Lately ive been on an American warbird kick. Ive flown them all extensivly lately but the P-38 I could never get to work in my favor...that is until today!

Now she seems to fit that sweet spot of my ideal fighter. Im knocking zekes and 109's out like it was nobodys business and if I get into a spot of trouble I just point the nose down and away she goes! Fantastic Bird, I can see why she was so well liked.

Proves what I always say; if you can't find something to like about an airplane, then you haven't flown it enough.

I love the P-38, I'm flying it right now....well, not right now.

My little secret..
I attack from any vantage.. If I nail em good I stay in the attack ..else... I run like chickensh1t...

At some point they'll turn, and then I return for the attack. If they don't I just carry on running.

The only thing I dont like about it is its hard to aim and I cant attack from the side with it, its to heavy. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

well, some japanese planes can out dive the P38 so that tactic may not always work in the PTO, but i still like flying it also.

I think you are wrong mate.
You can be outdived in P-38 initially because lighten plane reacts better at power inputs, but I think 38 will outdive every Japanese plane in the long run (shallow dive + full power).

Name me one. A P-38L Late will put away from anything in the Japanese arsenal. I have extensive experience in this area http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

It can even have a reasonable go at pulling away from any Japanese fighter in a dive with the HVAR Christmas trees attached.

You will recieve quick challenges to this claim, and rightly so: name one...

Its a stable gun platform that doesn't need rudder to counteract engine torque ... in what way do you find it hard to aim ?

I find it hard to aim at the side of my enemies aircraft, the bullets dont spread out enough.

Interesting, most people prefer nose mounted guns in game because it gives a better concentration of fire.

Historically I know the USN used point harmonization up to about '43 at which stage it switched to pattern boresighting.

No idea what the USAAF or the ingame p38's use though I do recall a lot of arguments about 0.50 cal harmonisation a few years back and I believe Oleg changed some US aircraft away from the point convergence to a box of some sort.

Yep, I like the wing mounted guns.

Until your aiming improves.

I love the sniping ability of the 38. I can shoot much earlier with nose guns than wing guns, which makes attacking bombers safer, along with head-on attacks.

It does seem to me like nose-mounted guns are trickier, they cover a much smaller area mainly I guess. Wing-mounted guns seem more like you're throwing a wall at the enemy.

Oleg chanaged from A bigger hit box (box convergence) to an extremely tight "point convergence" because people had a hard time bringing planes down when the spread was so big. Now its even more difficult and now people complain that its too difficult to even hit target. Rightly so... anyway, wont be changed unless some nice MODS lets u set bore convergence... Hoping hoping hoping!!

First thing mods should do about guns is to make a historical belting.
That means more fire for .50cal, and in general http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif .
But then again, that opens a whole new can of worms (messing with gun models).

the jack can dive with the P38 easily, granted zeros have no chance but even the KI84 can keep pace, depending at what alt. the dives start.

power dives are nice dont get me wrong, it just depends what your flying against.
