup using your favorite planes, you can hack the plane list for russian campaigns to enable certain types in campaign selection - e.g., a P-38J in Kuban, or a P-47D-27 in Berlin. To do this, go to your IL2\DGen folder, and locate the .dat files starting with "planes". These contain a list of campaigns and planes available. Note that some planes don't work with the generator - Tempest is one example. Your planes will be in Russian markings but you'll be able to fly your favorites in the campaign of your choice.

An alternative is Lowengrin's Dynamic Combat Generator, or DCG, which can replace DGen. It's easier to customize campaigns for DCG than it is for DGen, but lacks some elements (for me) that keeps me from replacing DGen entirely.

There's also some parameters available to customize certain campaign criteria - for example, distance to mission objectives, length of the campaign, and vice versa. Somewhere on these boards there's a list of all the parameters and what they do.

I'm sure he doesn't need a lawyer... but still here it is my opinion http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

You're right.

But still... there is another group of people... who wont jump all over you if you can't center your gunsite, or raise your landing gears.

Just want to said that... as this as it is, teh zoo is still one of the most helpful forums all around.
People go to great lengths to help other fellow forumites here.

So... I guess in the end... there is some cosmic balance here. All things considered.

And eventually with time, when members grow thick skin, and ignore the bad ones here... well forum becomes enjoyable for the most part!

I don't feel like reading all posts above (I saw some of them) so excuse me if I repeat some stuff from above:

Originally posted by gord96:
1. I noticed that my plane bounces of the ground. Although I am not a realism nut I find this annoying. What option enables real crashes? Vulnerability: ON
Realistic Landings: ON

2. How do you take of in a jet? I try to start the engine that same as a prop but to no avail. Map teh keys for

Select Engine #1
Select Engine #2
Select All Engines

Because those commands aren't mapped by default.
Find them in Controls and map 'em.

3. Is there a list of what each of the realism settings controls? I do not know what a few of them do. Cannot help you there, you must specifically name some of them. I guess those have to do something with physics in game (like torque etc.)

4. What are your favorite campaigns? Do you prefer the static or the dynamic oneS? Both. Static campaigns are great since the story is much better than dynamic ones. But you can play dynamic many times and every time it will be different (same campaign).
I flew almost every dynamic campaign available http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif or at least started them at one point.

Thanks for your time guys http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif No prob. Just ask.

Yeah, was just joking around, should have used more smileys. Thanks for the cosmic balancing. Gotta be careful growing that thick skin though, I find it hard to keep it from collecting around my head, but that's just me.

You will find a lot of campaigns at Mission4Today. Use the link below to get to my stuff and then go up to all campaigns for a ton of stuff.

Visit this thread for a list of user-made campaigns:

Gord96,

Just to add a little bit, check out this thread:

A Nugget's Guide to getting off the ground (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/23110283/m/9121094645)

It starts out with a brief history of the different game versions. No need to worry about that since IL-2 1946 is everything all rolled into one. The rest of the post has some titbits that may help you with regards to flying in IL-2.

Dynamic campaigns are great, though sometimes you might get a mission where there isn't much to do other then take-off, fly around, then land. I also recommend Lowengrin's DCG. It's a great program, quite customizable, and it allowed me to fly planes in a dynamic campaign that don't normally show up in Dgen that comes with the game.

Static campaigns are great as well, and there are a ton of them. Head over to mission4today (http://www.mission4today.com) and take a look at what's currently available. Some of the mission builders out there get very creative, and I continue to be blown away (literally) by them.

I recommend that you set up the difficulty settings like this until you get up to speed:

Select "realistic"

On the second page, turn off the following (i.e., the light goes off):

No Icons
No Speed Bar
No Map Icons
No mini map Path
No instant Success
No padlock

That way, all of the stuff regarding aerodynamics are still on, but you get better situational awareness in the mean time. Some of the planes are tough to fly, most have their own little quirks, but it really helps to learn all the stuff in the beginning.

Once you get more comfortable, turn some of that stuff back on.

Hope that helps.

Thanks so much guys. Your help is greatly appreciated. One more question. HEHE. How do I install the new campaigns? Straight From the Farm sounds like something I need right now. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Can hardly wait to get home and try the PE-2. Sounds like a fun little bomber.

Pretty easy to install new campaigns. Most of them have a readme with the proper path. Unzip files, and take the folder that has the missions and copy it into your IL-2 directory like so:

IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\missions\campaigns\(the proper country-airforce folder)\

So, for "Straight from the Farm" since it's an SBD-3 campaign, you would install it like so:

IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\missions\campaigns\UN\Stright_from_the_farm

Here are some of the different folders in the campaign directory:

DE: Germany
GB: Britain
UN: US Navy
UM: US Marines
US: USAAF
RU: Russia
IA: Japanese Army
IN: Japanese Navy

I can't remember the rest off the top of my head.

Take a look at the different folders, and you will see some of the static campaigns that came with the game in each. You will know the folder is a campaign folder when it has a few TGA files for medals.

The single mission folder structure is very similar, with the same country/airforce folder names, the only difference is that single missions are copied into folders that usually corospond with the plane you will fly (for instance - Missions\single\DE\BF-109E4).

I've been playing this series since January, and I've barely scratched the surface of cool missions and campaigns. I've got around 30 static campaigns that I have yet to try, along with the 8 or so that I've finished, plus I have hardly touched the ones that came with the game. It's doubtful you will get bored with this game anytime soon.
